In vitro susceptibility of Mycoplasma iowae isolates to antimicrobial agents.

ABSTRACTMycoplasma iowae, a potential re-emerging avian pathogen mainly affecting turkeys, has been reported from many parts of the world. Poor hatchability, embryonic death, joint and skeletal abnormalities, poor ossification, runting-stunting, poor feathering and airsacculitis may be observed in infected flocks. The reduction of the severity of clinical signs and short-term control of M. iowae are performed by antibiotic treatment. However, M. iowae develops resistance more rapidly and is considered to be more resistant to antimicrobials than other avian pathogenic mycoplasmas. The aim of th

National post-market surveillance assessment of veterinary medicines in Korea during the past decade.

BACKGROUND: Veterinary medicines have been widely used for the prevention and treatment of diseases, growth promotion, and to promote feeding efficacy in livestock. As the veterinary medicine industry has steadily grown, it is crucial to set up a baseline for the quality of medicine as well as the insufficiency or excessiveness of the active ingredients in drug products to ensure the compliance, safety and efficacy of these medicines. Thus, the 10 years data of post-marketing quality control study was summarized to determine the rate and extent of non-compliance of these medicines and to estab

Prenatal treatment for serious neurological sequelae of congenital toxoplasmosis: an observational prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of prenatal treatment to prevent serious neurological sequelae (SNSD) of congenital toxoplasmosis is not known. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Congenital toxoplasmosis was prospectively identified by universal prenatal or neonatal screening in 14 European centres and children were followed for a median of 4 years. We evaluated determinants of postnatal death or SNSD defined by one or more of functional neurological abnormalities, severe bilateral visual impairment, or pregnancy termination for confirmed congenital toxoplasmosis. Two-thirds of the cohort received prenatal

Diagnostic problems and postnatal follow-up in congenital toxoplasmosis.

AIM: In order to assess the consequences of different clinical approaches in the prenatal management of congenital toxoplasmosis, we retrospectively reviewed 58 pregnant women with Toxoplasma seroconversion and prospectively enrolled their 59 infants, referred to us from 1999 to 2004. METHODS: Data on clinical, laboratory and demographic characteristics of the pregnant women were collected. Their children were entered into a 48-month follow-up programme in which clinical, instrumental, ophthalmologic and serologic evaluations were carried out at birth, at 1, 3, 6, 9, 15, 18, 24, 36 and at 48

VIDAS test for avidity of Toxoplasma-specific immunoglobulin G for confirmatory testing of pregnant women.

Because congenital toxoplasmosis is almost solely the result of maternal infection acquired during gestation, it is critical to determine whether infection during pregnancy has occurred. In the United States, definitive diagnosis of the acute infection and the time of its occurrence have been compromised by a lack of systematic screening and the fact that only a single serum sample is submitted for testing. In studies in Europe, and depending on the method used, the demonstration of high-avidity immunoglobulin G (IgG) toxoplasma antibodies has been shown to exclude infection having occurred in

Treatment and results of chronic toxoplasmosis. Analysis of 33 cases.

Women who grew up in Turkey, where undercooked meat is part of the usual diet, have an increased risk of toxoplasmosis. This study covers treatment and prognosis of 33 cases with chronic toxoplasmosis. The study group was selected among the patients with a history of repeated abortions, recurrent preterm labor, stillbirths and babies with congenital anomaly after all other causative reasons were ruled out. IgG and IgM antibody titers were detected by Sabin-Feldman's dye test and indirect fluorescence antibody test. 33 patients, who had negative IgM and IgG antibody titers above 1/64, were acce

Toxoplasmosis in pregnancy; analysis of maternal seropositivity in a large cohort in Turkey and clinical consequences of neonates.

Toxoplasmosis infestation during pregnancy is typically asymptomatic however, the risk of vertical transmission increases with advancing gestational age. Due to the absence of overt clinical symptoms in most pregnant women, diagnosis relies on serological testing. Seroprevalence rates vary widely depending on geographical location and cultural practices. In the fetus, toxoplasmosis can result in a spectrum of outcomes, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe neurological impairment. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii during pregnancy and to evaluate fet

Metabolomics Approach to Explore Bioactive Natural Products Derived From Plant-Root-Associated Streptomyces.

