Rising incidence of multiple sclerosis in females associated with urbanization.

OBJECTIVE: To design and perform a case-control study of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Crete, an island of 0.6 million people, that has experienced profound socioeconomic changes in recent decades. METHODS: All MS cases occurring on Crete from 1980 to 2008 were ascertained. To search for putative risk factors, a structured questionnaire of 71 variables was employed, with patients with MS (n = 657) being compared to random controls (n = 593) matched for age, gender, and current place of residence. RESULTS: MS incidence rose markedly on Crete over the past 3 decades. This increase was associated

Determinants of fertility desire among reproductive aged married and cohabiting women in Ethiopia a multilevel analysis of PMAET 2021 data.

In Ethiopia, numerous efforts have been undertaken to control the rapid growth of the population and decrease the average number of births per woman, in the last ten years, though it has not been possible to achieve as much change as was planned and intended in the National Health Sector Transformation Plan (HSTP II) and reproductive health (RH 2015-2020) strategies. The annual growth of the population and fertility rates remained at 2.7 and 4.6, respectively. Fertility is one of the fundamental aspects influencing population dynamics, while women fertility desire to have a child plays a cruci

Unveiling the burden of human papillomavirus infection and risk factors among Indigenous women in Mizoram, Northeast India.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a significant public health concern globally, with its burden increasing in regions with limited access to screening and preventive measures. Understanding how HPV affects different populations is crucial, genetic background, behavioral factors, sexual health practices, co-infections, and access to screening and vaccination services significantly influence disease dynamics, prevalence of high-risk genotypes, and progression to malignancies such as cervical cancer. Such variations underscore the importance of region-specific epidemiological

Adolescent males and young females in tehran: differing perspectives, behaviors and needs for reproductive health and implications for gender sensitive interventions.

BACKGROUND: Despite cultural and religious prohibitions against premarital heterosexual relationships and intimacy, some recent evidence suggests some rise in premarital heterosexual interactions and relationships among young people. On the other hand, although HIV in Iran is a concentrated epidemic and mainly reported among high risk groups such as injecting drug users (IDUs), but there are evidences that the mode of transmission is shifting towards sexual contacts. This trend has caused concern among health policy makers in terms of prevention of STDs and HIV/AIDS particularly, among young p

Prevalence and determinants of precancerous cervical lesions among women screened for cervical cancer in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Precancerous cervical lesions, or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), represent a significant precursor to cervical cancer, posing a considerable threat to women's health globally, particularly in developing countries. In Africa, the burden of premalignant cervical lesions is not well studied. Therefore, the main purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the overall prevalence of precancerous cervical lesions and identifying determinants among women who underwent cervical cancer screening in Africa. METHODS: This study followed the Preferred Report

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards HPV vaccination among reproductive age women in a HIV hotspot in the US.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the US, responsible for cervical cancer and increased risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) acquisition. Despite an effective HPV vaccine, women's HPV vaccination coverage and rates remain far below desired levels. This study aimed to evaluate HPV knowledge, attitudes, and vaccination practices as well as factors associated with HPV vaccination among women of reproductive age living in Miami, Florida, a Southern US city with a high incidence of STIs and low HPV vaccination coverage. METHODS:

Etiologies of genital inflammation and ulceration in symptomatic Rwandan men and women responding to radio promotions of free screening and treatment services.

INTRODUCTION: The longstanding inadequacies of syndromic management for genital ulceration and inflammation are well-described. The Rwanda National Guidelines for sexually transmitted infection (STI) syndromic management are not yet informed by the local prevalence and correlates of STI etiologies, a component World Health Organization guidelines stress as critical to optimize locally relevant algorithms. METHODS: Radio announcements and pharmacists recruited symptomatic patients to seek free STI services in Kigali. Clients who sought services were asked to refer sexual partners and symptomat

7Alpha-methyl-19-nortestosterone maintains sexual behavior and mood in hypogonadal men.

The synthetic steroid 7alpha-methyl-19-nortestosterone (MENT) is a potent androgen that is resistant to 5alpha-reductase. It thus has decreased activity at the prostate and may have advantages over testosterone-based regimens in long term treatment or as part of a male contraceptive. Administration to eugonadal men results in suppression of gonadotropins, but its ability to support androgen-dependent behavior has not been investigated. For sustained release administration, MENT acetate was used, because its diffusion characteristics were more suitable for use in implants. However, upon release

Frustrated fertility: a population paradox.

This Bulletin examines the causes of subfecundity -- the diminished ability to reproduce -- and its effect today and in the past on the fertility, or actual reproductive performance, of individuals and, hence, populations. By definition, all real populations are subfecund since all experience some degree of involuntary biological factors affecting coitus, conception, or the ability to carry a conceptus to live birth which reduces their fecundity below the estimated biological population maximum of 15 children per woman. Affecting both men and women, these factors fall into 5 categories: geneti

Knowledge about Ultraviolet Radiation Hazards and Tanning Behavior of Cosmetology and Medical Students.

Dear Editor, Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a well-known physical hazard responsible for photoaging, photoallergic, and phototoxic reactions as well as carcinogenesis, including life-threatening melanomas (1,2). Overexposure to both natural and artificial UV radiation is a public health concern. 30% of cancers diagnosed worldwide are skin cancers. Approximately three million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132 000 new cases of melanomas are diagnosed globally each year (3). Sunburns, especially in childhood, are a very important risk factor for melanomas. Several studies demonstrated a positive a

Core state preconception health indicators - pregnancy risk assessment monitoring system and behavioral risk factor surveillance system, 2009.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Promoting preconception health can potentially improve women's health and pregnancy outcomes. Evidence-based interventions exist to reduce many maternal behaviors and chronic conditions that are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as tobacco use, alcohol use, inadequate folic acid intake, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. The 2006 national recommendations to improve preconception health included monitoring improvements in preconception health by maximizing public health surveillance (CDC.
