Alcohol poisoning and duodenum ulcer mortality in Russia, 1965-2005.

BACKGROUND: Peptic ulcer disease is a common clinical problem. Binge drinking has been shown to increase the risk of ulcer at the individual level. PURPOSE: To estimate the aggregate level effect of binge drinking on duodenum ulcer mortality rate. METHOD: Trends in age-adjusted, sex-specific fatal alcohol poisoning and duodenum ulcer mortality rates in Russia from 1965 to 2005 were analyzed employing an ARIMA analysis in order to asses a bivariate relationship between the two time series. RESULTS: Time series analysis indicate the presence of statistically significant association between th

Hazardous alcohol use, sexual behavior, and recent and undiagnosed HIV across 11 Eastern and Southern African countries.

OBJECTIVES: Quantify hazardous alcohol prevalence among individuals at risk of acquiring HIV and its association with sexual behaviors, and recent and undiagnosed HIV in 11 Eastern and Southern African countries. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of 16 nationally-representative household surveys (2015-2023). METHODS: We included sexually active individuals aged ≥15 years. Alcohol use patterns were classified using the AUDIT-C (non-drinkers; low-risk drinkers; hazardous non-binge drinkers; hazardous binge drinkers). Outcomes included sexual risk behaviors, recent HIV infection, and undiagnosed HIV i

Alcohol Misuse Among Youth Living With and at High Risk for Acquiring HIV During the COVID-19 Stay-at-Home Orders: A Study in Los Angeles and New Orleans.

BACKGROUND: To slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, governments across the globe instituted stay-at-home orders leading to increased stress and social isolation. Not surprisingly, alcohol sales increased during this period. While most studies primarily focused on alcohol consumption among college students or adults, this study investigates alcohol misuse among marginalized youth in the USA. We examined risk factors associated with hazardous alcohol use and binge drinking including risk behaviors, life stressors and demographic characteristics. METHODS: In October 2020, youth living with or

Alcohol consumption among HIV-positive pregnant women in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: prevalence and correlates.

BACKGROUND: HIV-positive pregnant women who drink put their children at risk of both HIV and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. The province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has the highest prevalence of HIV in South Africa, but has not before been considered an area of high alcohol consumption among women. This paper analyzes a large sample of HIV+ pregnant women in KZN to examine alcohol consumption in that population. METHODS: Data came from assessments of women enrolled in Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission programs at 8 clinics in KZN. Descriptive statistics and logistic regressions were us

Unhealthy behavior clustering and mental health status in United States college students.

Objective: Examine the association of health risk behavior clusters with mental health status among US college students. Participants: 105,781 US college students who completed the Spring 2011 National College Health Assessment. Methods: We utilized the latent class analysis to determine clustering of health risk behaviors (alcohol binge drinking, cigarette/marijuana use, insufficient physical activity, and fruit/vegetable consumption), and chi-square and ANOVA analyses to examine associations between the class membership and mental health (mental health diagnoses, psychological symptoms, and

Magnesium levels in alcohol-treated rodents using different consumption paradigms.

To develop an animal model system that examines magnesium (Mg) deficiency associated with chronic alcohol consumption, we tried to reproduce a Mg-deficient state, caused by alcohol consumption, in rats using different alcohol consumption experimental designs. Serum and bone samples were collected from 2-day binge (high BACs achieved by intubating a 5% ethanol solution 2 consecutive days/week), 5-day binge, moderate drinking, and adolescent (4-week-old rats, equivalent to late teen/early adult humans) alcohol consumption projects. Mg content was measured using color spectrophotometry. Alcohol-f

Substance use homophily among geosocial networking application using gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

Geosocial networking applications (GSN apps) represent important virtual contexts in which gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) seek affiliation. These apps allow users to create and view public profiles, send photos, and text messages, and connect with other users based on shared interests and geographic proximity. The present study examined substance use homophily among a sample of 295 MSM recruited via a popular GSN app. Comparisons of social network members met via GSN app versus elsewhere and associations between both individual and network characteristics and recent b

