Working memory in skilled and less skilled readers.

This study assessed skilled and less skilled readers' working memory performance. Fifty skilled and less skilled readers at two age levels were presented with sentence span and concurrent memory tasks. The span task results indicated that working memory differences exist between reading groups. The concurrent task revealed performance deficits for less skilled readers across verbal and nonverbal conditions, suggesting a central processing deficiency. Age differences were isolated to skilled readers. It was concluded that less skilled readers' working memory deficiencies were pervasive in the s

Using stimulus shaping and fading to establish stimulus control in normal and retarded children.

The present study was an effort to investigate whether, in addition to his IQ level, the child's ability to identify all relevant stimulus components would affect the frequency of overselective responding. Children of different IQ levels (i.e. normal, educably retarded, and trainable retarded children) participated. Subjects were trained to learn the meanings of four sets of fictitious words, i.e. two sets containing words printed in Roman letters (Roman words), and two sets containing words printed in Hebrew letters (Hebrew words). All subjects could identify the words of each set. The normal

Acquisition of matching - to - sample performances in severe retardation: learning by exclusion.

Immediate discriminative control by spoken words was examined in a profoundly retarded, mute young man. The subject learned to select food items from a two-choice display when the food names were spoken, in a matching-to-sample format. Then a new food was presented as one choice, and a novel name was the sample. The subject selected the new food in response to the first presentation of the novel name. It appeared that the subject rejected or "excluded" the trained food which was the other alternative. This "exclusion" performance was obtained errorlessly with fourteen of sixteen new foods and

Training a Neural Network for Vocal Stereotypy Detection.

This system was developed to detect and diagnose vocal stereotypies made by non-verbal autistic children. Vocal stereotypies are loud non-speech vocalizations made by these children. The system discussed in this paper uses a deep learning neural network to detect these vocalizations. Using similar data from other recorded human voices, the system can be trained to detect the non-speech vocalizations of autistic children. By detecting vocalizations the proposed system can be used to recognize the stimming of non-verbal autistic children from the background noise.

Contributions from specific and general factors to unique deficits: two cases of mathematics learning difficulties.

Mathematics learning difficulties are a highly comorbid and heterogeneous set of disorders linked to several dissociable mechanisms and endophenotypes. Two of these endophenotypes consist of primary deficits in number sense and verbal numerical representations. However, currently acknowledged endophenotypes are underspecified regarding the role of automatic vs. controlled information processing, and their description should be complemented. Two children with specific deficits in number sense and verbal numerical representations and normal or above-normal intelligence and preserved visuospatial

Memory patterns of acquisition and retention of verbal and nonverbal information in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Previous research indicates that children with FASD have both memory and learning deficits. However, there is no consensus about whether the deficits identified from a pattern of impairment, and whether this pattern is consistent with the current theories regarding the organization of memory. Thus, the goal of this study was to further explore memory functions and expose possible patterns that may exist in children with FASD. METHODS: The Children's Memory Scale (CMS) was used to measure visual and verbal memory, as well as learning and encoding, among 30 children with FASD (ages

Vascular comorbidity is associated with decreased cognitive functioning in inflammatory bowel disease.

Reports of cognitive impairment in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been mixed. IBD and cardiovascular disease are often co-morbid, yet it remains unknown whether vascular comorbidity confers a risk for decreased cognitive functioning, as observed in other populations. Participants with IBD were recruited from a longitudinal study of immune-mediated disease. Participants were administered a standardized neuropsychological test protocol, evaluating information processing speed, verbal learning and memory, visual learning and memory, and verbal fluency/executive function. Cognitive test sco…

Effect of estradiol on cognition in men undergoing androgen deprivation therapy: A randomized placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Roles for estradiol in modulating cognition in men remain uncertain. We assessed the isolated effects of estradiol on cognition in men in the absence of testosterone. DESIGN: Randomized trial of transdermal estradiol 0.9 mg daily, or matched placebo, for 6 months, hypothesizing that estradiol would improve verbal learning, verbal memory, and spatial problem solving over time. PATIENTS: Men receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer. MEASUREMENTS: Cognition was assessed by a tablet-based cognitive battery (Cogstate) at baseline, Month 1, Month 3, and Month 6.…

Effects of menstrual cycle phase and oral contraceptive use on verbal memory.

