Persistent Idiopathic Mirror Writing in a Right-Handed Healthy Young Woman: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Mirror writing is unusual handwriting, in which the writing is in the opposite direction to normal, with reversed letters can be effortlessly read using a mirror. Studies reported that the condition can occur temporarily during the normal development of writing skills in children, and can also could occur in children with developmental delays. In adults, it can be acquired after a brain lesion. CASE REPORT A right-handed 19-year-old Saudi woman presented with progressive-onset mirror writing in both hands, and with writing both languages, Arabic and English. The condition was transi

Interventions for Supporting and Assessing Science Writing Communication: Cases of Asian English Language Learners.

In seeking to support diversity, one challenge lies in adequately supporting and assessing science cognitions in a writing-intensive Biochemistry laboratory course when highly engaged Asian English language learners (Asian ELLs) struggle to communicate and make novice errors in English. Because they may understand advanced science concepts, but are not being adequately assessed for their deeper scientific understanding, we sought and examined interventions. We hypothesized that inquiry strategies, scaffolded learning through peer evaluation, and individualized tools that build writing communic

Developmental relationships between speech and writing: is verb-phrase anaphora production a special case?

BACKGROUND: Young children's speech is typically more linguistically sophisticated than their writing. However, there are grounds for asking whether production of cohesive devices, such as verb-phrase anaphora (VPA), might represent an exception to this developmental pattern, as cohesive devices are generally more important in writing than in speech and so might be expected to be more frequent in children's writing than in their speech. AIMS: The study reported herein aims to compare the frequency of children's production of VPA constructions (e.g., Mary is eating an apple and so is John) bet

Expertise with characters in alphabetic and nonalphabetic writing systems engage overlapping occipito-temporal areas.

Parts of the left ventral visual pathway are engaged selectively during the perception of words, letter strings, and even single letters. While studies have shown overlap between activations for letters and characters across writing systems, they adopted group analyses with very limited spatial resolution, or used words and letter strings that have been shown to activate different regions from those activated by single characters. The current study compared activity within individual participants for the perception of single characters from different writing systems. Roman letters, Chinese cha

Processing of semantic radicals in writing Chinese characters: Data from a Chinese dysgraphic patient.

This paper describes a case study of a Chinese brain-injured patient with mild dyslexia and more severe dysgraphia. The distributions of his reading and writing errors across tasks are consistent with previous reports. Semantic errors predominated in naming tasks in both modalities, while the preponderance of LARC or phonologically similar errors in reading and phonologically plausible errors in writing-to-dictation was found. Furthermore, his writing errors showed that the semantic radical could be replaced, omitted, or added, whereas only substitutions or deletions of the phonetic radical we

Direct Laser Writing of Ferromagnetic Nickel Utilizing the Principle of Sensitized Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion.

Direct laser writing of ferromagnetic microstructures is of great interest for sensing and data storage in compact three-dimensional architectures. However, reliable direct laser writing of metallic, and even more so ferromagnetic, materials remains a major challenge. Here, we discuss a developed photoresist suitable to direct laser write ferromagnetic nickel based on sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion. By combining an in situ photochemical deoxygenation process with a sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion process and photoreduction of Ni2+ ions, the deposition

Digital mind mapping tools for B2 tertiary EFL students: An exploration of impacts on writing.

Planning is crucial in academic writing, as it enables students to organize their ideas and use new vocabulary logically. However, many B2-level undergraduate EFL students struggle with coherent organization and lexical diversity in their argumentative essays, which limits writing quality. This research investigates how digital mind-mapping (DMM) tools influence the academic writing of 60 B2-level Saudi EFL undergraduate students at King Faisal University. Using a quasi-experimental design, the participants were divided into an Experimental Group (EG) (n = 34) that used DMM tools (MindMeister

Design and implementation of a writing-stroke motor imagery paradigm for multi-character EEG classification.

Motor imagery (MI) based brain-computer interfaces (BCI) decode neural activity to generate command outputs. However, the limited number of distinguishable commands in traditional MI-BCI systems restricts practical applications. To overcome this limitation, we propose a multi-character classification framework based on Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. A structurally simplified MI paradigm for stroke writing is designed, and maximize Euclidean distance trajectory optimization enhances neural separability among five stroke categories. The EEG data cover 11 motor imagery tasks, including fiv

Increased sensorimotor and superior parietal activation correlate with reduced writing dysfluency in writer's cramp dystonia.

