Machine learning in time-lapse imaging to differentiate embryos from young vs old mice†.

Time-lapse microscopy for embryos is a non-invasive technology used to characterize early embryo development. This study employs time-lapse microscopy and machine learning to elucidate changes in embryonic growth kinetics with maternal aging. We analyzed morphokinetic parameters of embryos from young and aged C57BL6/NJ mice via continuous imaging. Our findings show that aged embryos accelerated through cleavage stages (from 5-cells) to morula compared to younger counterparts, with no significant differences observed in later stages of blastulation. Unsupervised machine learning identified two

Machine learning algorithms for the prognostication of abdominal aortic aneurysm progression: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), often characterized by an abdominal aortic diameter over 3.0 cm, is managed through screening, surveillance, and surgical intervention. AAA growth can be heterogeneous and rupture carries a high mortality rate, with size and certain risk factors influencing rupture risk. Research is ongoing to accurately predict individual AAA growth rates for personalized management. Machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, has shown promise in various medical fields, including endoleak detection post-EVAR. However, its application for predicting AA

Spectroscopic and machine learning approaches for clinical subtyping in systemic sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis, vascular damage, and immune dysregulation. In this study, we evaluated the potential of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of whole blood samples combined with multivariate and machine learning approaches to differentiate between disease subtypes and the presence of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Subtle but consistent spectral differences were observed in the amide I/II and lipid-associated regions (~ 1500-1700 cm-1 and ~ 2900 cm-1). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed clear clusteri

Graphdiyne-assisted LDI-MS for rapid, non-invasive urine metabolomic profiling in tuberculosis screening.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health burden. Here we report a rapid, noninvasive urine-based metabolomics approach using graphdiyne (GD)-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) combined with machine learning. We applied GD-assisted LDI-TOF MS to urine samples from healthy controls (HC) and active TB patients, generating rich metabolite fingerprints. Supervised classifiers trained on the GD-assisted LDI-TOF MS spectral features achieved excellent discrimination, consistent with previous reports of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time-of-Flight Mass

Prognosis Forecast of Re-Irradiation for Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Based on Deep Learning Multi-Modal Information Fusion.

Radiation therapy is the primary treatment for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, it may induce necrosis of the nasopharynx, leading to severe complications such as bleeding and headache. Therefore, forecasting necrosis of the nasopharynx and initiating timely clinical intervention has important implications for reducing complications caused by re-irradiation. This research informs clinical decision-making by making predictions on re-irradiation of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma using deep learning multi-modal information fusion between multi-sequence nuclear magnetic resonance i

Building and Evaluating an Orthodontic Natural Language Processing Model for Automated Clinical Note Information Extraction.

INTRODUCTION: Malocclusion presents functional and aesthetic challenges, necessitating accurate diagnosis and treatment. However, variability in orthodontic treatment planning persists due to subjective assessments, limiting consistency and objectivity. Electronic dental records (EDRs) contain vast patient data that could address these challenges, but much of the rich clinical information is documented as free text, complicating analysis. This study aims to develop an Orthodontic Natural Language Processing (ONLP) model to extract structured orthodontics-related information from unstructured E

Role of caspase-3/E-cadherin in helicobacter pylori-induced apoptosis of gastric epithelial cells.

OBJECTIVE: Early detection of knee osteoarthritis is crucial for improving patient outcomes. While conventional imaging methods often fail to detect early changes and require specialized expertise for interpretation, this study aimed to investigate the use of frontal plane kinematic data during step-up (SU) and step-down (SD) tests to classify and predict early osteoarthritis (EOA) using machine-learning techniques. METHODS: Forty-three recreational table tennis players (eighty-six legs: 42 with EOA and 44 without EOA) underwent SU and SD tests. Frontal plane kinematics was analyzed using two

Illuminating the Path to Enhanced Resilience of Machine Learning Models Against the Shadows of Missing Labels.

The sensitivity of state-of-the-art supervised classification models is compromised by contamination-prone biomedical datasets, which are vulnerable to the presence of missing or erroneous labels (i.e., inliers). Starting from codon frequencies, electrocardiogram signals, biomarkers, morphological features, and patient questionnaires, we attempted to cover a wide range of typical biomedical databases exposed to the risk of missing data labeled as negative values (inlier contamination). In some very niche fields, such as image recognition, missing labels have received a lot of attention, but in

Methodological illustration using machine learning methods to predict cancer-related fatigue in cancer patients.