Surgical or pharmacological suppression of ovarian hormones leads to declines in verbal memory, and estrogen treatment reverses these deficits. In the current study, we investigated the effects of menstrual cycle phase and oral contraceptives on verbal memory, as measured by the California Verbal Learning Test, in two groups of premenopausal women - 16 naturally cycling women and 20 current users of estrogen-based oral contraceptives (OCs). Naturally cycling women were assessed twice - once during the early follicular phase (Days 2-4) and once during the midluteal phase (Days 20-22) of the men…

Instruction on Piagetian concepts for children with mental retardation.

Eighteen children with mild mental retardation were pretested on unidimensional classification (oddity), unidimensional seriation, number conservation, Slosson's Intelligence Test, and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT). The children were instructed on the Piagetian concepts twice per week for 4 months via a learning-set technique. All 315 problems (except 20 verbal classification and 15 verbal seriation items) involved concrete items. When posttested at the semester's end, the children had, with few exceptions, mastered the Piagetian concepts and made significant gains on performance

Gaze crossing: a new paradigm to assess social contingency and word learning during real-time infant-adult interactions.

Children's social interactions with caregivers play a crucial role in their development. One strong cue to an ongoing social interaction is the mutual dependency of interaction partners' behaviours, a feature we refer to as social contingency. Socially contingent interactions have been shown to support learning, but it remains underexplored whether social contingency alone, even in the absence of other social cues, can drive developmental advantages. Addressing this question requires faithfully representing bi-directional contingency in infant-adult interactions while isolating it from other s

No Evidence for Curiosity-Driven Information Selection Advantage in Infants' Novel Word Learning.

The cognitive mechanisms and benefits of active learning in early child development are poorly understood. The current study investigated 20-23-month-old infants' curiosity-driven information selection in a novel word learning task, designed to identify any potential advantage for active learning over passive learning. In a gaze-contingent eye-tracking paradigm, infants in one condition were given the opportunity to structure their own information seeking to actively create word learning opportunities for themselves, while infants in two other conditions engaged in learning novel words passive

Effect of Speech-Shaped Noise on Pseudoword Learning in Young Adults.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of background speech-shaped noise (SSN) on novel word learning. We asked whether training outcomes differ when pseudowords are learned in Quiet, +10 dB SNR, or 0 dB SNR conditions. METHOD: Sixty young adults (ages 18-30 years) completed a 5-day training paradigm in which novel pseudowords were paired with pictures of familiar objects. Participants were assigned in a counterbalanced manner to one of three listening conditions (Quiet, +10 dB SNR, 0 dB SNR). Recognition accuracy was tested after each daily session. Mixed-effects models evaluated baseline g

English-hearing toddlers learn words from consistent and variable labels.

Early word learning is traditionally characterized as a process of mapping a single label onto a single referent. Yet, across many languages, child-directed speech (CDS) frequently features multiple labels for the same referent, including diminutivized and reduplicated word forms (e.g., doggy or woof-woof for dog). We examined how consistent versus variable labels impact children's novel word learning. In a within-subjects eye-tracking experiment, we exposed 18- to 36-month-old English-hearing children to novel objects that were named with consistent labels, with typical CDS variants, or with

[Possible definitions and subsequent incidence of circumscribed reading and spelling disorders--theoretical considerations and empirical findings in a representative sample of young adults].

OBJECTIVES: With reference to an epidemiological sample of adolescents and young adults the impact of different models on the number of children classified as having specific reading and spelling problems is investigated. METHODS: Using the same set of data, the effects of alternative measurement models, definitions and methodological procedures on the prevalence of specific spelling problems are shown. The virtual consequences of various norm-oriented definitions of cases are discussed with reference to external empirical criteria. RESULTS: In the present study case definitions of specific

Grapheme-phoneme correspondence in dyslexic and matched control readers.

Snowling (1980) reported that dyslexic children appear to have specific deficits in grapheme-phoneme conversion skills. Using a similar methodology, the present study compared the ability of dyslexic and control readers to make phoneme discriminations between the beginnings and ends of words. Recognition of word pairs as same or different were presented in four conditions: visual presentation-visual recognition (V-V), auditory-auditory (A-A), visual-auditory (V-A) and auditory-visual (A-V). It was found that dyslexic readers had particular difficulty with the mixed-mode conditions (V-A, A-V) w
