[Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses: a report of 14 cases].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Primary paranasal sinus lymphoma (PPSL) is a rare presentation of extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with a natural history distinct from other lymphomas. This study was to evaluate the clinical and pathologic characteristics, treatment outcomes and prognosis of PPSL. METHODS: The records of 14 PPSL patients, treated at Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University from 1994 to 2006, were analyzed. RESULTS: The primary involvement sites included the maxillary sinus (11 cases), ethmoid sinus (2 cases), and sphenoid sinus (1 case). All patients were at stage I-II (Ann Arbor sy

Rare Extraoral Plasmablastic Lymphoma in the Context of HIV and Toxoplasmosis: A Detailed Case Analysis With Therapeutic Insights.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), a rare aggressive B-cell malignancy linked to HIV, is increasingly noted in extraoral sites beyond its traditional oral cavity presentation. This case report details a 48-year-old HIV-positive woman with prior cerebral toxoplasmosis, presenting with facial swelling, pain, proptosis, and dysphagia despite antiretroviral therapy and cotrimoxazole prophylaxis (CD4 120 cells/μL, suboptimal viral suppression). Imaging identified a sinonasal mass with nasopharyngeal involvement and lymphadenopathy, with immunohistochemistry confirming PBL (MUM1+, weakly CD79a+, CD20-, C

Olfactory Neuroblastoma-A Challenging Fine Line between Metastasis and Hematology.

Developing in a limited space, rare tumors located at the nose and paranasal sinuses are sometimes difficult to diagnose due to their modest clinical presentation, which is uncorrelated with anatomopathological diversity. This limits the preoperative diagnosis without added immune histochemical study; for that reason, we present our experience with these tumors with the intention of raising awareness. The patient included in our study was investigated by our department through clinical and endoscopic examination, imaging investigations, and an anatomic-pathological study. The selected patient

Preliminary study of the lymphatic drainage system of the nose and paranasal sinuses and its role in detection of sentinel metastatic nodes.

CONCLUSIONS: The normal nasal lymphatic drainage runs via the facial vessels into the neck lymphatic nodes of levels I-II and this drainage pattern was found in our patients with sinonasal tumors. We found only one true-positive sentinel lymph node (SLN). Our pathological material was very limited and so further investigations are required before any valid conclusions can be drawn concerning the clinical value of SLNs in nasal tumors. Objectives. To detect the lymph collection route of the nasal fossae and paranasal sinuses and to identify the first echelon in the tumor metastatic cascade in o

Systematic Review of Case Reports and Case Series Published Between 2015 and 2025 on the Use of Biomaterials for Closure of Oroantral Fistula.

Oroantral fistulas (OAFs) challenge the clinical decision-making of oral surgeons, requiring selection of an effective biomaterial for successful closure. This systematic review aims to evaluate recent biomaterials and techniques for closing oroantral fistulas, as reported in case reports and series. The goal of this review was to assess how different biomaterials affect the clinical closure of OAFs and oroantral communication. This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines. Multiple scientific databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library) were comprehensively searched using relevant

Investigation of the Effectiveness of Surgical Treatment on Maxillary Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: A Literature Review.

AIM: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) occurs after exposure to medication (antiresorptive or antiangiogenic agents) for bone-related complications. It is more common in the mandible than in the maxilla. The present study investigated maxillary MRONJ in elderly patients through a meta-analysis. METHODS: Keywords, including "MRONJ", "maxilla", and "surgery", were entered into databases, including Embase, PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest, which were searched systematically. RESULTS: Investigating 77 studies, we found that 18 (2 case reports and 16 case series) p

SMARCB1 (INI-1)-deficient Sinonasal Carcinoma: A Series of 39 Cases Expanding the Morphologic and Clinicopathologic Spectrum of a Recently Described Entity.

To more fully characterize the clinical and pathologic spectrum of a recently described tumor entity of the sinonasal tract characterized by loss of nuclear expression of SMARCB1 (INI1), we analyzed 39 SMARCB1-deficient sinonasal carcinomas collected from multiple medical centers. The tumors affected 23 males and 16 females with an age range of 19 to 89 years (median, 52). All patients presented with locally advanced disease (T3, n=5; T4, n=27) involving the sinuses (mainly ethmoid) with variable involvement of the nasal cavity. Thirty patients received surgery and/or radiochemotherapy with cu

Pedicled myofascial temporalis flap for closure of large maxillary defects after medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. A case series.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) located in the maxilla may lead to challenging oro-antral and oro-nasal defects too extensive to be predictably closed with local soft tissue flaps. The use of a pedicled myofascial temporalis flap (PMTF) is, however, well-established for closing large maxillary defects following ablative craniomaxillofacial surgery. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the use of PMTF for maxillary defect closure in patients with stage 3 MRONJ. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted based on data from the C

Orbital Onslaught: An Atypical Presentation of Mucormycosis in a Diabetic and Hypertensive Patient.