Writer's cramp (WC) dystonia is a disabling brain disorder characterized by abnormal postures during writing tasks. Although abnormalities were identified in the sensorimotor, parietal, basal ganglia, and cerebellum, the network-level interactions between these brain regions and dystonia symptoms are not well understood. This study investigated the relationship between peak accelerations, an objective measure of writing dysfluency, and functional network (FN) activation in WC and healthy volunteers (HVs). Twenty WC and 22 HV performed a writing task using a kinematic software outside an MRI sc

Macromolecular inks of nanocellulose-alginate for direct-ink-writing: Functional scaffolds enriched with curcumin extracts.

We present a scalable platform for the fabrication of multifunctional bioactive materials by integrating, polysaccharide-based matrices, green extraction and additive manufacturing. In this work, bioactive 3D-printed structures were fabricated using inks composed of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), alginate (Alg), and curcumin extracts. Bioactive compounds were efficiently recovered from turmeric via solvent-free supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, yielding up to 6.57 mg/100 g curcuminoids and 232.45 mg/100 g total phenols. The extracts exhibited robust antioxidant activity (DPPH• IC50: 2

Kinaesthetic motor imagery in writer's cramp dystonia reveals writing specific abnormalities in the occipital lobe.

Studies on motor imagery (MI) in writer's cramp (WC) dystonia are limited but may offer insights into impaired motor planning without the influence of dystonic co-contraction. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare executed writing and drawing of circles with kinaesthetic motor imagery in 18 WC patients and 18 healthy controls. Kinematic analysis confirmed the abnormal signature of WC by demonstrating a decreased frequency and an increased number of inversions during writing in WC patients. fMRI showed decreased BOLD activation during MI, with similar regions a

Adsorption film with sub-milli-interface morphologies via direct ink writing for indoor formaldehyde removal.

In-situ thermally regenerated flexible adsorption films are superior for long-term purification of indoor low-concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To further improve the adsorption kinetics of the films, the surface morphology of adsorption films was suggested in hierarchical channel structure. However, such structure is far from practical applications because of its complicated fabrication method and limited flexibility. In this study, we proposed a convenient and fast method named direct ink writing (DIW) based 3D printing to fabricate flexible adsorption films. Inks were prepare

Preparation of high precision multilayer scaffolds based on Melt Electro-Writing to repair cartilage injury.

Rationale: Articular cartilage injury is quite common. However, post-injury cartilage repair is challenging and often requires medical intervention, which can be aided by 3D printed tissue engineering scaffolds. Specifically, the high accuracy of Melt Electro-Writing (MEW) technology facilitates the printing of scaffolds that imitate the structure and composition of natural cartilage to promote repair. Methods: MEW and Inkjet printing technology was employed to manufacture a composite scaffold that was then implanted into a cartilage injury site through microfracture surgery. While printing po

Writing, Reading, and Translating the Clustered Protocadherin Cell Surface Recognition Code for Neural Circuit Assembly.

The ability of neurites of individual neurons to distinguish between themselves and neurites from other neurons and to avoid self (self-avoidance) plays a key role in neural circuit assembly in both invertebrates and vertebrates. Similarly, when individual neurons of the same type project into receptive fields of the brain, they must avoid each other to maximize target coverage (tiling). Counterintuitively, these processes are driven by highly specific homophilic interactions between cell surface proteins that lead to neurite repulsion rather than adhesion. Among these proteins in vertebrates

Treatment of a Patient With Task-Specific Writing Tremor Using Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focused Ultrasound.

Task-specific dystonia is characterized by abnormal repetitive movements or postures in a specific body part that is triggered and ends with a task, such as writing. Failing medications, surgery, specifically disruption of key nuclei in the thalamus, can provide excellent symptomatic relief. Transcranial magnetic resonance (MR)-guided focused ultrasound is an emerging incision-less thermoablation technique. We describe MR-guided focused ultrasound tandem ablation of the ventral intermediate and ventralis oralis posterior nuclei in a 60-year-old patient with writer's cramp. The clinical improve

First-Grade Cognitive Predictors of Writing Disabilities in Grades 2 Through 4 Elementary School Students.

The primary aim of this study was determining Grade 1 cognitive predictors of students at risk for writing disabilities in Grades 2 through 4. Applying cognitive measures selected to align with theoretical and empirical models of writing, tasks were administered to Grade 1 students assessing fine-motor, linguistic, and executive functions: 84 at risk (bottom quartile for age-base expectations) and 54 typically developing. A model with individual predictors was compared to a previously developed latent trait model to determine the relative predictive worth of each approach. Data analysis primar
