Towards an attract-and-reward strategy: evaluating nectar resources and HIPVs under laboratory conditions to enhance Aphelinus mali parasitism activity, a key parasitoid of Eriosoma lanigerum.

BACKGROUND: The attract-and-reward strategy involves attracting natural enemies using volatile compounds or insectary plants and rewarding them with refuge and food sources. Plants with accessible nectar and early bloom together with herbivore-induced plant volatiles, such as phenylacetaldehyde (Pal) and methyl salicylate (MeSA), could enhance populations of Aphelinus mali Haldeman (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a main parasitoid of Eriosoma lanigerum (Hausmann) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). RESULTS: The extrafloral nectary plant species Euphorbia segetalis was attractive to A. mali, whereas the flora

Molecular biology of Cotton Leafroll Dwarf Virus (CLRDV) and potential application of CRISPR-Cas technology for developing virus-resistant cotton.

Cotton leafroll dwarf virus (CLRDV) poses an increasing threat to global cotton production. Transmitted by the cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) in a persistent, circulative manner, CLRDV exhibits a wide geographical distribution, with documented presence in South America, Africa, Asia, and the USA. Infection can result in either cotton blue disease (CBD) in South America or cotton leafroll dwarf disease (CLRDD) in the USA, both of which are associated with CLRDV. The considerable genetic diversity and frequent recombination events within CLRDV populations contribute to this symptom variability an

Discovery of Triazone Derivatives Containing Acylhydrazone and Phenoxypyridine Motifs as Novel Insecticidal and Antiphytopathogenic Fungus Agents.

A series of novel triazone derivatives containing acylhydrazone and phenoxypyridine motifs were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their biological activities. The bioassay results indicated that most of the target compounds exhibited excellent insecticidal activities against bean aphids. In particular, compounds 3i and 3e showed excellent aphicidal activities comparable to pymetrozine, thus emerging as novel insecticidal lead compounds. Additionally, compounds 3c (60%), 3e (60%), and 3f (60%) exhibited good larvicidal activities against C. pipiens pallens at 0.5 mg/kg. Further fungicida

The Toxicity of Eichhornia crassipes Fractionated Extracts against Aphis craccivora and Its Safety in Albino Rats.

Eichhornia crassipes were evaluated in order to investigate the insecticidal activity towards Aphis craccivora adults. The LC50 values were promising and reflected the bio-efficacy of the tested extracts (39 and 42 mg/L), respectively, and reduced the fecundity markedly. Using GC/MS analysis, the major components were n-hexadecanoic, linolenic, hexadecenoic, myristic, stearic acids, linolelaidic acid, methyl ester and some terpenoids, alkaloids, and hydrocarbons. A safety assessment of non-target organisms is essential for the development of new pesticides. In order to guide the rational use o

CsAFS1 Enhances the Self-Resistance of Tea Plants by Promoting Terpenoid Accumulation.

The intercropping of tea plants with Chinese chestnut has been recognized as an advanced and eco-friendly cultivation method that enhances the self-resistance of tea plants. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plant hormones and CsAFS1 based on previous findings and to reveal the mechanism by which CsAFS1 enhances the resistance of tea plants intercropped with Chinese chestnut. In this study, an α-farnesene synthase (AFS) was identified in tea plants intercropped with Chinese chestnut through transcriptome sequencing. This gene was actively expressed during cold and under

Protective perfumes: the role of vegetative volatiles in plant defense against herbivores.

Herbivore damage to leaves and other vegetative tissues often stimulates the emission of volatile compounds, suggesting that these substances have a role in plant defense. In fact, ample evidence has accumulated in the last few years indicating that volatiles from vegetative plant parts can directly repel herbivores, such as ovipositing butterflies and host-seeking aphids. Volatiles have also been demonstrated to protect plants by attracting herbivore enemies, such as parasitic wasps, predatory arthropods and possibly even insectivorous birds. Even below ground herbivory results in the release

Bioefficacy of Indian Beauveria bassiana and Lecanicillium lecanii isolates against Lipaphis erysimi (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and their safety to Apis cerana (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

