Ultrasonography of subcutaneous foreign bodies: differences depending on their nature, complications, and potential diagnostic errors.

Patients with penetrating wounds with suspected foreign bodies retained in the wound are often seen in emergency departments. Imaging studies are necessary to rule out the presence of retained foreign bodies. Plain-film X-rays, however, are only useful when the foreign bodies contain radiopaque material (metal, glass, stone, and some plastics). In cases with strong diagnostic suspicion and negative plain films, other imaging tests are necessary. Ultrasonography has proven useful in the identification and location of both radiopaque and radiotransparent foreign bodies. Ultrasonography enables e

The fabella syndrome - a rare cause of posterolateral knee pain: a review of the literature and two case reports.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this article was to evaluate the risks and benefits of non-operative treatment versus surgical excision of a fabella causing posterolateral knee pain. We performed a systematic review of literature and also present two case reports.Twelve publications were found in a PubMed literature review searching the word "fabella syndrome". Non-operative treatment and surgical excision of the fabella has been described. CASE PRESENTATION: Two patients presented to our outpatient clinic with persisting posterolateral knee pain. In both cases the presence of a fabella was identi

Common foot and ankle injuries in dance.

Classical ballet is a popular but physically demanding activity. Minor injuries become increasingly common as the dancer encounters the greater workload of professional dancing. The doctor must have a basic knowledge of ballet technique and an understanding of the mental approach of dancers to accurately diagnose and effectively treat their injuries. The practice of dancing on the toes, the exaggerated turn out of the feet, and the extreme flexibility of the hips and spine all lead to unusual injuries. With informed conservative treatment, most ballet injuries will heal, but surgery is occasio

Lateral sesamoid position in hallux valgus: correlation with the conventional radiological assessment.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to quantify the severity of the hallux valgus based on the lateral sesamoid position and to establish a correlation of our simple assessment method with the conventional radiological assessments. METHODS: We reviewed one hundred and twenty two dorso-plantar weight bearing radiographs of feet. The intermetatarsal and hallux valgus angles were measured by the conventional methods; and the position of lateral sesamoid in relation to first metatarsal neck was assessed by our new and simple method. RESULTS: Significant correlation was noted between intermetatarsal angle and l

Variation in position of the medial fabella in West Highland white terriers and other dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether West Highland white terriers exhibit significant variation in the position of the medial fabella compared to both small and large breed dogs. METHODS: Criteria for the normal location of the medial fabella on a caudocranial radiograph were established. A retrospective analysis was undertaken of a consecutive series of bilateral caudocranial stifle joint radiographs from 70 West Highland white terriers, 100 small and 100 large control dogs by three reviewers. Medial fabellar location, cruciate ligament disease and medial patellar luxation were examined within

Functional and radiographic outcomes of hallux valgus correction by mini-invasive surgery with Reverdin-Isham and Akin percutaneous osteotomies: a longitudinal prospective study with a 48-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) represents one of the most innovative surgical treatments of hallux valgus (HV). However, long-term outcomes still remain a matter of discussion within the orthopaedic community. The purpose of this longitudinal prospective study was to evaluate radiographic and functional outcomes in patients with mild-to-severe HV who underwent Reverdin-Isham and Akin percutaneous osteotomy, following exostosectomy and lateral release. METHODS: Eighty patients with mild-to-severe symptomatic HV were treated by MIS. Clinical evaluation was assessed preoperatively,

Irreducible dislocation of the thumb interphalangeal joint due to displaced flexor pollicis longus tendon: case report and new reduction technique.

Dislocation of the thumb interphalangeal (IP) joint is uncommon because of the inherent stability of the joint. Cases in which reduction was blocked by the volar plate, the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon, the sesamoid bone, and an osteochondral fragment have been described in the literature. This article reports a case of closed thumb IP joint dislocation caused by the displacement of the FPL tendon. A new percutaneous reduction technique for this injury will also be presented. A 63-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with an obvious thumb deformity. Radiographs confirmed dorsa

Osteonecrosis and stress-related subchondral injuries in the elite athlete: a review on etiology, clinical signs, and management.

This review examines osteonecrosis (ON) in elite athletes, encompassing bone infarcts (BI) in the medullary canal of the metaphysis or diaphysis and epiphyseal subchondral avascular necrosis (AVN), which is more likely to lead to joint collapse. Unlike in the general population where systemic disease and trauma are primary causes, chronic repetitive microtrauma and stress-related injury are significant contributors in athletes. This review therefore distinguishes between primary ON and secondary ON, which develops on a background of stress or insufficiency fractures, relevant in this populatio

Radiological approach to metatarsalgia in current practice: an educational review.

Metatarsalgia, characterized by forefoot pain, is frequent and is primarily due to foot static disorders. Initial evaluation with weight-bearing radiographs is essential, allowing precise analysis of the architecture of the foot. Ultrasound is useful for soft tissue and tendon examination and provides the best clinical correlation. Computed Tomography provides detailed bone assessment and is helpful for pre-operative planning. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the gold standard modality, offering superior soft tissue contrast. The common causes of metatarsalgia include hallux pathologies (hallux v