Alcohol use among pregnant and nonpregnant women of childbearing age - United States, 1991-2005.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a risk factor for poor birth outcomes, including fetal alcohol syndrome, birth defects, and low birth weight. In the United States, the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome is estimated at 0.5-2.0 cases per 1,000 births, but other fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are believed to occur approximately three times as often as fetal alcohol syndrome. The 2005 U.S. Surgeon General's advisory on alcohol use in pregnancy, advises women who are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant to abstain from using alcohol. Binge drinking is particularly harmful

Changes in alcohol consumption among Belgian adults participating in the internet-based one-month-abstinence campaign 'Tournée Minérale'.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Temporary abstinence campaigns (TAC) are a promising approach to reduce alcohol consumption. This study examined changes in (at-risk) alcohol consumption and determinants of alcohol consumption among Belgian adults participating in the Tournée Minérale Campaign (TMC, Belgian TAC). In addition, moderating effects of age, sex, education level, successfully refraining from alcohol during TMC, risk drinking, drinking levels and binge drinking were investigated. METHODS: TMC is a fully automated mass media prevention campaign challenging Belgian adults to refrain from alc

Current alcohol use and risk for hypomania in male students: generally more or more binging?

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders and bipolar disorder are highly comorbid. Some studies suggest that alcohol abuse or misuse might even precede the onset of bipolar disorder, but few studies have looked at the daily drinking pattern beyond diagnostic categories. We therefore examined if risk for hypomania is associated with a specific drinking pattern when using a calendar-based interview. METHOD: A total of 120 students who completed the Hypomanic Personality Scale were independently interviewed with the FORM 90 to assess daily drinking and the Composite Diagnostic Interview to derive Diagn

Maternal substance use in pregnancy: Differential prediction by childhood adversity subtypes.

Substance use in pregnancy, including alcohol use, drug use, or smoking, is associated with poor health outcomes for both the mother and her unborn child. Building on previous research that has examined the cumulative impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on maternal binge drinking and alcohol use in pregnancy, the current study sought to examine the association between maternal ACEs and substance use in pregnancy more broadly, including alcohol use, binge drinking, smoking, and drug use. Furthermore, we also examined how different adversity subtypes, including sexual abuse, family vi

Adverse childhood events and current depressive symptoms among women in Hawaii: 2010 BRFSS, Hawaii.

Research on the association between adverse childhood events (ACEs) and depression among women in Hawaii is scarce. ACEs have been linked to unfavorable health behaviors such as smoking and binge drinking which are more prevalent in the state compared to the US overall. The concomitant presence of ACEs with smoking or binge drinking may explain the excess depression prevalence in Hawaii compared to the national average. Using data of women residing in the state (2010 Hawaii Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey), we examined the association between ACEs count or type (household dys

Model-Based and Model-Free Control Predicts Alcohol Consumption Developmental Trajectory in Young Adults: A 3-Year Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: A shift from goal-directed toward habitual control has been associated with alcohol dependence. Whether such a shift predisposes to risky drinking is not yet clear. We investigated how goal-directed and habitual control at age 18 predict alcohol use trajectories over the course of 3 years. METHODS: Goal-directed and habitual control, as informed by model-based (MB) and model-free (MF) learning, were assessed with a two-step sequential decision-making task during functional magnetic resonance imaging in 146 healthy 18-year-old men. Three-year alcohol use developmental trajectories

Perceived parental alcohol problems and drinking patterns in youth: A cross-sectional study of 69,030 secondary education students in Denmark.

The aim of the study was to examine whether young people with parental alcohol problems have different drinking patterns than those without parental alcohol problems. Further, we examined whether the association between parental alcohol problems and young people's drinking patterns differed depending on the gender of the child and the parent, and whether more severe parental alcohol problems and cohabitation with the parent with alcohol problems was associated with earlier and heavier drinking patterns. Data came from the Danish National Youth Study 2014, a web-based national survey. 75,025 hi

Physician advice to adolescents about drinking and other health behaviors.

BACKGROUND: This report assessed the proportion of US 10th graders (average age, 16) who saw a physician in the past year and were asked and given advice about their drinking. We hypothesized that advice would vary by whether students were asked about drinking and their drinking, bingeing, and drunkenness frequency. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 10th graders in 2010 (N = 2519) were asked their past 30-day frequency of drinking, bingeing, and intoxication and whether, during their last medical examination, their drinking was explored and they received advice about alcohol's ri
