Mathematical assessment of control strategies against the spread of MERS-CoV in humans and camels in Saudi Arabia.

A new mathematical model for the transmission dynamics and control of the Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (MERS), a respiratory virus caused by MERS-CoV coronavirus (and primarily spread to humans by dromedary camels) that first emerged out of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in 2012, was designed and used to study the transmission dynamics of the disease in a human-camel population within the KSA. Rigorous analysis of the model, which was fitted and cross-validated using the observed MERS-CoV data for the KSA, showed that its disease-free equilibrium was locally asymptotically stable whe

[Rt or RDt, that is the question!].

The article compares two of the most followed indices in the monitoring of COVID-19 epidemic cases: the Rt and the RDt indices. The first was disseminated by the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) and the second, which is more usable due to the lower difficulty of calculation and the availability of data, was adopted by various regional and local institutions. The rationale for the Rt index refers to that for the R0 index, the basic reproduction number, which is used by infectivologists as a measure of contagiousness of a given infectious agent in a completely susceptible population. Transmission dynamics of cholera with hyperinfectious and hypoinfectious vibrios: mathematical modelling and control strategies.

Cholera is a common infectious disease caused by Vibrio cholerae, which has different infectivity. In this paper, we propose a cholera model with hyperinfectious and hypoinfectious vibrios, in which both human-to-human and environment-to-human transmissions are considered. By analyzing the characteristic equations, the local stability of disease-free and endemic equilibria is established. By using Lyapunov functionals and LaSalle's invariance principle, it is verified that the global threshold dynamics of the model can be completely determined by the basic reproduction number. Who is the infector? Epidemic models with symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.

What role do asymptomatically infected individuals play in the transmission dynamics? There are many diseases, such as norovirus and influenza, where some infected hosts show symptoms of the disease while others are asymptomatically infected, i.e. do not show any symptoms. The current paper considers a class of epidemic models following an SEIR (Susceptible  →  Exposed  →  Infectious  →  Recovered) structure that allows for both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases. The following question is addressed: what fraction ρ of those individuals getting infected are infected by symptomatic (asymptomati

Spread, circulation, and evolution of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus.

UNLABELLED: The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was first documented in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in 2012 and, to date, has been identified in 180 cases with 43% mortality. In this study, we have determined the MERS-CoV evolutionary rate, documented genetic variants of the virus and their distribution throughout the Arabian peninsula, and identified the genome positions under positive selection, important features for monitoring adaptation of MERS-CoV to human transmission and for identifying the source of infections. Respiratory samples from confirmed KSA MERS

The failure of R0.

The basic reproductive ratio, R(0), is one of the fundamental concepts in mathematical biology. It is a threshold parameter, intended to quantify the spread of disease by estimating the average number of secondary infections in a wholly susceptible population, giving an indication of the invasion strength of an epidemic: if R(0) < 1, the disease dies out, whereas if R(0) > 1, the disease persists. R(0) has been widely used as a measure of disease strength to estimate the effectiveness of control measures and to form the backbone of disease-management policy. However, in almost every aspect tha

A hypothesis for explaining single outbreaks (like the Black Death in European cities) of vector-borne infections.

We propose a mechanism by which single outbreaks of vector-borne infections can happen even when the value of the basic reproduction number, R(0), of the infection is below one. With this hypothesis we have shown that dynamical models simulations demonstrate that the arrival of a relatively small (with respect to the host population) number of infected vectors can trigger a short-lived epidemic but with a huge number of cases. These episodes are characterized by a sudden outbreak in a previously virgin area that last from weeks to a few months, and then disappear without leaving vestiges. The

Sustainable Coexistence with Infectious Diseases: A Behavioral Feedback Model Driven by Resource Accessibility under Static-Dynamic Optimal Control.

This study develops a behavior-disease feedback model grounded in imitation dynamics to analyze optimal long-term epidemic coexistence strategies from both static and dynamic perspectives. Analytical findings reveal that the stability of the system depends on both the basic reproduction number and the behavioral threshold, with the latter and risk attention jointly determining optimal static intervention intensity. Data-driven analyses of influenza (Shanxi) and COVID-19 (Shanghai) show that adaptive public behavior can drive recurrent epidemic waves. In dynamic optimization simulations involvi

Mathematical modeling of the 2023 dengue outbreak in the Centre Region of Burkina Faso: Parameter estimation and assessment of control strategies.

Mathematical models are valuable tools in the fight against infectious diseases such as dengue. However, their use to guide public health strategies in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Burkina Faso, remains limited due to the scarcity of locally calibrated models. Moreover, no study has yet applied the African vulture optimization algorithm (AVOA) for dengue parameters in this context. In this study, we develop a compartmental model to evaluate the impact of control strategies on the 2023 dengue epidemic in the Centre Region of Burkina Faso. The model combines a susceptible-infected (SI) st

Markovian Approach for Exploring Competitive Diseases with Heterogeneity-Evidence from COVID-19 and Influenza in China.

Due to the complex interactions between multiple infectious diseases, the spreading of diseases in human bodies can vary when people are exposed to multiple sources of infection at the same time. Typically, there is heterogeneity in individuals' responses to diseases, and the transmission routes of different diseases also vary. Therefore, this paper proposes an SIS disease spreading model with individual heterogeneity and transmission route heterogeneity under the simultaneous action of two competitive infectious diseases. We derive the theoretical epidemic spreading threshold using quenched m

Multiple infection leads to backward bifurcation for a schistosomiasis model.

