Intestinal parasites of dogs on the Galapagos Islands.

Dogs on the Galapagos Islands are a unique population created by isolation from the mainland and regulations prohibiting further importation. The effect of infectious agents of these domestic dogs on the indigenous fauna is largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs on the Galapagos Islands. Fecal samples were collected from 97 dogs presented during neutering campaigns on Santa Cruz (n=51), San Cristobal (n=17), and Isabela (n=29) islands. Feces were evaluated for parasites by microscopic examination after zinc sulfate centrifugat

Current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in Mediterranean and African regions.

Epidemiological data on food-borne parasitic zoonoses of Mediterranean and African regions are fragmentary. Several studies indicate that toxoplasmosis frequently occurs in Africa, but the epidemiological patterns in these countries are far from being complete. Serological investigations have been carried out with different methods and the results are not always comparable. Food habits, presence or absence of domestic and/or synanthropic felines, and environmental characteristics (damp or dry areas) seem to influence the prevalence of infection in man from 15 to over 60%. There are few reports

Bovine fetal encephalitis and myocarditis associated with protozoal infections.

Bovine fetuses submitted to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System were evaluated during a 2-year period (1987 to 1989) for the presence of multifocal necrotizing nonsuppurative encephalitis, nonsuppurative myocarditis, or tissue protozoa. Eighty-two of 445 (18%) fetuses submitted met these histologic criteria. Fetuses were from 54 dairy and two beef herds located throughout the state. In 17 fetuses (21%) protozoa were found in fetal tissues. Protozoa were found in brain parenchyma of ten fetuses (12%), in endothelial cells in four fetuses (5%), in cardiac myofibers in one fetu

Occurrence of Kalicephalus, Strongyloides, and Rhabdias nematodes as most common gastrointestinal parasites in captive snakes of German households and zoological gardens.

Nowadays, snakes established as domestic exotic pets, harboring numerous (zoonotic) gastrointestinal parasites. In this parasitological survey, we used direct saline fecal smears (DSFS) to examine 586 stool samples from 71 different snake species either kept as pets in households or in zoological gardens in Germany. In addition to DSFS, carbol-fuchsin-fecal smears (n = 296), coproantigen ELISA tests (n = 98), and immunofluorescence assays (IFA; n = 77) for the detection reptile Cryptosporidium infections were conducted. Complete dissections of deceased snakes (n = 63) were also performed in or

Prevalence of zoonotic intestinal parasites in domestic and stray dogs in a rural area of Iran.

Certain zoonotic parasites are enteropathogens in dogs that cause serious human disease such as cystic echinococcosis, human alveolar echinococcosis, visceral larva migrans, and ocular larva migrans. This study investigated the prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs in the Chenaran County, Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran. Sampling was carried out randomly in 17 villages from November 2009 to January 2010. Seventy-seven fecal samples from 28 domestic and 49 stray dogs were examined using sieving/flotation and modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining. Intestinal parasites were found in 51 of the 77 (6

Risk of Environmental Contamination by Gastrointestinal Parasites in Public Areas of the Central Plateau Microregion of Brazil: A Public Health Concern.

The risk of zoonotic parasitic infections is closely linked to direct and indirect interactions between animals and humans. The mutual coexistence of species in public spaces predisposes individuals to gastrointestinal parasitosis owing to various social and hygienic-sanitary factors. This study aimed to assess the risk of environmental contamination by gastrointestinal parasites in fecal samples collected from parks and public squares in 18 municipalities located in a microregion of the central plateau of Brazil, correlating the collection with the population size of each municipality. We col

SURVEY FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASE IN THE SOUTH AMERICAN FUR SEAL (ARCTOCEPHALUS AUSTRALIS) POPULATION AT PUNTA SAN JUAN, PERU.

The Peruvian population of the South American fur seal ( Arctocephalus australis ) is a distinct evolutionarily significant unit that is endangered. One of the largest rookeries for this species in Peru is located within the Punta San Juan marine protected area (15°22'S, 75°12'W). To better understand the current health status of this population, exposure to 10 pinniped pathogens was evaluated in adult female fur seals (n=29) via serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques in November 2010. The results suggest this population is naïve to canine and phocine distemper viruses (serum

Epidemiological Insights into Endoparasites of Brown Bears (Ursus arctos) in Greece.

