Maternal variant in the upstream of FOXP3 gene on the X chromosome is associated with recurrent infertility in Japanese Black cattle.

BACKGROUND: Repeat breeding, which is defined as cattle failure to conceive after three or more inseminations in the absence of clinical abnormalities, is a substantial problem in cattle breeding. To identify maternal genetic variants of repeat breeding in Japanese Black cattle, we selected 29 repeat-breeding heifers that failed to conceive following embryo transfer (ET) and conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using the traits. RESULTS: We found that a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP; g.92,377,635A > G) in the upstream region of the FOXP3 gene on the X chromosome was highly a

Effects of various breeding strategies on diploid drone frequency and quantitative traits in a honey bee population.

When selecting in a finite population of honeybees there is a conflict between gain in a quantitative trait and increasing homozygosity, and therefore the frequency of inviable diploid drones. The consequences when using different mating, import, and selection strategies on diploid drone frequency and genetic gain, was explored with Monte Carlo computer simulations.Within a closed population breeding structure, mass selection gave the highest genetic gain in the quantitative trait, but also the largest increase in percentage diploid drones and queens with unacceptably-low brood viability. Mass

Exploration of breeding and production conditions of Red Sindhi, Cholistani, and non-descript cattle: a prerequisite towards the development of a community-based breeding program.

The establishment of community-based breeding programs necessitates the identification of prevalent breeding practices and the characterization of associated production systems. This study investigates the breeding and production conditions of Red Sindhi, Cholistani, and non-descript cattle across four districts in Punjab, Pakistan. Data were collected through a field survey utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire administered to 450 randomly selected farmers. The findings reveal that the majority of respondents were male and served as the primary decision-makers in their households. A signi

Multifactorial Evaluation of Regrouping Effects on Performance and Welfare in Two Italian Dual-Purpose Chicken Breeds: Bianca di Saluzzo and Bionda Piemontese.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the ability of two Italian slow-growing poultry breeds (namely, Bionda Piemontese, BP, and Bianca di Saluzzo, BS) to cope with a stressful event, such as collective grouping, using a multifactorial approach. A total of 120 hens of BP and BS breeds were homogenously distributed, according to breed, in 12 pens (10 hens/pen; 6 pens/breed), from 18 to 49 weeks of age. At 50 weeks of age, hens were regrouped (Stressful Farm Practice, SFP), by removing separators, both in indoor and outdoor areas. At 49 weeks of age, 24 hens/breed were randomly selecte

[Monogenic disorders and traits in Swiss suckler cows - A review].

Suckler cow farming is a key part of Swiss beef production, representing extensive farming practices and high standards of animal welfare. Around 7 % of the country's cattle are registered with the relevant breeding association. Switzerland boasts a high degree of genetic diversity, with 38 beef and dual-purpose breeds. This study aimed to systematically catalogue known recessive genetic defects and selected inherited traits of the most common Swiss suckler cow breeds and determine their prevalence. Worldwide, 67 monogenic recessive genetic defects have been identified in beef cattle. Of these

Understanding breeding preferences among small-scale cattle producers: implications for livestock improvement programmes.

Livestock production provides a pathway for improving livelihoods and reducing poverty in semi-arid tropical regions. However, this contribution has been affected by low livestock productivity. Most livestock programmes have also failed due to, among other things, the inability to understand the dynamics in smallholder breeding preferences. Using data from the sub-humid region in Zimbabwe, this paper sought to provide evidence on smallholder cattle breeding preferences and the implication on livestock improvement programmes. It applies the choice experiment approach to model farmer preferences

A limited number of Y chromosome lineages is present in North American Holsteins.

Holsteins are the most numerous dairy cattle breed in North America and the breed has undergone intensive selection for improving milk production and conformation. Theoretically, this intensive selection could lead to a reduction of the effective population size and reduced genetic diversity. The objective of this study was to investigate the effective population size of the Holstein Y chromosome and the effects of limited Y chromosome lineages on male reproduction and the future of the breed. Paternal pedigree information of 62,897 Holstein bulls born between 1950 and 2013 in North America an

Water quality characteristics of breeding habitats in relation to the density of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in domestic settings in Gampaha district of Sri Lanka.

In spite of the unavailability of measures to target dengue control in human populations, the promising way of combating the disease is by controlling vector mosquito larvae and their breeding habitats. Water quality characteristics of the breeding habitats of dengue vectors are among the crucial parameters that determine the female mosquito's oviposition and breeding. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the habitat characteristics of dengue vector mosquitoes by assessing the water quality of positive breeding habitats using the weighted arithmetic water quality ind

Integrating genomic and phenomic data improves prediction of key traits in potato breeding.

Potato breeding faces challenges due to clonal propagation and complex polyploid genetics, limiting the rate of genetic gain. Predictive breeding integrating genomic and high-throughput phenotypic data offers potential to enhance selection accuracy. Here we evaluated multiple regression models combining genomic single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data and unmanned aerial vehicle-derived image-based traits across diverse potato clones and cultivars to predict key agronomic traits. Combining genomic and phenomic data significantly improved prediction accuracy for total tuber yield compared with

Avoiding the tragedies of parasite tolerance in Darwinian beekeeping.