Mucormycosis, primarily known to affect the sinuses and brain, severely threatens immunocompromised individuals. Its occurrence in the orbital region is rare and potentially devastating. We report a unique case of a 50-year-old male with longstanding diabetes and hypertension who exhibited isolated orbital mucormycosis confined to the right eye. The patient presented with fever and acute vision loss without classic sinusitis symptoms; earlier mismanagement led to an aggressive relapse. An orbital computed tomography (CT) scan revealed inflammatory changes indicative of an early-stage invasive

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma originating from the maxillary sinus with skin metastases: A case report and review of literature.

BackgroundDiffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of malignant lymphoma (ML), accounting for 30%-40% of cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in adults. Primary paranasal sinus lymphoma is a rare presentation of extranodal NHL that accounts for only 0.17% of all lymphomas. ML from the maxillary sinus (MS) is a particularly rare presentation, and is thus often difficult to diagnose. We have reported the first known case of DLBCL originating from the MS with rapidly occurrent multiple skin metastasis.Case summaryAn 81-year-old Japanese man visited our hospital due to contin

Weekly teriparatide injections successfully treated advanced bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.

This study investigated whether weekly teriparatide (TPTD) injections are as effective as daily teriparatide injections for the treatment of stage 3 bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) and compared serum markers of bone turnover between the two treatment regimens. Daily TPTD treatment has recently been reported to be effective for BRONJ, but there are no reports describing the effectiveness of weekly TPTD injections. We report two patients with stage 3 BRONJ. One patient was successfully treated with weekly TPTD injections and the other with daily TPTD injections. Changes

Yellow nail syndrome: a review.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS; OMIM 153300, ORPHA662) is a very rare disorder that almost always occurs after 50 years of age but a juvenile or familial form has also been observed. YNS is diagnosed based on a triad associating yellow nail discoloration, pulmonary manifestations (chronic cough, bronchiectasia, pleural effusion) and lower limb lymphedema. Chronic sinusitis is frequently associated with the triad. YNS etiology remains unknown but a role of lymphatic impairment is usually evoked. YNS is more frequently isolated but may be associated in rare cases with autoimmune diseases, other clini

Chinese expert consensus on the diagnosis and clinical management of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a side effect that occurs after treatment for systemic diseases. However, most institutions currently rely on empirical methods to make diagnosis and treatment plans, and there is a lack of consensus or guidelines for the classification, staging and treatment of MRONJ in China. To address this gap and improve prognosis, an expert panel representing 11 renowned domestic medical colleges and affiliated hospitals in China was convened. The panel made a comprehensive literature review of previous treatment experiences and research findings to

Osteonecrosis of the jaws in patients treated with bisphosphonates.

The literature describes an increasing presence of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ), characterized by the exposure for over 8 weeks of necrotic bone in the maxillofacial region, after bisphosphonate therapy, in the absence of prior maxillary radiotherapy. The present literature review examines the etiopathogenesis, risk factors, clinical forms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of bisphosphonate-induced ONJ. In addition, a review is made of all the series involving over 15 patients diagnosed with this disorder between 1 January 2011 and 15 May 2011. A PubMed-Medline sea

Role of mercury (Hg) in resistant infections & effective treatment of Chlamydia trachomatis and Herpes family viral infections (and potential treatment for cancer) by removing localized Hg deposits with Chinese parsley and delivering effective antibiotics using various drug uptake enhancement methods.

The authors found that antibiotics used to treat various infections often were ineffective in the presence of abnormal localized deposits of heavy metals like Hg and Pb, which were often observed to co-exist with Chlamydia trachomatis, Herpes Simplex Types I & II, Cytomegalovirus(CMV), and other micro-organisms. Our earlier research revealed that despite rigorous treatment with antibiotics together with various drug uptake enhancement techniques, subjects who had been treated for Chlamydia trachomatis infections, seemingly successfully with disappearance of their symptoms, were often experienc

The unusual first sign of presentation of hepatocellular carcinoma: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy, characterized by aggressive biological behavior and a high propensity for extrahepatic spread. The most common sites of metastasis are the lungs, regional lymph nodes, bones, adrenal glands, and peritoneum. In contrast, the paranasal sinuses are an unusual site for metastatic HCC, and involvement of the sphenoid sinus represents an even rarer event. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 67-year-old male patient who presented with transient diplopia, left eyelid ptosis, and refractory epistaxis as the i

Exposures to IARC Carcinogenic Agents in Work Settings Not Traditionally Associated with Sinonasal Cancer Risk: The Experience of the Italian National Sinonasal Cancer Registry.

The aim of this study is to highlight tasks and jobs not commonly considered at high risk for sinonasal cancer (SNC) identified by Regional Operating Centers currently active in the Italian National Sinonasal Cancer Registry (ReNaTuNS), which retrieve occupational histories through a standardized questionnaire. Data on exposures to IARC carcinogenic agents in work settings unknown to be associated with SNC risk were collected and analyzed. Out of 2,208 SNC cases recorded in the ReNaTuNS database, 216 cases and their worked exposure periods were analyzed. Unsuspected jobs with exposure to wood
