SCADI: A standard dataset for self-care problems classification of children with physical and motor disability.

Self-care problems diagnosis and classification is an important challenge in exceptional children health care systems. Since, self-care problems classification is a time-consuming process and requires expert occupational therapists, using an expert system in classifying these problems can decrease cost and time, efficiently. Expert systems refer to the systems that are based on artificial intelligence methods, which have the ability to learn, infer, and predict. In order to configure and train an expert system, a standard dataset is critical for the learning phase. Hence, in this research, a n

A Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis to Synthesize the Influence of Contexts of Scaffolding Use on Cognitive Outcomes in STEM Education.

Computer-based scaffolding provides temporary support that enables students to participate in and become more proficient at complex skills like problem solving, argumentation, and evaluation. While meta-analyses have addressed between-subject differences on cognitive outcomes resulting from scaffolding, none has addressed within-subject gains. This leaves much quantitative scaffolding literature not covered by existing meta-analyses. To address this gap, this study used Bayesian network meta-analysis to synthesize within-subjects (pre-post) differences resulting from scaffolding in 56 studies.

Life skills, mathematical reasoning and critical thinking: a curriculum for the prevention of problem gambling.

Previous studies have shown that youth are two to three times more likely than adults to report gambling related problems. This paper reports on the development and pilot evaluation of a school-based problem gambling prevention curriculum. The prevention program focused on problem gambling awareness and self-monitoring skills, coping skills, and knowledge of the nature of random events. The results of a controlled experiment evaluating the students learning from the program are reported. We found significant improvement in the students' knowledge of random events, knowledge of problem gambling

Interprofessional geriatric education in a post-pandemic world: Comparing outcomes of in-person versus virtual simulations.

Interprofessional education (IPE) enhanced with simulation for pre-licensure health care students can be used to teach a collaborative interprofessional team approach to promote positive health outcomes in the older adult population. Little is known about outcome differences between in-person and virtual IPE. A multi-step, simulation-enhanced IPE was developed based on Wagner's Chronic Care and Constructivism Active Learning theoretical frameworks and implemented in-person and virtually for cohort comparison. Learning outcomes were the advancement of interprofessional collaborative competencie

Strategies for case-based training with virtual patients: An experimental study of the impact of integrating mental model articulation and self-reflection.

Resilient system performance in high-stakes settings, which includes the ability to monitor, respond, anticipate, and learn, can be enhanced for trainees through simulation of realistic scenarios enhanced by augmented reality. Active learning strategies can enhance simulation-based training, particularly the mental model articulation principle where students are prompted to anticipate what will happen next and the reflection principle where students self-assess their performance compared to a gold standard expert model. In this paper, we compared simulation-based training for trauma care with

The Unheard Partner in Adapted Physical Activity Community Service Learning.

Community service learning (CSL), built on collaborative, reciprocal, and diverse disability-community partnerships, is a taken-for-granted pedagogical practice in adapted physical activity. Thus far, the CSL experiences of community members as they support student learning are virtually unknown. The purpose of the study was to understand how community members experienced an undergraduate adapted physical activity CSL course. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis research approach, 9 adults (2 female, 7 male, mean age 50 years) experiencing disability participated in individual and

Attitudes of experiential education directors regarding tobacco sales in pharmacies in the USA.

OBJECTIVES: Accreditation guidelines in the USA suggest that experiential sites for pharmacy students should demonstrate 'a strong commitment to health promotion and illness prevention'; however, most community pharmacies sell tobacco products. This study aimed to determine the proportion of students rotating through advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) sites where tobacco is sold and experiential education directors' perception regarding the sales of tobacco in APPE sites. METHODS: A brief survey was distributed by mail to experiential education directors at US pharmacy schools. The

Five heads are better than one: preliminary results of team-based learning in a communication disorders graduate course.

BACKGROUND: Clinical problem-solving is fundamental to the role of the speech-language pathologist in both the diagnostic and treatment processes. The problem-solving often involves collaboration with clients and their families, supervisors, and other professionals. Considering the importance of cooperative problem-solving in the profession, graduate education in speech-language pathology should provide experiences to foster the development of these skills. One evidence-based pedagogical approach that directly targets these abilities is team-based learning (TBL). TBL is a small-group instructi

International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Catalyst for interprofessional education and collaborative practice.

