Language abilities and gestural communication in a girl with bilateral perisylvian syndrome: a clinical and rehabilitative follow-up.

We present the neuropsychological and linguistic follow-up of a girl with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria during 4 years of gestural and verbal speech therapy. Some researchers have suggested that children with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria mentally fail to reach the syntactic phase and do not acquire a productive morphology. This patient achieved a mean length of utterance in signs/gestures of 3.4, a syntactic phase of completion of the nuclear sentence and the use of morphological modifications. We discuss the link between gesture and language and formulate hypotheses on the role

Developmental Path in Input Modifications and the Use of Iconicity in Early Hearing Infant-Deaf Mother Interactions.

The study asked whether Deaf mothers seek to exploit the iconicity in signed languages to facilitate their infants' word learning. Two longitudinal case studies followed modifications that 2 Deaf mothers applied to their input while interacting with their hearing infants. Both mothers were sensitive to the communicative abilities of their infants in different periods of language acquisition, and adapted their inputs accordingly. In the prelinguistic period, infant-directed input was characterized by repetitiveness to facilitate the infant's visual perception. During the mid-one-word period, th

Immersion, Inclusion, Impact: Enhancing Educational Access for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students Through Immersive Technologies-A Systematic Literature Review.

Immersive technologies are increasingly used in education, yet their role in supporting the diverse communication and learning needs of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) learners remains underexamined. This PRISMA-guided systematic review synthesizes evidence on how augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, extended reality, and metaverse-based environments are applied in d/Dhh education. Searches of five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Google Scholar; 2014-2024) identified 30 studies (21 empirical, nine conceptual/design-focused). Data were s

Smart comprehend gesture based emotions recognition system for people with hearing disability utilizing spatio temporal graph convolutional network techniques.

Sign language (SL) is essential for communication among individuals with hearing or speech impairments. Facial emotion recognition plays a crucial role in improving expression analysis and assistive technologies when integrated with SL, specifically in fields like patient monitoring, psychoanalysis, and human-computer interaction. These applications directly assist the development of intelligent systems for communication and care. Gesture recognition (GR) can facilitate communication between machines and humans by enhancing this type of interaction. Machine learning (ML) is a part of artificia

Sociocultural perspectives of deaf parents on child-directed fingerspelling (birth-5).

Child-directed fingerspelling is an approach used by Deaf parents for communication, language, and literacy development. This study reports on findings from a qualitative intrinsic case study aimed at understanding how Deaf parents use fingerspelling with their young children. The research questions were: (1) What are the cultural beliefs of Deaf parents regarding fingerspelling with young children? (2) What are their patterns of use of child-directed fingerspelling in natural settings? Twenty-one Deaf families with 27 deaf children ages 5 years and under were interviewed via recorded Zoom mee

Preliminary development of the deaf childhood experiences scale.

We describe here the initial creation and validation of a tool designed to quantify certain unique life experiences of deaf individuals. The Deaf Childhood Experiences Scale (DCES) aims to provide empirical data on uniquely deaf life factors with the long-term goal of better understanding education, health, and quality of life outcomes among deaf populations. The methodology involved a mixed-methods approach of qualitative interviews with deaf community members to inform the creation of a quantitative assessment. This first version of the DCES comprises two main constructs-Language and Access,

The neural response to highly iconic signs in hearing learners and deaf signers.

Previous ERP studies have demonstrated that hearing learners of American Sign Language (ASL) show sensitivity to sign iconicity (a resemblance between form and meaning) prior to learning any signs. Highly iconic (transparent) signs elicited greater negativity in the N400 window than non-iconic signs when participants performed a task that did not require semantic processing (detect an occasional grooming gesture). Greater negativity was interpreted as evidence that participants implicitly recognized the meaning of the iconic signs. Here we investigated how this neural response changes after le

Explicating the Relationship Between ASL and English in Text Comprehension.

The discussion on the role of American Sign Language (ASL) in deaf students' reading development has been long and contentious. The students' limited knowledge of English has been commonly perceived as a culprit in making reading difficult. However, a more nuanced explanation of reading performance and its relationship with competence in ASL's potential role is needed. In the present study, multivariate analyses of the variance in the ASL and English comprehension performance of 91 middle school students at an ASL-English bilingual school revealed some important insights. Inference-making skil

Emergency Preparedness with People Who Sign: Toward the whole community approach.