Streptomyces, a prominent genus within the Actinomycetota phylum, is responsible for over 60% of clinically relevant antibiotics. Streptomyces strains inhabiting plant roots possess the potential to synthesize bioactive natural products, conferring defense and resilience to plants against pathogenic microorganisms. However, this potential remains largely unexplored. This study aims to screen for bioactive metabolites produced by Streptomyces strains in the plant rhizosphere.Six Streptomyces isolates were cultivated using three modified media to induce the production of diverse metabolites, emp

Discontinuation of total parenteral nutrition in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: a Canadian perspective.

Provision of nourishment to terminally ill patients has been a controversial topic in clinical medicine. Determination of the limits of palliative care requires an understanding of the disease process, as well as the boundaries of patient self-determination. With the advent of living wills, the determination of the patient to limit care, including nutrition support, has become socially acceptable. Difficulties arise when there are differences of opinion between the caregiver and the patient. The solutions to these conflicts are often decided in the courtroom, as demonstrated by the Cruzan and

[Medullary aplasia during treatment for congenital toxoplasmosis in a twin pregnancy].

The authors report a case of a patient who in the 24th week of a twin pregnancy became sero-positive for toxoplasmosis. This was diagnosed by cordocentesis as being infected, and the treatment was therefore started with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine and folic acid at the 28th week of pregnancy. At 35 weeks, the patient had an acute medullary aplasia due to the absence of the folates. The mother's state was improved rapidly by giving her folinic acid and the twins were normal haematologically. In this case, the authors point out how important the folates are in a pregnancy, especially in twin

Recycling of neomycin fermentation residue using SEA-CBS technology: Growth performance and antibiotic resistance genes.

Antibiotic fermentation residue (AFR) is a form of bioavailable matter, that represents a typical category of hazardous waste associated with drug production in China. The disposal of these residues seriously restricts the sustainable development of the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, the steam explosion and aerobic composting (SEA-CBS) system was developed to thoroughly convert neomycin fermentation residue to organic fertilizer. The results implied that the ultimate removal rate of antibiotics was as high as 99.9% in all cases, including macrolide (kitasamycin and spiramycin), lincos

Therapeutic and antioxidant potential of bionanofactory Ochrobactrum sp.-mediated magnetite and zerovalent iron nanoparticles against acute experimental toxoplasmosis.

The control of toxoplasmosis, a rampant one health disease, has been focussed on conventional antitoxoplasmic agents with their adverse outcomes, including serious side effects, treatment failure and emergence of drug resistant strains. Nanobiotechnology may provide a strong impetus for versatile alternative therapies against toxoplasmosis. Bionanofactory Ochrobactrum sp. strain CNE2 was recruited for the biosynthesis of functionalized magnetite iron nanoparticles (MNPs) and nanozerovalent iron (nZVI) under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and their therapeutic efficacy was evaluated against a

Effects of therapy with two combinations of antibiotics on the imbalance of MMP-2÷TIMP-2 in chronic periodontitis.

UNLABELLED: Periodontitis represents a chronic bacterial infection that induces immuno-inflammatory conditions affecting gingiva and tooth-supporting tissues. The role of some biological mediators in periodontal disease was widely investigated, especially that of MMP-8 and MMP-9. Recently, MMP-2 was also considered to be an appropriate therapeutic target for prevention of periodontal disease progression. However, effects of the combination of metronidazole with amoxicillin or spiramycin on the release and activation of MMP-2 and the balance MMP-2÷TIMP-2 were rarely studied. This study was desi

Pharmacokinetic interactions between theophylline and other medication (Part I).

Many drugs have been found to increase or decrease the clearance of theophylline, probably by interaction with one or more of the variants of the cytochrome P450 drug-metabolising system. Theophylline may be particularly susceptible to alteration of its clearance because of the particular form(s) of the P450 system involved, because its metabolism is saturable, and/or because 90% of its elimination is via metabolism. Its clearance has been found to be decreased (typically by around 25%, but often by far more) by erythromycin, troleandomycin (triacetyloleandomycin), roxithromycin, enoxacin, cip

[Congenital toxoplasmosis: prevention in the pregnant woman and management of the neonate].

The management of a pregnant women or a child infected by Toxoplasma gondii rests on the screening of pregnant women at risk of infection. Treatment is prescribed if an infection occurs. A prenatal diagnosis (detection of T. gondii in amniotic fluid) may be performed, a positive result leading to a reinforcement of the treatment. After birth, the follow-up of the child is needed in order to prevent and detect the sequellae, mainly ocular. For all these steps, the biological methods used to diagnose T. gondii infection are of paramount importance.