Based on years of experience in schistosomiasis prevention and treatment, one of the typical features of schistosomiasis is multiple infection of a human host by parasites, which may dramatically a ect the host's infectivity. In this paper we establish a schistosomiasis model that takes into consideration multiple infection by separating humans with single and multiple infectious. The disease free equilibrium is shown to be globally asymptotically stable under certain condition. The model analysis suggests that a backward bifurcation may occur if the transmission rate from multiple infected hu

Modeling the impact of climate change on the dynamics of Rift Valley Fever.

A deterministic SEIR model of rift valley fever (RVF) with climate change parameters was considered to compute the basic reproduction number ℛ 0 and investigate the impact of temperature and precipitation on ℛ 0. To study the effect of model parameters to ℛ 0, sensitivity and elasticity analysis of ℛ 0 were performed. When temperature and precipitation effects are not considered, ℛ 0 is more sensitive to the expected number of infected Aedes spp. due to one infected livestock and more elastic to the expected number of infected livestock due to one infected Aedes spp. When climatic data are use

Different types of backward bifurcations due to density-dependent treatments.

A set of deterministic SIS models with density-dependent treatments are studied to understand the disease dynamics when different treatment strategies are applied. Qualitative analyses are carried out in terms of general treatment functions. It has become customary that a backward bifurcation leads to bistable dynamics. However, this study finds that finds that bistability may not be an option at all; the disease-free equilibrium could be globally stable when there is a backward bifurcation. Furthermore, when a backward bifurcation occurs, the fashion of bistability could be the coexistence of

Using routine surveillance data to estimate the epidemic potential of emerging zoonoses: application to the emergence of US swine origin influenza A H3N2v virus.

BACKGROUND: Prior to emergence in human populations, zoonoses such as SARS cause occasional infections in human populations exposed to reservoir species. The risk of widespread epidemics in humans can be assessed by monitoring the reproduction number R (average number of persons infected by a human case). However, until now, estimating R required detailed outbreak investigations of human clusters, for which resources and expertise are not always available. Additionally, existing methods do not correct for important selection and under-ascertainment biases. Here, we present simple estimation me

The type-reproduction number of sexually transmitted infections through heterosexual and vertical transmission.

Multiple sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have threatened human health for centuries. Most STIs spread not only through sexual (horizontal) transmission but also through mother-to-child (vertical) transmission. In a previous work (Ito et al. 2019), we studied a simple model including heterosexual and mother-to-child transmission and proposed a formulation of the basic reproduction number over generations. In the present study, we improved the model to take into account some factors neglected in the previous work: adult mortality from infection, infant mortality caused by mother-to-child

Assessing yellow fever outbreak potential and implications for vaccine strategy.

Yellow fever (YF), a vector-borne viral hemorrhagic fever, is endemic in tropical regions of Africa and South America, with large vaccination programmes being used for control. However, significant outbreaks have occurred in recent years. Data on infection rates and seroprevalence is often sparse, requiring robust mathematical models to estimate the burden of yellow fever. In particular, modelling is required to estimate the risk of outbreaks and inform policy decisions regarding the targeting of vaccination. We present a dynamic, stochastic model of YF transmission which uses environmental co

Modeling, analysis and numerical simulation of chronic myeloid leukemia.

Leukemia is a blood cancer characterized by the abnormal proliferation of blood cells and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a type of leukemia disease that is noted by inappropriate increase of leukemic stem cell in hematopoietic niche. Mathematical modeling gives a strict conceptualization of disease development and the assessment of possible therapeutic reactions. This paper introduces the comparative study and analysis of the three known models of CML including Niche competition, Niche independent, and partial Niche dependence (PND). In case of every model, we determine the equilibrium poin

Transmission Dynamics of Mpox in Peru During the 2022 Outbreak.

In July 2022, mpox was declared an international public health emergency because of a surge in cases across Europe and America. This study assessed transmission dynamics and factors associated with hospitalization during the 2022 mpox outbreak in Peru. We performed a cross-sectional study using the Surveillance System of the National Center of Epidemiology, Prevention, and Disease Control (CDC-Peru) data. We estimated the basic reproduction number (R0), effective reproduction number (Rt), and the duration of the outbreak phases. We conducted mathematical modeling of the outbreak and estimated

Understanding HIV/AIDS dynamics: insights from CD4+T cells, antiretroviral treatment, and country-specific analysis.

In this article, we present a mathematical model for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), taking into account the number of CD4+T cells and antiretroviral treatment. This model is developed based on the susceptible, infected, treated, AIDS (SITA) framework, wherein the infected and treated compartments are divided based on the number of CD4+T cells. Additionally, we consider the possibility of treatment failure, which can exacerbate the condition of the treated individual. Initially, we analyze a simplified HIV/AIDS model without differentiation betwee

A mathematical model for HIV dynamics with multiple infections: implications for immune escape.

Multiple infections enable the recombination of different strains, which may contribute to viral diversity. How multiple infections affect the competition dynamics between the two types of strains, the wild and the immune escape mutant, remains poorly understood. This study develops a novel mathematical model that includes the two strains, two modes of viral infection, and multiple infections. For the representative double-infection case, the reproductive numbers are derived and global stabilities of equilibria are obtained via the Lyapunov direct method and theory of limiting systems.
