Effect of psychological stress on the structure of the temporomandibular joint and the expression of MMP-3 and TIMP-3 in the cartilage in rats.

Our aim was to observe the effects of psychological stress on the structure of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and to evaluate the expression of matrix metallopeptidase-3 (MMP-3) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP-3) in condylar chondrocytes in rats. The rats were divided into 3 groups of 12 according to the duration of psychological stress: 3 weeks or 6 weeks, and 6 weeks of recovery. A fourth group of 12 rats was used as controls. Each rat was evaluated by the open-field test and the weight measured. The results confirmed psychological stress in 24 of the 36 rats (67%). The

Association of matrix metalloproteinase gene polymorphism with temporomandibular joint degeneration.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degeneration is a frequent cause of orofacial pain. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) degrade extracellular matrix components and play an important role in TMJ degeneration. We investigated the frequency of the MMP1 1G/2G polymorphism (rs1799750), the MMP3 5A/6A polymorphism (rs3025058), and the MMP9 C/T polymorphism (rs3918242) in individuals with TMJ degeneration, in order to analyze the association of polymorphisms in these genes with TMJ degeneration. The population studied comprised 117 healthy controls and 115 individuals diagnosed with TMJ degeneration upon

Hard tissue structural changes in TMJ morphology prior to orthodontic therapy: a complex motion tomographic study.

OBJECTIVE: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders have been investigated for years due to their probable association with the neuromasticatory apparatus and the myoskeletal framework of the head and neck. In this study, we explored hard tissue structural changes within the TMJ (condyle, glenoid fossa, articular eminence, and joint space) using complex motion tomography. A correlation between these morphologic changes and clinical symptoms of disc-related TMJ disorders was attempted. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Submentovertex and complex motion tomograms were taken on 114 TMJs from 57 patients who

Total reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint. Up to 8 years of follow-up of patients treated with Biomet(®) total joint prostheses.

12 patients underwent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction with Biomet total joint prostheses. Indications for TMJ reconstruction included ankylosis, rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative joint disease and condylar resorption. Five patients had unilateral procedures, seven had bilateral. The follow-up ranged between 2 and 8 years. Amongst the ankylotic patients the mean jaw-opening capacity increased from 3.8mm preoperatively to 30.2mm 1 year after surgery, and in most of those patients the opening capacity remained stable over the years. The other patients maintained a mean opening capac

Analysis of MRI findings in minimum invasive treatment for habitual temporomandibular joint dislocation by autologous blood injection around the temporomandibular joint capsule.

The aim of this study was to investigate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings following autologous blood injection (ABI) for habitual temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation. MRI was performed one hour and four and twelve weeks after ABI, revealing three types of significant findings. The first type was similar to hematoma and/or joint effusion in the articular capsule of the TMJ (type I). The second showed sporadic and diffuse T2 emphasis around the TMJ capsule (type II). The third involved a decreased range of condyle movement compared to before ABI (type III). Furthermore, we analyze

Lubricin is Required for the Structural Integrity and Post-natal Maintenance of TMJ.

The Proteoglycan 4 (Prg4) product lubricin plays essential roles in boundary lubrication and movement in limb synovial joints, but its roles in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are unclear. Thus, we characterized the TMJ phenotype in wild-type and Prg4(-/-) mouse littermates over age. As early as 2 weeks of age, mutant mice exhibited hyperplasia in the glenoid fossa articular cartilage, articular disc, and synovial membrane. By 1 month of age, there were fewer condylar superficial tenascin-C/Col1-positive cells and more numerous apoptotic condylar apical cells, while chondroprogenitors displayed
