Emotional food craving across the eating disorder spectrum: an ecological momentary assessment study.

PURPOSE: Emotional eating during negative emotions might underlie disordered eating behavior (i.e., binge eating and food restriction). Positive emotions, by contrast, seem to promote healthier eating behavior. Naturalistic research on the links between emotions and eating across individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-purge anorexia nervosa (AN-BP), and restrictive anorexia nervosa (AN-R) is, however, lacking. METHODS: Individuals without eating disorders (comparison group, CG, n = 85), and patients with BED (n = 41), BN (n = 50), AN-BP (n = 26), and AN-R (n

The melanocortin agonist, melanotan II, enhances proceptive sexual behaviors in the female rat.

Melanocortins have been reported to play a role in the control of both male and female sexual behavior. The present study examined the effects of melanotan-II (MT-II), a cyclic peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone on appetitive and consummatory aspects of female sexual behavior, including aspects of sexual proceptivity (solicitations, hops and darts, ear wiggling, pacing) and receptivity (lordosis). One group of ovariectomized Long-Evans rats (n=7) was primed subcutaneously with estradiol benzoate (EB) and progesterone (P) (10 microg and 500 microg respectively) and another

Circulating glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) inhibits eating in male rats by acting in the hindbrain and without inducing avoidance.

To address the neural mediation of the eating-inhibitory effect of circulating glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), we investigated the effects of 1) intra-fourth ventricular infusion of the GLP-1 receptor antagonist exendin-9 or 2) area postrema lesion on the eating-inhibitory effect of intrameal hepatic portal vein (HPV) GLP-1 infusion in adult male rats. To evaluate the physiological relevance of the observed effect we examined 3) the influence of GLP-1 on flavor acceptance in a 2-bottle conditioned flavor avoidance test, and 4) measured active GLP-1 in the HPV and vena cava (VC) in relation to

Effects of deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) and aldosterone on Sar1-angiotensin II binding and angiotensin-converting enzyme binding sites in brain.

1. It is known that regulation of salt appetite is a complex behavior controlled in the brain by interaction of mineralocorticoids (MC) and angiotensin II (ANGII). To investigate the effects of MC on ANGII receptors and ANGII synthesis, we have studied two models of salt appetite control. 2. In the first model, doses of DOCA sufficient to induce salt appetite of intact rats were given. In the second one, we studied the effects of aldosterone (ALDO) in doses sufficient to suppress salt appetite developed by prior adrenalectomy (ADX). 3. Binding to ANGII receptors was determined in brain section

PACAP and VIP Neuropeptides' and Receptors' Effects on Appetite, Satiety and Metabolism.

The overwhelming increase in the prevalence of obesity and related disorders in recent years is one of the greatest threats to the global healthcare system since it generates immense healthcare costs. As the prevalence of obesity approaches epidemic proportions, the importance of elucidating the mechanisms regulating appetite, satiety, body metabolism, energy balance and adiposity has garnered significant attention. Currently, gastrointestinal (GI) bariatric surgery remains the only approach capable of achieving successful weight loss. Appetite, satiety, feeding behavior, energy intake and exp

Performance of alpha7 nicotinic receptor null mutants is impaired in appetitive learning measured in a signaled nose poke task.

Wild-type and mutant mice lacking expression of alpha5, alpha7, beta2, beta3, or beta4 neuronal nicotinic cholinergic receptors (nAChRs) were compared on a signaled nose poke task, a multi-phased task used to measure appetitive learning and impulsivity. In the early phases of training, mutants of all nicotinic lines did not differ compared to wild types in the days to reach criterion when mice were required to nose poke for a sucrose reward on FR1 or FR3 schedules, or in their ability to respond to an auditory clicker to receive a sucrose reward. However, mutants lacking alpha7 nAChRs, but not

Predicting cookie visual appetite with interpretable machine learning.

Visual appearance shapes consumers' pre-ingestive evaluation of baked foods, yet machine-vision studies have rarely linked interpretable appearance descriptors directly with consumer visual appetite. This study developed an interpretable machine-vision framework for commercial handmade cookies. A total of 159 standardized images from 51 cookie categories were evaluated by 700 adults, yielding 6829 valid visual-appetite responses. Sixty descriptors spanning color, texture, morphology, spatial color distribution, and surface characteristics were extracted. A 12-feature RBF-SVM achieved an Accura

Anorectic effect of COR659 in a rat model of overeating.