The concept of the "whole community" involves including everyone in the community in preparing for emergencies, including members of often-overlooked groups. Deaf people who sign are one example of this type of group. An innovative model based on the whole community approach, Emergency Preparedness with People Who Sign (EPPS), is introduced in this article. This model focuses on members of the deaf community directly training first responders using a variety of techniques for effective communication and cultural understanding to achieve safety for all. This model was developed and field tested

Self-injurious behaviour in young children with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

The early development of self-injurious behaviour in three young boys (aged 17, 25, and 30 months at start of study) with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome was examined by means of parental interviews and by direct observations completed at 3 to 4 monthly intervals over an 18-month period. Results suggest that the self-injury began in a different way from that of other young children with autism and/or developmental disabilities in that, from the start, self-injurious responses were sudden and violent, rather than emerging gradually over time. Drastic measures, such as removal of the teeth or provision of

Deaf Child Signers' Reading Behaviors Are Predicted by Their Bilingual (Signed and Spoken) Vocabularies: Evidence from Eye-Tracking.

Deaf children who acquire a signed language at home and at school prior to learning to read are a unique group of developing bilinguals. They are first-language users of a signed language (e.g., American Sign Language; ASL) and second-language users of the written form of the ambient spoken language (e.g., English). Because signed languages do not possess orthographies that are widely used, deaf readers typically read in their second language. This profile stands in contrast to hearing bilingual readers, who read in their first language and, sometimes, their second language. In studies of chil

Perceptions of Deaf education in the Deaf community.

This article explores perceptions about education for the Deaf community within Deaf communities in Ireland, Finland, and the UK. Ireland, Finland, and the UK all provide legal recognition of sign languages in various forms. However, it is important to understand how these laws impact Deaf people, what their experiences with the law is, and how might the law be altered to improve the lives of people it purports to serve. Interview data from Deaf people across the three countries is presented here which explores these experiences. When asked about what they might improve in the law, an overwhel

Interpersonal Distance Preferences in Deaf Signers and Hearing Individuals.

Interpersonal distance plays a critical role in communication and social interactions. Here we investigated whether deaf individuals that use sign language differ from hearing (non-signer) individuals in their preferred interpersonal distance. Specifically, we asked a group of deaf participants (all signers) and control hearing participants to report their preferred social distance from a stranger using a computer-presented stop-distance paradigm. Results show that deaf participants prefer larger interpersonal distances than hearing individuals. We suggest that preference for a larger interper

Assistive communication system using deep sparse autoencoder with feature learning to assist people with hearing disabilities.

Hearing loss is a sensory damage, a hidden disability that affects numerous adults globally. However, gesture recognition plays a significant role in overcoming several problems and challenges in human life, particularly for persons with hearing impairments and speech disabilities. The ability of machines to comprehend human actions and interpret sensory data is exploited across a wide range of applications. Automatic gesture recognition is used to present a response in a computerised learning environment to practice sign language for the deaf community. Deaf people worldwide face challenges c

Promoting cultural awareness, professionalism, and communication skills in medicine through anatomy: The Deaf culture session.

The anatomy curriculum is a place where professionalism can be learned and practiced, including training in cultural competence and communication skills for working with diverse populations. One population that has received little attention in terms of medical education are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/DHH) patients, although there is much evidence to support health care disparities in this population. Several major contributing factors include differing views of deafness between medical professionals and those who are culturally Deaf, a lack of understanding of Deaf culture and American Sign

Iconicity in spatial language guides visual attention: A comparison between signers' and speakers' eye gaze during message preparation.

To talk about space, spoken languages rely on arbitrary and categorical forms (e.g., left, right). In sign languages, however, the visual-spatial modality allows for iconic encodings (motivated form-meaning mappings) of space in which form and location of the hands bear resemblance to the objects and spatial relations depicted. We assessed whether the iconic encodings in sign languages guide visual attention to spatial relations differently than spatial encodings in spoken languages during message preparation at the sentence level. Using a visual world production eye-tracking paradigm, we comp

Real-time simulation of hand motion for prosthesis control.

Individuals with hand amputation suffer substantial loss of independence. Performance of sophisticated prostheses is limited by the ability to control them. To achieve natural and simultaneous control of all wrist and hand motions, we propose to use real-time biomechanical simulation to map between residual EMG and motions of the intact hand. Here we describe a musculoskeletal model of the hand using only extrinsic muscles to determine whether real-time performance is possible. Simulation is 1.3 times faster than real time, but the model is locally unstable. Methods are discussed to increase s