Patient-centred and community-based care is required for promotion of health equity. To enhance patient-centred interprofessional care, the World Health Organization recommends using the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Stellenbosch University's Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) strategy has promoted using ICF since 2010. Undergraduate medical students on rural clinical placements are expected to use ICF in approaching and managing patients. Students' ability to develop interprofessional care plans using ICF

General Network Learning Rules Based on DNA Strand Displacement for Thyroid Disease Prediction.

Learning rules are critical to the problem-solving ability of neural networks. Significant progress has been made in neural networks based on deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strand displacement (DSD). Traditional chemical reaction networks (CRNs) usually focus on the implementation of one type of learning rule. The coexistence of multiple learning rules remains challenging. In this article, CRNs based on DSD are constructed. The networks consist of a weight multiplication module, an activation function module, a learning signal module, a weight update module, and a weight output module. By explori

Big data dimensionality reduction-based supervised machine learning algorithms for NASH diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) that can cause liver failure-based morbidity remains a challenging research problem since there is no confirmed and effective approach for its early and accurate diagnosis yet. A large amount of medical data is collected to diagnose the NASH where the majority of them are redundant. METHODS: This paper initially focuses on selecting the most informative blood test data among the collected big data with the Pearson correlation statistical approach and modified Particle Swarm Optimization with Artificial Neural Networks (PSO-ANN)

Teaching with technology: learning outcomes for a combined dental and dental hygiene online hybrid oral histology course.

Among the challenges leaders in dental and allied dental education have faced in recent years is a shortage of well-qualified faculty members, especially in some specialty areas of dentistry. One proposed solution has been the use of technology. At the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, the departure of a faculty member who taught the highly specialized content in oral histology and embryology provided the opportunity to implement distance delivery of that course. The course is taught once a year to a combined group of dental and dental hygiene students. Previous to spring

A Novel Diabetes Healthcare Disease Prediction Framework Using Machine Learning Techniques.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Diabetes is a chronic disease that continues to be a significant and global concern since it affects the entire population's health. It is a metabolic disorder that leads to high blood sugar levels and many other problems such as stroke, kidney failure, and heart and nerve problems. Several researchers have attempted to construct an accurate diabetes prediction model over the years. However, this subject still faces significant open research issues due to a lack of appropriate data sets and prediction approaches, which pushes researchers to use big data analytics and machine learning (ML)-base

Tag team simulation: An innovative approach for promoting active engagement of participants and observers during group simulations.

Active participation in immersive simulation experiences can result in technical and non-technical skill enhancement. However, when simulations are conducted in large groups, maintaining the interest of observers so that they do not disengage from the learning experience can be challenging. We implemented Tag Team Simulation with the aim of ensuring that both participants and observers had active and integral roles in the simulation. In this paper we outline the features of this innovative approach and provide an example of its application to a pain simulation. Evaluation was conducted using t

Quantifying internal medicine resident clinical experience using resident-selected primary diagnosis codes.

BACKGROUND: While experiential learning is a desirable goal of residency education, little is known regarding the actual clinical experience of internal medicine residents during their training. METHODS: We modified an electronic patient handoff tool to include a system for resident entry of a primary diagnosis for each of their patients. Using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) system, we created two methods to select the code: 1) an organ system-based dropdown list containing frequently used codes; and 2) a search option for the complete ICD-9 database. Experiences with an in-training community service model in the control of zoonotic sleeping sickness in Uganda.

By 2006, the acute and zoonotic Tripanosoma brucei rhodesiense sleeping sickness in Uganda was spreading northward, leading to fear of a merger with the chronic Tripanosoma brucei gambiese type that affects people in the northwest of the country. Eliminating infection in cattle was urgent because they had been confirmed to be spreading the zoonotic type, and eliminating infection would reduce the animal reservoir and subsequently reduce transmission of sleeping sickness. In this article, we describe how the staff and students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Makerere University, adjusted