COR659 is a new compound, the action of which is exerted via a dual mechanism: positive allosteric modulation of the GABAB receptor; antagonism or inverse agonism at the cannabinoid CB1 receptor. Recent lines of experimental evidence have indicated that COR659 potently and effectively reduced operant self-administration of and reinstatement of seeking behaviour for a chocolate-flavoured beverage. The present study was designed to assess whether the ability of COR659 to diminish these addictive-like, food-motivated behaviours extended to a rat model of overeating palatable food. To this end, ra

Modulatory effects of pheromone on olfactory learning and memory in moths.

Pheromones are chemical communication signals known to elicit stereotyped behaviours and/or physiological processes in individuals of the same species, generally in relation to a specific function (e.g. mate finding in moths). However, recent research suggests that pheromones can modulate behaviours, which are not directly related to their usual function and thus potentially affect behavioural plasticity. To test this hypothesis, we studied the possible modulatory effects of pheromones on olfactory learning and memory in Agrotis ipsilon moths, which are well-established models to study sex-phe

Molecular and elemental effects underlying the biochemical action of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in appetite control.

Recent studies highlight that obesity may alter the electric activity in brain areas triggering appetite and craving. Transcranial direct current brain stimulation (tDCS) has recently emerged as a safe alternative for treating food addiction via modulating cortical excitability without any high-risk surgical procedure to be utilized. As for anodal-type tDCS (atDCS), we observe increased excitability and spontaneous firing of the cortical neurons, whilst for the cathodal-type tDCS (ctDCS) a significant decrease is induced. Unfortunately, for the method to be fully used in a clinical setting, it

Fasting and refeeding induce differential changes in hypothalamic mRNA abundance of appetite-associated factors in 7 day-old Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica.

There is little information regarding effects of fasting on feeding behavior and hypothalamic physiology in young Japanese quail. The aim was thus to measure food intake and hypothalamic mRNA in response to fasting and refeeding. Five d-old quail ate little during the dark cycle. Food intake was greatest during the first 2 h of the light cycle. Six day-old quail fasted for 6 h ate the most during the first 15 min of refeeding. In 7 d-old quail, 3 h of fasting up-regulated hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY), NPY receptor sub-type 2 (NPYR2), agouti-related peptide (AgRP), orexin receptor 2 (ORXR2

The temporal sequence of magnetic brain activity for food categorization and memorization--an exploratory study.

The importance of food stimuli for all living organisms is defined by their relevance for survival. Therefore, visual processing of food stimuli is influenced by many factors, such as cultural and societal background. In this magnetoencephalography (MEG) study, we examined the categorization and memorization of visual food and non-food stimuli in lean subjects, using a one-back working memory task. We found an increase in neural activity in several different regions of the brain elicited by food stimuli in comparison to non-food stimuli. The first observed significant difference was found in l

The putative role of neuropeptide autoantibodies in anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Anorexia nervosa remains a disease of unknown etiology. This situation explains the failure to develop effective therapy and emphasizes the fact that the neurobiological mechanisms of appetite and emotion are still incompletely understood. The present review is the first summary of recent research assigning to the immune system a new role in energy and emotional regulation by the production of autoantibodies directed against neuropeptides. The results of this research are promising to shed light on the etiology of eating disorders and open new fields for biological diagnosis

Contingent tolerance to amphetamine hypophagia: new insights into the role of environmental context in the expression of stereotypy.

A growing literature attests to the fact that the environment in which a drug is given can have a profound effect on the development and expression of tolerance and sensitization. The dominant paradigm for studying such context-dependency is based on Pavlovian conditioning, in which a distinctive environment serves as a conditioned stimulus. Context dependency is demonstrated when tolerance or sensitization is expressed only in the environment in which the drug was given chronically. An alternative paradigm for studying context-dependency is to manipulate the contingencies of reinforcement ope

Current views on obesity.

Although the disorders associated with obesity have been extensively studied, little attention has been paid to the fact that obesity is itself a chronic disease. This misunderstanding of the nature of obesity has contributed to the stigmatization of obese persons and to the use of inappropriate or inadequate treatment regimens. Although the etiology of obesity is still unclear, genetic, metabolic, and social factors are all believed to play a role in its development and progression. Behavioral therapy, exercise, very-low-calorie diets, drug therapy, and surgery affect the treatment of obesity

Comparison of the time course of the anorectic effect of fenfluramine and amphetamine with drug levels in blood.

Time courses of the suppressive effects on food intake of (+)-amphetamine and (plus or minus)-fenfluramine in deprived rats were found to be different. Amphetamine displayed a potent initial action which rapidly decayed, and this behavioural effect was consistent with the measured blood concentration of amphetamine which showed a peak at 1 h followed by rapid clearance. For fenfluramine, the initial suppression of eating was maintained over several hours and was, for the first hour, related to the blood concentration of fenfluramine but later to an active metabolite, norfenfluramine. The study
