The Impact of Preoperative Oral Health on Buccal Mucosa Graft Histology.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have elucidated the unique macroscopic and histological properties of buccal mucosa that make it a viable and durable graft for urethral augmentation. However, no prior literature has directly investigated the impact of preoperative oral health on these features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed all consenting patients who underwent buccal mucosal graft (BMG) urethroplasty at our institution from 2018 to 2020. Validated oral health surveys, the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Kayser-Jones Brief Oral Health Status Examination (BOHSE) were completed preo

Incidence of meatal stenosis following neonatal circumcision in a primary care setting.

The objective of this study was to prospectively document the incidence of meatal stenosis in boys. The study included a consecutive sample of boys whose visit with the physician included a genital examination in a private primary care pediatric practice in rural northern Wisconsin. Meatal stenosis was diagnosed in boys from 1.94 to 12.34 years of age. The diagnosis was made in 24 of 329 circumcised boys who were Tanner I development and older than 3 years of age (7.29%, 95%CI=4.48-10.10%). Nearly all required meatotomy to resolve their symptoms. All of the boys with meatal stenosis were circu

Vapor resection: a good alternative to standard loop resection in the management of prostates >40 cc.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSES: The morbidity of transurethral vesection of the prostate (TURP) necessitates constant attempts at modifications to the standard equipment and technique. Patients with larger prostates (>40 cc) need a longer time for the procedure, and the blood loss, requirement for irrigation fluid, and incidence of postoperative complications tend to be greater. We report on the safety and efficacy of TURP with the thick vapor resection loop compared with the standard wire loop in comparable groups of patients with prostates >40 cc. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We randomized 100 patients w

Surgical Complications in a large series of Retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy: impact of surgical experience and technical modifications (1016 cases).

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has become the standard surgical treatment for prostate cancer. The Retzius-sparing approach (RS-RARP) offers improved functional outcomes; however, detailed data on non-functional perioperative and postoperative complications remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, spectrum, and management of complications following RS-RARP in a large series and to assess the impact of progressive technical modifications. We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of 1016 consecutive patients who underwent RS-RAR

Prostatic artery embolization compared to transurethral resection of the prostate and prostatic urethral lift: a real-world population-based study.

BACKGROUND: There are growing interests for minimally invasive surgical techniques (MISTs) for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)-associated lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) uses selective angioembolization of prostatic arteries, thereby reducing size to improve LUTS/BPH. However, real-world data comparing surgical outcomes between MISTs and tissue resective techniques are lacking. We assessed the differences in surgical outcomes between PAE, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), and prostatic urethral lift (PUL) in a real-worl

Fixed or adjustable sling in the treatment of male stress urinary incontinence: results from a large cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Fixed and adjustable male slings for the treatment of male urinary stress incontinence became increasingly popular during the last decade. Although fixed slings are recommended for the treatment of mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence, there is still a lack of evidence regarding the precise indication for an adjustable male sling. Furthermore, there is still no evidence that one type of male sling is superior to another. However, both, adjustable and fixed slings, are commonly utilized in daily clinical practice. This current investigation aims to evaluate the differences b
