Oral and maxillofacial pathology in three dimensions.

It is clear that the dental profession has entered a new age of radiographic diagnostic imaging. A number of examples have shown that being able to visualize oral and maxillofacial pathologic entities in three dimensions assists in diagnosing and planning the appropriate treatment. The technology is an improvement for our profession and for the patients it serves.

Rare Diseases of the Nose, the Paranasal Sinuses, and the Anterior Skull Base.

Due to their low incidence and thus resulting limited diagnostic criteria as well as therapeutic options, rare diseases of the nose, the paranasal sinuses, and the anterior skull base are a significant challenge. The value as of which a disease has to be considered as rare amounts to a maximum of 5 patients per 10 000 people. Within these diseases, however, there are extreme differences. Some rare or orphan diseases like for example the inverted papilloma belong to regularly diagnosed and treated diseases of larger departments of oto-rhino-laryngology whereas other rare diseases and malformati

Antimicrobial treatment guidelines for acute bacterial rhinosinusitis.

UNLABELLED: Treatment guidelines developed by the Sinus and Allergy Health Partnership for acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS) were originally published in 2000. These guidelines were designed to: (1) educate clinicians and patients (or patients’ families) about the differences between viral and bacterial rhinosinusitis; (2) reduce the use of antibiotics for nonbacterial nasal/sinus disease; (3) provide recommendations for the diagnosis and optimal treatment of ABRS; (4) promote the use of appropriate antibiotic therapy when bacterial infection is likely; and (5) describe the current underst

The Endoscopic Versus Open Approach for Anterior Skull Base Tumors: A Systematic Review of Comparative Outcomes and a Framework for Surgical Selection.

BACKGROUND: Anterior skull base tumors (ASBTs) pose significant surgical challenges due to their proximity to critical neurovascular structures. Surgical management has evolved with the adoption of both endoscopic and open approaches. This systematic review synthesizes evidence comparing these approaches in terms of complications, outcomes, and indications. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines, analyzing studies published between 1981 and 2022. A total of 1200 articles were initially identified from databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, JSTOR, and ScienceDi

Multicenter Survival Analysis and Application of an Olfactory Neuroblastoma Staging Modification Incorporating Hyams Grade.

IMPORTANCE: Current olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) staging systems inadequately delineate locally advanced tumors, do not incorporate tumor grade, and poorly estimate survival and recurrence. OBJECTIVE: The primary aims of this study were to (1) examine the clinical covariates associated with survival and recurrence of ONB in a modern-era multicenter cohort and (2) incorporate Hyams tumor grade into existing staging systems to assess its ability to estimate survival and recurrence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective, multicenter, case-control study included patients with ON

Study of Profile of Mucormycosis During the Second Wave of COVID-19 in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Introduction and aim Mucormycosis is a lethal opportunistic infection caused by filamentous fungi of the family Mucoraceae (black fungus). There has been a sudden increase in the incidence of these cases during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the immunocompromised state caused by the disease and its treatment. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical management are essential to reduce disease morbidity and mortality. Through this study, we aim to study the clinical features, risk factors, laboratory investigations, and radiological findings of patients with mucormycosis as well

Facial Fractures and Mixed Dentition - What Are the Implications of Dentition Status in Pediatric Facial Fracture Management?

INTRODUCTION: The stage of maturation of the pediatric facial skeleton at the time of injury has a significant impact on both facial fracture patterns and management strategies. For instance, the relative prominence of the pediatric cranium during the early years of life affords protection to the structures of the midface, whereas delayed aeration of the frontal sinuses may predispose younger patients to frontal bone fractures. The dentition status of a pediatric patient may have similar implications in the setting of facial fracture. In this study, the authors examine the effect of dentition

Strategy to select nasopharyngeal cancer patients for adaptive radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients experience significant anatomical changes during radiation treatment (RT). Adaptive radiotherapy (ART) can be initiated in response to specific events or at scheduled intervals during treatment, prompting questions about patient selection, timing, and reliable triggers for re-CT and replanning. This study aimed to develop a method for selecting NPC patients for ART before treatment and identify the optimal timing for its implementation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated NPC patients treated at University Hospitals Leuven betwe

A rare case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the frontal sinus and rapid review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Primary lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses, especially involving the frontal sinus, is exceedingly rare. Extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) located in the head and neck frequently poses diagnostic challenges because its nonspecific symptoms can be mistaken for benign issues such as rhinosinusitis. AIM: This case report seeks to emphasize the challenges in diagnosis, the aggressive characteristics, and the effective treatment of an uncommon manifestation of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) primarily affecting the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. CASE PRESENTATION: We present

Rare Extraoral Plasmablastic Lymphoma in the Context of HIV and Toxoplasmosis: A Detailed Case Analysis With Therapeutic Insights.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), a rare aggressive B-cell malignancy linked to HIV, is increasingly noted in extraoral sites beyond its traditional oral cavity presentation. This case report details a 48-year-old HIV-positive woman with prior cerebral toxoplasmosis, presenting with facial swelling, pain, proptosis, and dysphagia despite antiretroviral therapy and cotrimoxazole prophylaxis (CD4 120 cells/μL, suboptimal viral suppression). Imaging identified a sinonasal mass with nasopharyngeal involvement and lymphadenopathy, with immunohistochemistry confirming PBL (MUM1+, weakly CD79a+, CD20-, C