Bee declines have been partly attributed to the impacts of invasive or emerging parasite outbreaks. For western honeybees, Apis mellifera, major losses are associated with the virus-vectoring mite, Varroa destructor. In response, beekeepers have focused breeding efforts aimed at conferring resistance to this key parasite. One method of many is survival-based beekeeping where colonies that survive despite significant Varroa infestations produce subsequent colonies. We argue that this 'hands-off' approach will not always lead to Varroa resistance evolving but rather tolerance. Tolerance minimize

Fertility management of bulls to improve beef cattle productivity.

Global demand for animal proteins is increasing, necessitating increased efficiency of global food production. Improving reproductive efficiency of beef cattle, especially bull fertility, is particularly critical, as one bull can breed thousands of females (by artificial insemination). Identifying the genetic basis of male reproductive traits that influence male and female fertility, and using this information for selection, would improve herd fertility. Early-life selection of elite bulls by genomic approaches and feeding them to optimize postpubertal reproductive potential are essential for

BSA-Seq-Based QTL Mapping for the Height of the First Fruiting Branch Node of Cotton and the Development of Molecular Markers.

The height of the first fruiting branch node (HFFBN) is a core indicator for mechanical harvesting of cotton, and the development of molecular markers for this trait is important for accelerating the breeding process. In this study, using bulked segregant analysis coupled with whole-genome sequencing (BSA-seq), one quantitative trait locus (QTL) associated with the HFFBN was mapped; a molecular marker, qFBH7, associated with the HFFBN of cotton was developed; and its application value was systematically evaluated. A total of 20 lines with extreme phenotypes were selected from the recombinant i

Use of Morphology and Endocrinology to Predict Sex in California Sheephead: Evidence of Altered Timing of Sex Change at Santa Catalina Island, California.

To estimate the health of the California sheephead Semicossyphus pulcher fishery, a 2004 stock assessment used available biological data that were collected decades prior to an increase in fishing pressure. However, a recent study has found that sex ratios, growth rates, survivorship, and average sizes of females and males have changed in response to size-selective fishing in some California sheephead populations. To better understand the potential changes in protogynous California sheephead, this study sought to determine (1) whether external morphology was still an accurate method of predict

Assessing genomic diversity and signatures of selection in Original Braunvieh cattle using whole-genome sequencing data.

BACKGROUND: Autochthonous cattle breeds are an important source of genetic variation because they might carry alleles that enable them to adapt to local environment and food conditions. Original Braunvieh (OB) is a local cattle breed of Switzerland used for beef and milk production in alpine areas. Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data of 49 key ancestors, we characterize genomic diversity, genomic inbreeding, and signatures of selection in Swiss OB cattle at nucleotide resolution. RESULTS: We annotated 15,722,811 SNPs and 1,580,878 Indels including 10,738 and 2763 missense deleterious and

Advancing provitamin A biofortification in sorghum: from allele mining and marker development to prebreeding and breeding.

Allele mining for provitamin A biofortification in sorghum is advanced with new pre-bred germplasm and markers that are trait-predictive in diverse germplasm and breeding programs. Provitamin A biofortification of the staple cereal crop sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) could reduce vitamin A deficiency in low-income countries of sub-Saharan Africa. To advance mining of alleles that confer high provitamin A from genebank accessions, we developed prebreeding germplasm and trait-predictive markers, and established the utility of these markers in a range of prebreeding and breeding materials.

Differential expression of HSF1 and HSPA6 genes and physiological responses in Angus and Simmental cattle breeds.

The aim of this study was to identify whether more and less adapted Angus and Simmental cattle differed in physiological responses and expression of the heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) and the heat shock 70 kDa protein 6 (HSPA6), when subjected to heat stress. Thirty bulls (n = 15 ANG; n = 15 SIM), extremes "more adapted" and "less adapted" within each breed were selected to the heat tolerance test. They were selected according to an index based on the average of the respiratory rate obtained on two hot summer days from one hundred bulls. Supplementary testosterone inhibits paternal care in a tropically breeding sparrow, Zonotrichia capensis.

In most male birds that exhibit paternal care, elevation in testosterone above the breeding baseline reduces nestling provisioning, which can be detrimental to offspring survival. Mechanisms that may allow some males to avoid this detrimental effect of elevated testosterone include (1) decreased sensitivity to testosterone's effects on behavior and (2) uncoupling of testosterone secretion from territorial challenges (thus reducing the number of transient elevations in testosterone above the breeding baseline). Both of these "cost-avoidance" mechanisms have been documented, but whether selectio

Homing and feral pigeons differ in hippocampal formation neuron size: a Golgi study.

Artificial selection for behavioural traits can significantly affect the anatomy of brain regions related to the behaviour under selection. The homing pigeon (Columba livia) is a prime example of how anatomical changes can arise from artificial selection. Compared with feral and other pigeon breeds, homing pigeons have a much higher density and number neurons in the hippocampal formation, a region important for spatial memory and homing. Neuron numbers and density are, however, only one component of a brain region's processing capacity and whether hippocampal formation neuron size and morpholo