Brown bear populations in Greece face multiple threats, and parasitic infections may pose an additional risk to these vulnerable animals. This study represents the first comprehensive assessment of endoparasite occurrence, prevalence, and seasonality in brown bears in Greece, in relation to geographical location and the animal's different physiological phases. A total of 918 faecal samples were collected over a three-year period from regions with brown bear presence in Greece. For each sample, the date of collection and the coordinates of the site were recorded. Samples were examined using sed

Molecular characterization and serodiagnostic evaluation of the Echinococcus ortleppi recombinant glutaredoxin 1 protein for cystic echinococcosis in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.), adversely affects the physiology of the vital organs in which they grow. Condemnation of meat causes substantial economic loss to the livestock industry. Conventionally the infection is detected by necropsy as serological diagnosis of the infection in livestock is ambiguous. Identification of specific diagnostic antigens would be a substitute for the cyst fluid antigens which lack adequate diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. BLAST analysis supported by the negligible pairwise nucleotide dist

Parasite survey on a captive wolf population using classical techniques and ELISA coproantigen detection, USA.

As laws change around the United States, wildlife that were once kept as companion animals are now often confiscated by local authorities. They are then euthanized unless a home is found for them at a sanctuary. Wolf sanctuaries are, therefore, becoming increasingly important for their conservation and management. However, little data is available on best practices for the health management of captive wolves, including data on parasitic diseases. Our objective was to assess the prevalence of parasites of captive wolves combining classical coprological techniques and immunoassays based on the d

Pathogen exposure and blood chemistry in the Washington, USA population of northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni).

Northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) from Washington State, United States were evaluated in 2011 to determine health status and pathogen exposure. Antibodies to Brucella spp. (10%) and influenza A virus (23%) were detected for the first time in this population in 2011. Changes in clinical pathology values (serum chemistries), exposure to pathogens, and overall health of the population over the last decade were assessed by comparing 2011 data to the data collected on this population in 2001-2002. Several serum chemistry parameters were different between study years and sexes but were no

[Cardiac involvement in adults with echinococcosis].

Experiments have established that the first target for echinococcus is the liver and lung and that for pathogenic fungi and protozoa is the heart. Adult patients with hepatic hydatid disease complicated by paecilomycosis have been found to have atypical paecilomycosis-associated myocarditis, the treatment of which was developed by the authors, by using antibiotics, fungicides, and homeopathic remedies.

Observations on the endoparasites of sika deer (Cervus nippon) kept in captivity (deer farms and parks) in Germany.

Sika deer, primarily animals of Japanese origin, have been introduced into Europe and, following release into the wild, established free-ranging populations in several countries, including Germany. In addition to the wild populations, sika deer are still maintained in deer parks and there are also deer farms carrying sika deer for venison production. However, to date there is no information about the parasite fauna that infect farmed sika deer and only little knowledge on parasites of sika deer in parks. This work summarizes the results of the examination for endoparasites of viscera and muscl

Toxoplasma gondii AAP7 is essential for functionally connecting the IMC embedded apical annuli to the plasma membrane.

The Toxoplasma gondii cytoskeleton contains an intermediate filament network, supporting a quilt of alveolar sheets forming the inner membrane complex (IMC), undergirded by 22 subpellicular microtubules (SPMTs). Embedded within the IMC are the apical annuli: 5-6 ring-shaped pores facilitating dense granule exocytosis. Here we describe a novel apical annuli protein, AAP7. AAP7 depletion causes a severe fitness defect. In stable AAP7-depleted (ATc-resistant) parasites, LMBD3 no longer traffics to the annuli, but accumulates among the secretory organelles. This suggests AAP7 is required to traffi

Parasitic diseases of equids in Iran (1931-2020): a literature review.

Parasitic infections can cause many respiratory, digestive and other diseases and contribute to some performance conditions in equids. However, knowledge on the biodiversity of parasites of equids in Iran is still limited. The present review covers all the information about parasitic diseases of horses, donkeys, mules and wild asses in Iran published as articles in Iranian and international journals, dissertations and congress papers from 1931 to July 2020. Parasites so far described in Iranian equids include species of 9 genera of the Protozoa (Trypanosoma, Giardia, Eimeria, Klossiella, Crypt

Serological evidence of arboviruses and coccidia infecting horses in the Amazonian region of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Arboviruses and protozoans can cause neurologic disorders in horses. In Brazilian Amazon, several horses presenting signs compatible with disorders caused by these infectious agents have been observed. OBJECTIVE: To contribute to the knowledge of this epidemiological picture, we sought to construct a serological diagnostic panel for neurotrophic infectious agents in local horses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 213 blood samples from horses were collected from 29 farms in three municipalities. Samples were evaluated and considered positive when they met the following criteria: t
