Prediction underlying comprehension of human motion: an analysis of Deaf signer and non-signer EEG in response to visual stimuli.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory inference and top-down predictive processing, reflected in human neural activity, play a critical role in higher-order cognitive processes, such as language comprehension. However, the neurobiological bases of predictive processing in higher-order cognitive processes are not well-understood. METHODS: This study used electroencephalography (EEG) to track participants' cortical dynamics in response to Austrian Sign Language and reversed sign language videos, measuring neural coherence to optical flow in the visual signal. We then used machine learning to assess entropy-bas

Interpreting Modulation Transfer Function in Endoscopic Imaging: Spatial-Frequency Conversion Across Imaging Spaces and the Digital Image Domain with Case Studies.

Endoscopes are widely used in medicine, making objective evaluation of imaging performance essential for device development and quality assurance. Image resolution is commonly characterized by the modulation transfer function (MTF); however, its interpretation depends critically on how spatial frequency is defined and reported. Because spatial frequency is directly tied to sampling, it can be expressed in different units across the imaging chain, including the object plane, image sensor plane, and digital image domain. Inconsistent conversion between these spaces and domains can mislead compar

Attentional shifting and the role of the dorsal pathway in visual word recognition.

A substantial amount of evidence has been collected to propose an exclusive role for the dorsal visual pathway in the control of guided visual search mechanisms, specifically in the preattentive direction of spatial selection [Vidyasagar, T. Multimodal Sensory-Spatial Integration and Retrieval of Trained Motor Patterns for Body Coordination in Musicians and Dancers.

Dancers and musicians are experts in spatial and temporal processing, which allows them to coordinate movement with music. This high-level processing has been associated with structural and functional adaptation of the brain for high performance sensorimotor integration. For these integration processes, adaptation does not only take place in primary and secondary sensory and motor areas but also in tertiary brain areas, such as the lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), providing vital resources for highly specialized performance. Here, we review evidence for the

Cortical areas involved in numerical processing: an intraoperative electrostimulation study.

BACKGROUND: Numerical processing is important in our everyday lives. However, very few attempts have been made to map the numerical processing function areas during lesion surgery. OBJECTIVE: To identify and protect the cortical areas involved in numerical processing, the authors used the intraoperative brain mapping approach to study numerical processing areas in patients with parietal lobe tumors. METHODS: During resection in patients with parietal lobe tumors, local anesthesia was administered and numerical processing mapping was performed. Our mapping procedures were conducted before gli

Auditory Spatial Coding Flexibly Recruits Anterior, but Not Posterior, Visuotopic Parietal Cortex.

Audition and vision both convey spatial information about the environment, but much less is known about mechanisms of auditory spatial cognition than visual spatial cognition. Human cortex contains >20 visuospatial map representations but no reported auditory spatial maps. The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) contains several of these visuospatial maps, which support visuospatial attention and short-term memory (STM). Neuroimaging studies also demonstrate that parietal cortex is activated during auditory spatial attention and working memory tasks, but prior work has not demonstrated that auditory ac

A colour-dependent abnormality in human visual detection of stimulus motion and spatial structure.

We have studied the wavelength dependence of visual responses in a single human subject, M.W., who has an unusual visual defect. It is shown that for red stimuli, both spatial resolution for grating patterns and detection of target movement are grossly abnormal. On the basis of these and other [8] experimental data, we argue that M.W.'s response pattern implies interdependent central visual processing of colour, movement and spatial structure. We examine this conclusion in relation to recent anatomical and electrophysiological findings.

Wavelet-based visual compass.

For many ant species, successful visual navigation is crucial for the survival of the individual and the colony, meaning these small-brained insects have evolved to be exceptional navigators. This makes them an ideal inspiration for biomimetic robotics research. Visual compass-style snapshot models have been used to model visual navigation in ants and have been applied to visual teach-and-repeat style robot navigation. In these models, images or 'snapshots' stored when the ant first travels a route are compared to views experienced when recapitulating the route to derive a bearing that will di

Object-in-place Memory Predicted by Anterolateral Entorhinal Cortex and Parahippocampal Cortex Volume in Older Adults.

The lateral portion of the entorhinal cortex is one of the first brain regions affected by tau pathology, an important biomarker for Alzheimer disease. Improving our understanding of this region's cognitive role may help identify better cognitive tests for early detection of Alzheimer disease. Based on its functional connections, we tested the idea that the human anterolateral entorhinal cortex (alERC) may play a role in integrating spatial information into object representations. We recently demonstrated that the volume of the alERC was related to processing the spatial relationships of the f

Toward a spatiotemporal neurocognitive framework of manipulable object processing.

The neural processing of small handheld manipulable objects (henceforth tools) involves a series of brain regions that have been well characterized over the last decades, both anatomically and functionally. But neural processing unfolds over time, requiring the static spatial descriptions that emerged from this research to be accompanied by temporal dynamics between the nodes of the tool network. Temporally-resolved techniques (such as M/EEG) are critical in this endeavor. Yet, to date, studies using such techniques have not been integrated with this spatial depiction. We analyzed M/EEG tempor

Spatiotemporal Neural Network for Sublexical Information Processing: An Intracranial SEEG Study.

