Risk and Protective Factors for Self-Harm in a Population-Based Sample of Transgender Youth.

This study sought to identify factors distinguishing transgender/gender non-conforming (GNC) adolescents across three groups: no self-harm, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) only, and NSSI and suicide attempt (NSSI + SA). Data were from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey. The final analytic sample included 1,635 transgender/GNC students in grades 9 and 11. Logistic regression analyses determined factors that best distinguished transgender/GNC students who reported self-harm (NSSI only or NSSI + SA) from those who reported no self-harm, and transgender/GNC adolescents who reported NSSI + SA from t

Acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of caregiver-assisted HIV self-testing among children using an oral mucosal test in Uganda and Zambia: a prospective interventional study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief supported oral caregiver-assisted HIV self-testing (CG-HIVST) to address the gap in HIV diagnosis of children. We aimed to investigate caregiver uptake, results return, acceptability, and potential social harms of CG-HIVST. METHODS: This prospective, interventional, study was done at 32 health facilities in Uganda and 15 health facilities in Zambia. Caregivers aged 18 years and older (plus emancipated minors aged 15-17 years in Uganda) living with HIV who were currently accessing HIV care and considere

Women's empowerment and elective cesarean section for a single pregnancy: a population-based and multivariate study in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Women's empowerment, and maternal and neonatal health are important targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our objective is to examine the relationship between women's empowerment and elective cesarean section (ECS), focusing on Vietnam, a country where the use of CS has increased rapidly in recent decades, which raises public health concerns. METHODS: We hypothesized that in the context of the developing biomedicalization of childbirth, women's empowerment increases the use of ECS due to a woman's enhanced ability to decide her mode of delivery. By using microdata from the

Exploring comorbid depression and physical health trajectories: A case-based computational modelling approach.

While comorbid depression/physical health is a major clinical concern, the conventional methods of medicine make it difficult to model the complexities of this relationship. Such challenges include cataloguing multiple trends, developing multiple complex aetiological explanations, and modelling the collective large-scale dynamics of these trends. Using a case-based complexity approach, this study engaged in a richly described case study to demonstrate the utility of computational modelling for primary care research. N = 259 people were subsampled from the Diamond database, one of the largest p

Meeting the Reproductive Health Needs of Female Key Populations Affected by HIV in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Review of the Evidence.

Female sex workers and other women at high risk of acquiring HIV have the right to sexual and reproductive health, including the right to determine the number and timing of pregnancies. We conducted a literature review to examine the data that exist regarding the family planning and reproductive health needs of female key populations, the underlying determinants of these populations' vulnerability to poor reproductive health outcomes, and the obstacles they face in accessing high-quality reproductive health services. Findings indicate that female key populations experience high rates of unmet

"Life at the River is a Living Hell:" a qualitative study of trauma, mental health, substance use and HIV risk behavior among female fish traders from the Kafue Flatlands in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: In Western settings, the relationship between trauma history, posttraumatic stress disorder, substance use, and HIV risk behavior, is well established. Although female fish traders in Zambia are affected by HIV at rates estimated to be 4-14 times higher than the national prevalence, no studies have examined the co-occurring issues of trauma, substance use and HIV risk behavior among this vulnerable population. The current study examined: 1) trauma history, trauma symptoms and HIV risk behaviors and 2) the relationship between these co-occurring issues among female fish traders from

Association of Childhood Adversities With Suicide Ideation and Attempts in Puerto Rican Young Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Racial/ethnic and sex disparities in suicide ideation and attempts are well established, with higher risk of suicide ideation and attempt among US racial/ethnic minority school-aged youths (than their White peers) and girls and women (than boys and men). The suicide-related risk of racial/ethnic minority young adults, especially young women, may be strongly influenced by adverse childhood experiences, known early determinants of suicide ideation and attempts. OBJECTIVES: To assess lifetime and past-year prevalence estimates of suicide ideation and suicide attempt and to examine se

National and sub-national HIV/AIDS epidemiology, socioeconomic influences, and risk factors in Iran from 1990 to 2021, global burden of disease 2021 study.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a global health challenge. Iran faces significant HIV issues with rising incidence and mortality rates. While antiretroviral therapy has improved life expectancy, projections indicate an above-average increase in the next years. We aimed to report the national and subnational burden of HIV/AIDS and risk factors in Iran from 1990 to 2021 by sex, age, and socio-demographic index (SDI). The analysis used the Global Burden of Disease 2021 data on age-standardized incidence rates, prevalence, death, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The Cause of

Risk and protective factors for interpersonal revictimization in people with post-traumatic stress symptoms: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: People suffering from a psychiatric disorder are at increased risk of being the victim of repeated interpersonal victimization (i.e., revictimization). A psychiatric disorder that has been investigated as both a risk factor and a consequence of interpersonal revictimization is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, to date no systematic review has provided an exclusive overview of longitudinally assessed risk or protective factors for interpersonal revictimization in the context of PTSD. With this systematic review, we aim to provide an overview of (a) which facets of PT

Barriers to ART adherence in sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review toward achieving UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets.

INTRODUCTION: With the 2025 UNAIDS 95-95-95 deadline upon us, significant gaps remain in achieving universal HIV care and treatment targets, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite years of intensified global efforts, progress has lagged, partly driven by the multifaceted challenges of non-adherence to ART, shaped by social, economic, structural, and individual factors. These challenges have been compounded by the ever-changing landscape of global HIV funding, further undermining treatment outcomes. Addressing these interconnected barriers is essential to identify and implement targeted, e

A data quality study investigating the fieldworker's impact on the reporting discrepancies of pre-marital sexual relationships among unmarried men and women in India.

INTRODUCTION: Generating unbiased and accurate assessments of sexual behavior among unmarried individuals is a major challenge, as it is governed by many social, moral, legal conventions and restrictions. These estimates are particularly susceptible to Fieldworker-induced social desirability bias. Accurate estimation of pre-marital sexual behavior is crucial for evaluating many aspects of sexual and reproductive health. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) is the only reliable source of information on pre-marital sexual behavior in India, especially in the absence of any other comparative

Exploring the effects of COVID-19 on family planning: results from a qualitative study in rural Uganda following COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has likely affected the already high unmet need for family planning in low- and middle-income countries. This qualitative study used Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Service Use as a theoretical framework to explore the possible ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of a 3-month government mandated lockdown, might affect family planning outcomes in rural Uganda. A secondary aim was to elicit recommendations to improve family planning service delivery in the context of COVID-19. METHODS: Between June and October 2020, we conducted four