Environmental issues associated with the excessive use of chemical substances have received increasing attention globally, particularly regarding their effects on non-target/beneficial insects such as pollinators. To overcome such drawbacks, alternative control methods are being increasingly evaluated. A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of two Indian biopesticidal isolates against the mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi, on rapeseed crops and to investigate their potential risks to the pollinator honeybee, Apis cerana. Laboratory bioassays showed that Beauveria bassiana AS-4220 was

Deeper view on Patchiella reaumuri (Kaltenbach, 1843) (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Pemphiginae): General morphology and sensilla diversity.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods were used for the first time to elucidate the external morphology of Patchiella reaumuri reaumuri (Kaltenbach, 1843) (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Pemphiginae). We examined and compared the external morphology of stem mothers and alate viviparous females from the parthenogenetic generation. Analysis identified diverse sensilla types, including coleoconic, campaniform, placoid, and trichoid sensilla, occurring on the antennae, mouthparts, and legs. Beyond the sensilla previously documented in the literature, we identified for the first time in aphids chaetic-

Individual and population variation in invertebrates revealed by Inter-simple Sequence Repeats (ISSRs).

PCR-based molecular markers are well suited for questions requiring large scale surveys of plant and animal populations. Inter-simple Sequence Repeats or ISSRs are analyzed by a recently developed technique based on the amplification of the regions between inverse-oriented microsatellite loci with oligonucleotides anchored in microsatellites themselves. ISSRs have shown much promise for the study of the population biology of plants, but have not yet been explored for similar studies of animals. The value of ISSRs is demonstrated for the study of animal species with low levels of within-populat

Historical metabolic adaptation potentiates the rapid evolution of flonicamid resistance in Myzus persicae.

Rapid adaptation to novel environments is often shaped not only by newly acquired mutations but also by historical genetic backgrounds established through prior evolutionary events. However, the extent to which such historical contingency contributes to the rapid evolution of insecticide resistance remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the emergence of resistance to flonicamid, a recently deployed insecticide, in the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae. We show that constitutive overexpression of the P450 enzymes CYP6CY3 and CYP6CY4, already widespread in populations of M. persicae be

Integrative transcriptomic and microbiome analyses reveal thermal adaptation mechanisms in green and red color morphs of Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Under global warming, the frequency and severity of agricultural pest outbreaks have intensified, posing serious threats to agriculture. The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae)), an important agricultural pest, exhibits green and red color morphs and differentiated thermal tolerance, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, based on transcriptome and 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing, we analyzed the gene expression patterns and microbial community dynamics of green and red morphs of M. persicae under high-temperature stresses (30 °C and 35 °C) and

Recognition of a salivary effector by the TNL protein RCSP promotes effector-triggered immunity and systemic resistance in Nicotiana benthamiana.

Insects secret chemosensory proteins (CSPs) into plant cells as potential effector proteins during feeding. The molecular mechanisms underlying how CSPs activate plant immunity remain largely unknown. We show that CSPs from six distinct insect orders induce dwarfism when overexpressed in Nicotiana benthamiana. Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression of Nilaparvata lugens CSP11 (NlCSP11) triggered cell death and plant dwarfism, both of which were dependent on ENHANCED DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY 1 (EDS1), N requirement gene 1 (NRG1) and SENESCENCE-ASSOCIATED GENE 101 (SAG101), indicating the act

Design, Synthesis, and Bioactivities of Novel 4-(Trifluoromethyl)nicotinamide Derivatives for Use as Insecticides.

Hemiptera pests damage crops and transmit viruses through piercing-sucking mouthparts, causing enormous economic losses and inducing resistance to insecticides. Novel insecticides are critical to combat rising resistance. Nicotinamidase, a newly validated target present in the insect chordotonal organ, has attracted attention. A series of novel sulfonyl, carbonyl, and amide group-based 4-(trifluoromethyl)nicotinamide derivatives was designed using the prodrug strategy and an intermediate derivatization method. Bioactivity assays indicated that most compounds possessed enhanced insecticidal act