Supervised machine learning is a popular tool for predictor selection in large data sets. The choice of method is currently either based on theory, subjective preferences, previous general simulation studies, or the best fit of a method to the data, which does not allow evaluating the methods' performance for a specific empirical application. In this article, we illustrate how to select a method through a simulation study tailored to an empirical application. The simulation study mimics cancer data with the aim of predicting patients' quality of life. We vary sample sizes, effect sizes, correl

Hybrid Feature Learning for Wearable Stress Detection: Combining Domain Knowledge with Supervised Deep Learning.

Accurate stress monitoring is critical for high-risk professions like firefighting, yet existing wearable solutions face challenges balancing accuracy with practical usability. While electrodermal activity (EDA) offers a non-invasive, single-sensor approach, current automated feature extraction methods fail to capture stress-discriminative patterns effectively. We developed a hybrid stress detection pipeline combining 20 hand-crafted physiological features with 32 deep-learned features from a supervised convolutional autoencoder. Unlike traditional unsupervised approaches optimized solely for

A multi-stage training and deep supervision based segmentation approach for 3D abdominal multi-organ segmentation.

Accurate X-ray Computed tomography (CT) image segmentation of the abdominal organs is fundamental for diagnosing abdominal diseases, planning cancer treatment, and formulating radiotherapy strategies. However, the existing deep learning based models for three-dimensional (3D) CT image abdominal multi-organ segmentation face challenges, including complex organ distribution, scarcity of labeled data, and diversity of organ structures, leading to difficulties in model training and convergence and low segmentation accuracy. To address these issues, a novel multi-stage training and a deep supervisi

Classification of breast cancer histopathology images using a modified supervised contrastive learning method.

Deep neural networks have reached remarkable achievements in medical image processing tasks, specifically in classifying and detecting various diseases. However, when confronted with limited data, these networks face a critical vulnerability, often succumbing to overfitting by excessively memorizing the limited information available. This work addresses the challenge mentioned above by improving the supervised contrastive learning method leveraging both image-level labels and domain-specific augmentations to enhance model robustness. This approach integrates self-supervised pre-training with a

A Comprehensive Framework for Uncertainty Quantification of Voxel-Wise Supervised Deep Learning Models in IVIM MRI.

Accurate estimation of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) parameters from diffusion-weighted MRI remains challenging due to the ill-posed nature of the inverse problem and high sensitivity to noise, particularly in the perfusion compartment. In this work, we propose a probabilistic deep learning framework based on deep ensembles (DEs) of mixture density networks (MDNs), enabling estimation of total predictive uncertainty and decomposition into aleatoric (AU) and epistemic (EU) components. The method was benchmarked against nonprobabilistic neural networks, a Bayesian fitting approach, and a p

Semi-supervised deep learning for uterus and bladder segmentation on female pelvic floor magnetic resonance imaging with limited labeled data.

BACKGROUND: Accurately outlining ("segmenting") pelvic organs from magnetic resonance imaging scans is crucial for studying pelvic organ prolapse. The labor-intensive process of segmentation that identifies which pixels correspond to a particular organ in magnetic resonance imaging datasets imposes a substantial bottleneck on training artificial intelligence to do automated segmentation techniques, underscoring a need for methods that can operate effectively with minimal prelabeled data. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to introduce a novel semi-supervised learning process that uses limite

Joint self-supervised and supervised contrastive learning for multimodal MRI data: Towards predicting abnormal neurodevelopment.

The integration of different imaging modalities, such as structural, diffusion tensor, and functional magnetic resonance imaging, with deep learning models has yielded promising outcomes in discerning phenotypic characteristics and enhancing disease diagnosis. The development of such a technique hinges on the efficient fusion of heterogeneous multimodal features, which initially reside within distinct representation spaces. Naively fusing the multimodal features does not adequately capture the complementary information and could even produce redundancy. In this work, we present a novel joint s

Automatic detection and diagnosis of sacroiliitis in CT scans as incidental findings.

Early diagnosis of sacroiliitis may lead to preventive treatment which can significantly improve the patient's quality of life in the long run. Oftentimes, a CT scan of the lower back or abdomen is acquired for suspected back pain. However, since the differences between a healthy and an inflamed sacroiliac joint in the early stages are subtle, the condition may be missed. We have developed a new automatic algorithm for the diagnosis and grading of sacroiliitis CT scans as incidental findings, for patients who underwent CT scanning as part of their lower back pain workout. The method is based o