Words offer a unique opportunity to separate the processing mechanisms of object subcomponents from those of the whole object, because the phonological or semantic information provided by the word subcomponents (i.e., sublexical information) can conflict with that provided by the whole word (i.e., lexical information). Previous studies have revealed some of the specific brain regions and temporal information involved in sublexical information processing. However, a comprehensive spatiotemporal neural network for sublexical processing remains to be fully elucidated due to the low temporal or sp

Featural versus configural face processing in a rare genetic disorder: Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Williams syndrome (WMS) is a rare genetic disorder with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 20 000 live births. Among other characteristics, WMS has a distinctive cognitive profile with spared face processing and language skills that contrasts with impairment in the cognitive domains of spatial cognition, problem solving and planning. It remains unclear whether individuals with WMS process faces using a featural strategy that focuses on features or a configural strategy that takes into consideration the contour of a face and spatial relations between features. METHODS: To investigate

Single and population coding of taste in the gustatory cortex of awake mice.

Electrophysiological analysis has revealed much about the broad coding and neural ensemble dynamics that characterize gustatory cortical (GC) taste processing in awake rats and about how these dynamics relate to behavior. With regard to mice, however, data concerning cortical taste coding have largely been restricted to imaging, a technique that reveals average levels of neural responsiveness but that (currently) lacks the temporal sensitivity necessary for evaluation of fast response dynamics; furthermore, the few extant studies have thus far failed to provide consensus on basic features of c

Geostatistical modeling of positive-definite matrices: An application to diffusion tensor imaging.

Geostatistical modeling for continuous point-referenced data has extensively been applied to neuroimaging because it produces efficient and valid statistical inference. However, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), a neuroimaging technique characterizing the brain's anatomical structure, produces a positive-definite (p.d.) matrix for each voxel. Currently, only a few geostatistical models for p.d. matrices have been proposed because introducing spatial dependence among p.d. matrices properly is challenging. In this paper, we use the spatial Wishart process, a spatial stochastic process (random fiel

Processing of bilateral versus unilateral conditions: evidence for the functional contribution of the ventral attention network.

Processing of multiple or bilateral conditions presented simultaneously in both hemifields reflects the natural mode of perception in our multi-target environment, but is not yet completely understood. While region-of-interest based studies in healthy subjects reported single cortical areas as the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL) or temporoparietal junction (TPJ) to process bilateral conditions, studies in extinction patients with reduced ability in this regard suggested the right superior temporal cortex to hold a key role. The present fMRI study on healthy subjects aimed at resolving these

Task-dependent modulation of neglect dyslexia? Novel evidence from the viewing position effect.

Spatial neglect may involve neglect dyslexia resulting in a failure to identify words or parts of words in the contralesional hemispace. The present study explored a well-documented dissociation in neglect dyslexics' word processing, i.e. impaired reading aloud in the presence of good lexical decision performance for the same stimuli. To investigate whether this dissociation is also reflected in the visuo-spatial characteristics of word processing, a well-established paradigm of word processing in normal readers (technique of variable viewing positions, [Nazir, T., Heller, D., Sussmann, C., 19

Insight into the precuneus: a novel seizure semiology in a child with epilepsy arising from the right posterior precuneus.

To date, there is limited understanding of the role of the precuneus. fMRI studies have suggested its involvement in a wide spectrum of highly integrated tasks, including spatially-guided behaviour, visuo-spatial imagery, and consciousness. We present a patient with intractable parietal lobe epilepsy arising from a lesion localized to the right precuneus. Two seizure types with distinct semiologies were captured on video-EEG monitoring. The first type consisted of an urge described as a "feeling of wanting to move". On video analysis, the patient is seen to turn his head and body to his left.

Eye-hand preference dissociation in obsessive-compulsive disorder and dyslexia.

Dyslexia may be a development disturbance in which there are alterations in visual-spatial and visual-motor processing, while obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disease in which there are alterations in memory, executive function, and visual-spatial processing. Our hypothesis is that these disturbances may be, at least partially, the result of a crossed eye and hand preference. In the present study 16 controls, 20 OCD (DSM-IV criteria) and 13 dyslexic adults (Brazilian Dyslexia Association criteria) were included. All had a neurological examination, the Yale-Brown scale for o

Role of Inferior Frontal Junction (IFJ) in the Control of Feature versus Spatial Attention.

Feature-based visual attention refers to preferential selection and processing of visual stimuli based on their nonspatial attributes, such as color or shape. Recent studies have highlighted the inferior frontal junction (IFJ) as a control region for feature but not spatial attention. However, the extent to which IFJ contributes to spatial versus feature attention control remains a topic of debate. We investigated in humans of both sexes the role of IFJ in the control of feature versus spatial attention in a cued visual spatial (attend-left or attend-right) and feature (attend-red or attend-gr

OBJECTIVE: To investigate neural mechanisms underlying speech-in-speech listening in adolescents with listening difficulties (LiD). METHODS: Neural speech tracking (NST) was assessed using magnetoencephalography (MEG; 275 sensors) in 21 adolescents with LiD (11 females), identified by caregiver report, and 25 typically developing (TD) peers (10 females), all with normal audiograms and frequency-matched on age, sex, race, and ethnicity. Participants completed a cocktail-party task with target speech alone and with competing streams that varied in talker and spatial cues. NST was quantified usi
