As a toxic element of global concern, the elevated concentration of antimony (Sb) in the environment has attracted increasing attention. Microorganisms have been reported as important driving forces for Sb transformation. Iron (Fe) is the most important metal associated element of Sb, however, how Fe-bearing minerals affect the biological transformation of Sb is still unclear. In this study, the effects of Fe-bearing minerals on biological Sb(V) reduction were investigated by employing a marine Shewanella sp. CNZ-1 (CNZ-1). Our results showed that the presence of hematite, magnetite and ferrih

Food dyes, or color additives, are often added into foods, cosmetics and beverages during processing to improve the sensory attributes of the final products. However, the toxicity of tartrazine (TZ), one of the most common azo-dyes, is still unclear, and needs to be ascertained by further study. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of TZ consumption on health by using a teleost, crucian carp (Carassius auratus) as the experimental fish. TZ consumption (1.4, 5.5 and 10 mg/kg bwt/day) could cause severe histopathological and cellular alterations in intestine and liver. T

The distribution of environmental pollutants and their associated metabolic perturbations within tissues is essential for understanding toxicological mechanisms. However, whether hexafluoropropylene oxide tetramer acid (HFPO-TeA), an emerging alternative to legacy PFASs, induces spatially heterogeneous metabolic disruption in aquatic organisms remains unclear. Here, adult zebrafish were exposed to HFPO-TeA to investigate hepatic phospholipid spatial distribution and gut microbial dysfunction. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI

Some photosynthetically active bacteria transfer electrons across their membranes, generating electrical photocurrents in biofilms. Devices harvesting solar energy by this mechanism are currently limited by the charge transfer to the electrode. Here, we report the enhancement of bioelectrochemical photocurrent harvesting using electrodes with porosities on the nanometre and micrometre length scale. For the cyanobacteria Nostoc punctiforme and Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 on structured indium-tin-oxide electrodes, an increase in current generation by two orders of magnitude is observed compared to

Biogenic catalysts have been studied over the last 10 years in freshwater and soil environments, but neither their formation nor their application has been explored in marine ecosystems. The objective of this study was to develop a biogenic nanopalladium-based remediation method for reducing chlorinated hydrocarbons from marine environments by employing indigenous marine bacteria. Thirty facultative aerobic marine strains were isolated from two contaminated sites, the Lagoon of Mar Chica, Morocco, and Priolo Gargallo Syracuse, Italy. Eight strains showed concurrent palladium precipitation and

Microbial contamination in ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products poses a significant food safety risk, as evidenced by previous reports of high aerobic plate counts and pathogen prevalence. Understanding the post-unpacking dynamics of bacterial communities is crucial for guiding consumer practices. In this study, 90 RTE meat samples of which the varieties include beef products, chicken products, duck products, pig products, mutton products, and donkey products, were collected to analyze microbial community structure by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. These samples were collected on the 7th, 14th and

Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides are ubiquitous in paddy soils and play a key role in Cd retention. Recent studies report that pyrogenic carbon (PC) may largely affect the microbial transformation processes of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides, yet the impact of PC on the fate of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxide-associated Cd during redox fluctuations remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of PC on Cd retention during microbial (Shewanella oneidensis MR-1) transformation of Cd(II)-bearing ferrihydrite under varying redox conditions. The results showed that in the absence of PC, microbial reduction of ferrihydr

Complement factor I (Cfi) is a soluble serine protease which plays a crucial role in the modulation of complement cascades. In the presence of substrate modulating cofactors (such as complement factor H, C4bp, CR1, etc), Cfi cleaves and inactivates C3b and C4b, thereby controlling the complement-mediated processes. In this study, we sequenced and characterized Cfi gene from Cynoglossus Semilaevis (designated as CsCfi) for the first time. The full-length cDNA of CsCfi was 2230 bp in length, including a 98 bp 5'-untranslated region (UTR), a 164 bp 3'-UTR and a 1968 bp open reading frame (ORF). I

Ion doping is widely employed to introduce defects in persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) to enhance the luminescence efficiency. However, the influence of ion doping on persistent luminescence remains insufficiently studied, and current doping strategies require further optimization. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of heterovalent K+ doping on the persistent luminescence of CaSc2O4:Tb PLNPs and further refined the doping strategy. Results indicate that the luminescence enhancement in CaSc2O4:Tb,K via K+ doping is seriously constrained by concentration quenc

Specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) are major contributors to the deterioration of fishery products and variations in their composition during fish storage deserve further investigation. In this study, we analysed the evolution of SSOs in fillets of Atlantic mackerel and rainbow trout during prolonged storage at 0 and 4 °C. SSOs were quantified and growth data were modelled to predict the shelf life of fillets, defined as the time to reach 6 log10 CFU/g for SSOs. Changes in the abundance of genera of SSOs were investigated using a culturomic approach, which involved the identification of coloni

The study investigated the influences of pure H2 and O2 introduction, simulating gases produced from the electrokinetic-enhanced bioremediation (EK-Bio), on TCE degradation, and the dynamic changes of the indigenous microbial communities. The dissolved hydrogen (DH) and oxygen (DO) concentrations ranged from 0.2 to 0.7 mg/L and 2.6 to 6.6 mg/L, respectively. The biological analysis was conducted by 16S rRNA sequencing and functional gene analyses. The results showed that the H2 introduction enhanced TCE degradation, causing a 90.4% TCE removal in the first 4 weeks, and 131.1 μM was reduced eve

Schwertmannite (Sch) is an iron-hydroxysulfate mineral commonly found in acid mine drainage contaminated environment. The transformation mechanism of Sch mediated by pure cultured iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) or sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) has been studied. However, FeRB and SRB widely coexist in the environment, the mechanism of Sch transformation by the consortia of FeRB and SRB is still unclear. This study investigated the Sch reduction by co-cultured Shewanella oneidensis (FeRB) and Desulfosporosinus meridiei (SRB). The results showed that co-culture of FeRB and SRB could accelerate t

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a clinically significant bacterial pathogen that poses a serious threat to aquaculture. However, there is limited information on Massilia isolates against pathogenic P. aeruginosa in aquaculture. In this study, a potential predator, M. varians isolate P2-4, was isolated from aquaculture sediment using Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis-pathogenic P. aeruginosa as the prey bacterium, and its genomic features, antibacterial-related genes, virulence genes, toxic metabolites, pathogenicity, antibacterial spectrum, and in vitro and in vivo antibacterial effects against

The degradation mechanism of MC-RR by an anaerobic degrading microbial community (ADMC), enriched from shrimp pond sediment, was investigated using LC-MS/MS, metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic analyses. Three key degradation products of 15N-labeled MC-RR were tentatively identified: Adda-Glu-Mdha-Ala (m/z 618.3216), a deamination product (m/z 600.2965), and Glu-MeAsp-Ala-Arg-CO2 (m/z 466.2233). The pathway was inferred to involve hydrolytic ring-opening at Arg-Adda or Ala-Arg bonds, followed by deamination, decarboxylation, and stepwise degradation into short peptides and amino acids. Environmental discharges of very high (mg/L) antibiotic levels from pharmaceutical production contributed to the selection, spread and persistence of antibiotic resistance. However, the effects of less antibiotic-polluted effluents (μg/L) from drug-formulation on exposed aquatic microbial communities are still scarce. Here we analyzed formulation effluents and sediments from the receiving creek collected at the discharge site (DW0), upstream (UP) and 3000 m downstream of discharge (DW3000) during winter and summer season. Chemical analyses indicated the largest amounts of trimethoprim (up to 5

BACKGROUND: Metallo-β-lactamases are bacterial enzymes that provide resistance to carbapenems, the most potent class of antibiotics. These enzymes are commonly encoded on mobile genetic elements, which, together with their broad substrate spectrum and lack of clinically useful inhibitors, make them a particularly problematic class of antibiotic resistance determinants. We hypothesized that there is a large and unexplored reservoir of unknown metallo-β-lactamases, some of which may spread to pathogens, thereby threatening public health. The aim of this study was to identify novel metallo-β-lact

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease resulting in chronic polymicrobial infections of the airways and progressive decline in lung function. To gain insight into the underlying causes of severe lung diseases, we aimed at comparing the airway microbiota detected in sputum of CF patients with stable lung function (S) versus those with a substantial decline in lung function (SD). Microbiota composition was investigated by using culture-based and culture-independent methods, and by performing multivariate and statistical analyses. Culture-based methods identified some microbial species associa

Postbiotics have recently emerged as a promising alternative to probiotics in aquaculture due to their improved safety, stability, and ease of application; however, the biological effects of postbiotics derived from Vibrio proteolyticus remain largely unexplored. In this study, we evaluated the impact of dietary supplementation with ethanol-inactivated V. proteolyticus DCF12.2 on the intestinal microbiota composition and transcriptomic profile of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Fish were fed a control diet (CTRL group) or a diet supplemented with 1% lyophilized ethanol-inactivated V. proteolyticus DC
