Tumoral lesions of the temporal bone include benign or malignant tumors and congenital or inflammatory lesions. Temporal bone lesions are difficult to approach. Therefore, making a preoperative diagnosis and considering whether the lesions require treatment are necessary; if they require treatment, then the type of treatment requires consideration. These tumors cannot be observed directly and must be diagnosed based on symptoms and imaging findings. However, the differentiation of temporal bone lesions is difficult because they are rare and large in variety. In this pictorial review, we divide

BACKGROUND: Metastatic disease to the temporal bone is rare. Even more uncommonly, it can be the first manifestation of an underlying malignancy. Patients typically present late in the disease process with non-specific symptoms of hearing loss, facial nerve palsy and otorrhea.
CASE: A 62-year-old Chinese female presented with right facial weakness, which had near-complete improvement in response to pulse prednisolone. On examination, she had a right temporal swelling and right mild-severe conductive hearing loss. A computed tomography scan showed a destructive lesion centred in the squamous t

Unicoronal craniosynostosis correction with fronto-orbital advancement and cranial vault remodeling has traditionally been the gold standard. Distraction osteogenesis has the advantage of increased size of movement without constriction of the scalp and decreased morbidity. Although fronto-orbital advancement and cranial vault remodeling are usually performed at 6 months of age or later, distraction osteogenesis is performed at a younger age, between 3 and 6 months, to take advantage of the infant bony physiology. Herein, the authors demonstrate a case of distraction osteogenesis for unicoronal

We report a case of a temporal bone pneumatocele with full-thickness erosion of the cranium associated with aggressive nose blowing. This condition presented 9 years after traumatic fracture of the temporal bone. There are 17 reported cases of mastoid sinus hyperpneumatisation in the literature. Eleven of the 17 are associated with Valsalva manoeuvres or elevated middle ear pressure. However, no other cases of full-thickness erosion at the site of a former fracture have been reported. We propose that the fracture, in combination with elevated mastoid sinus pressure from aggressive nose blowing

Benign fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial region are a diverse group of entities with overlapping histologic characteristics. One of these fibro-osseous lesions is ossifying fibroma and it is seen rarely in the head and neck region. Only a few cases of temporal bone involvement were reported in the literature. Patients with ossifying fibroma located in the temporal bone may have the following complaints: conductive hearing loss, swelling, localized pain, headache, and ear discharge. The lesion should be removed surgically and obtaining negative surgical margins is crucial to prevent any

Giant cell rich lesions of the temporal bone encompass a wide spectrum of disease that includes infectious, reactive, and neoplastic processes. When dealing with any lesion that can potentially involve bone, it is important to understand both the clinical presentation and to correlate the histologic findings with the radiologic imaging. This review discusses the clinical, the pathologic features including the differential diagnosis, and the treatment of some of the more commonly encountered giant cell rich entities in this region.

Objectives To describe a technique for harvesting larger temporal bone specimens from human cadavers for the training of otolaryngology residents and fellows on the various approaches to the lateral and posterolateral skull base. Design Human cadaveric anatomical study. The calvarium was excised 6 cm above the superior aspect of the ear canal. The brain and cerebellum were carefully removed, and the cranial nerves were cut sharply. Two bony cuts were performed, one in the midsagittal plane and the other in the coronal plane at the level of the optic foramen. Setting Medical school anatomy labo

Temporal bone absorption is a very infrequent complication following a intraoral mandibular distraction. We present a case of severe temporal bone absorption with skull base bone destruction in a child who experienced the mandibular distraction operation. In her follow-up of the 6th month, it was observed that the implanted distraction device drilled to the temporal bone and stretch into the middle cranial fossa. We recommend to optimize the positioning of the osteotomy and the design of the distraction to avoid the otential risk of adjacent skull destruction.

HYPOTHESIS: The histopathology of Sjogren's syndrome (SS) in the human inner ear correlates with mouse models of autoimmune inner ear disease.
BACKGROUND: SS is an autoimmune disease in which 25% of patients have sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The inner ear histology in a SS mouse model has shown degeneration of the stria vascularis (SV) and immunoglobulin G deposition on the basement membrane of SV blood vessels. Correlation with human temporal bone histopathology has not been addressed.
METHODS: The histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the inner ear in 4 patients with SS is descr

HYPOTHESIS: Endolymphatic hydrops in temporal bones with otologic syphilis directly relates to osteitis, new bone formation, and/or resorption along the course of the endolymphatic system.
BACKGROUND: Ménière's disease and otosyphilis both cause progressive endolymphatic hydrops, and the mechanism of hydrops formation in each disease process remains unclear. Traditionally, osteitic changes of the labyrinthine capsule were thought to lead to endolymphatic hydrops in syphilitic temporal bones. More recently, authors have suggested that microgummata and inflammatory change obliterating the endol

We report the case of a 41-year-old man who presented with progressive right-sided ear pressure, otalgia, hearing loss, tinnitus, and intermittent otorrhea. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging detected a soft-tissue mass in the right mastoid with intracranial invasion and erosion through the tegmen tympani and mastoid cortex. Histopathologic examination was consistent with an inflammatory pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma). These lesions rarely occur in the temporal bone. When they do, they are locally destructive and can erode bone and soft tissues. Aggressive surgery is recom
