INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals. The risk of eventually developing active TB from latent TB infection (LTBI) is about 10% per year in HIV-positive patients in contrast to 10% lifetime risk in HIV-negative patients. Until recently, the tuberculin skin test (TST) was the only tool available for diagnosing LTBI. Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) were recently developed and address many of the limitations of TST test, especially in immunocompromised state.

Despite success in tuberculosis control, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Bangladesh is increasing and currently multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis rate is 3.6% in new cases and 19% in re-treatment cases. This study focused on determination of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis which is warranted for effective prevention strategy. An unmatched case control study was conducted in 2010. Purposively recruited 136 culture-proved multi-drug-resistant- tuberculosis cases and 152 cured tuberculosis patients were interviewed. Associations between exposure and outcome variables were initially tested

BACKGROUND: At least 13-20% of all Tuberculosis (TB) cases are recurrent TB. Recurrent TB has critical public health importance because recurrent TB patients have high risk of Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB). It is critical to understand variations in the prevalence and treatment outcomes of recurrent TB between different geographical settings. The objective of our study was to estimate the prevalence of recurrent TB among TB cases and compare risk of unfavorable treatment outcomes between rural and urban settings.
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study conducted in southern province of Za

This paper describes the management of public relations following an outbreak of multidrug resistant TB at a London hospital. Eight patients were involved, all of the secondary cases occurred in HIV seropositive patients, and three cases died. The paper describes how the the Incident Committee undertook to recall contacts of the cases for screening, inform the general practitioners of all of the contacts about their patients' exposure, warn other organizations and professionals interested or involved in the management of HIV in the London area as to the nature of the incident, and establish a

Ethionamide (ETH) is a second-line drug widely used to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), but its low aqueous solubility compromises bioavailability and limits its therapeutic efficacy. To understand the ways to improve these properties, we combined experimental and computational approaches to elucidate the structural, electronic, thermal, and vibrational properties of ETH crystals. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a monoclinic crystal system (C1c1-space group), stabilized by intermolecular interactions, primarily H⋯H (49.3%) and H⋯S/S⋯H (22.1%) contacts. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a global health crisis, necessitating the development of novel therapeutics against multidrug-resistant pathogens. In this study, ten (10) hybrid imine-benzalacetophenone derivatives (7a-7j), incorporating pyridine and thiophene scaffolds, were synthesized and structurally characterized using FTIR, 1H-NMR, LC-MS, and elemental analysis. In vitro, antimicrobial screening demonstrated that compounds 7c and 7j displayed consistent and potent activity across Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains and fungal pathogens, with compound 7c achieving MIC

Antituberculosis (anti-TB) treatment may be affected by both diabetes and hypoglycemic agents in patients with these 2 comorbidities. However, data supporting this conclusion relate only to standard anti-TB therapies. Sirturo® (bedaquiline) and Deltyba® (delamanid), novel drugs for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), are recommended for diabetes patients when another effective treatment regimen cannot be provided. Currently, there are no clinical data related to the use of these agents in diabetes patients. Possible alterations in the pharmacokinetics of these novel drugs induced by cha

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors in a nosocomial outbreak of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium bovis (MDRMB) tuberculosis (TB) among HIV-infected patients.
DESIGN: We evaluated the study period (from the first to the last MDRMB smear-positive patients hospitalized in the unit) using a case-control study with three control groups. Since MDRMB is extremely rare, we assumed that a single strain was responsible for all six cases.
SETTING: A 19-bed infectious diseases unit in Paris, France.
PATIENTS: The index case was an AIDS patient who was hospitalized in September 1989 because of MDRMB TB

Boron has emerged as a versatile element in medicinal chemistry because its empty p-orbital enables reversible covalent interactions with biologically important nucleophiles while supporting diverse, tunable molecular architectures. Following approval of bortezomib in 2003, boron-containing therapeutics have expanded beyond proteasome inhibition to infectious disease, inflammation, thrombosis, metabolic and cardiovascular disease, cancer immunotherapy, and boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). This chapter critically surveys boron-containing candidates that have entered clinical trials, organi

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a major public health challenge in Malaysia, yet prevalence estimates across population groups and settings are fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize available evidence and identify sources of heterogeneity.
METHODS: We searched major databases for studies reporting LTBI prevalence in Malaysia. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed, with subgroup and meta-regression analyses to explore heterogeneity. Publication bias was assessed using Egger's and Begg's tests. Meta-analysis was performed using O

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children worldwide, with approximately one million new pediatric cases annually. The conventional treatment for drug-susceptible TB has long relied on a 6-month multidrug regimen, which is highly effective but associated with challenges in adherence, toxicity, and healthcare burden. Objectives: To evaluate whether short-course therapy is an appropriate regimen for children and young adolescents with drug-susceptible TB, with particular focus on its efficacy, safety, and applicability in different clinical cont

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Endobronchial one‑way valves (EBVs) were originally developed for lung volume reduction in severe emphysema. Because EBVs allow unidirectional airflow, they have been used off‑label to manage persistent air leaks (PALs)/bronchopleural fistulas (BPFs), haemoptysis, cavitary tuberculosis (TB), and other complex pulmonary conditions. This review summarises the evidence of endobronchial valve applications beyond emphysema.
METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of English‑language literature from January 1, 2000 to August 1, 2025, searching PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and

Treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is challenging due to high treatment failure rate and adverse drug events. This study aimed to develop and validate a simple LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous measurement of five TB drugs in human plasma and to facilitate therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) in MDR-TB treatment to increase efficacy and reduce toxicity. Moxifloxacin, levofloxacin, prothionamide, pyrazinamide and ethambutol were prepared in blank plasma from healthy volunteers and extracted using protein precipitation reagent containing trichloroacetic acid. Separation was achie

CONTEXT: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are converging epidemics, each worsening the morbidity of the other. A study of the prevalence of DM in TB patients assumes great importance.
AIMS: The study aims to evaluate the association between DM and TB over a 10-year period in a tertiary care hospital.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A retrospective observational study in a southern Indian tertiary care teaching hospital was conducted.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with TB diagnosed and treated during the 10-year study period were identified from the hospital database. All relevant cli

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health challenge in Solomon Islands. Limited healthcare resources, geography, and sociocultural beliefs, coupled with lack of laboratory diagnostic tools, leads to diagnostic and treatment outcome uncertainty.
METHODS: Kirakira Hospital (KKH) is the main provincial hospital of Makira-Ulawa Province in Solomon Islands. A retrospective clinical audit of hospitalised TB patients in KKH over a 2-year period between July 2015 and July 2017 was conducted. The cost of TB treatment was estimated by calculating the total number of inpatient

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence of patient acceptability for drug-resistant tuberculosis (DRTB) care in the context of new treatment regimens and HIV co-infection. We aim to describe experiences of DRTB-HIV care among patients in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.
METHODS: In this qualitative study using Bury's framework for chronic illness, we conducted 13 focus groups at a tertiary hospital with 55 patients co-infected with DRTB and HIV (28 women, 27 men) who were receiving new bedaquiline-based treatment for DRTB, concurrent with antiretroviral therapy. Background/Objectives: The increase in incidences of multidrug resistance exacerbates tuberculosis-related global health challenges and underscores a call for more efforts for development of new antitubercular drugs, including the use of medicinal plants, especially those that have been used for generations by traditional healers. Despite reports of antimicrobial activity and chemical profiling of Kirkia wilmsii (K. wilmsii) extracts, chemical structures of the bioactive agents have not been elucidated. Here, we used a combination of bioactivity-guided fractionation, mass spectrometry, and nuc
