Effect of Trypanosoma vivax infection on body temperature, feed intake, and metabolic rate of West African dwarf goats.

Thirty-two mature dwarf goats weighing between 16 and 30 kg (22.7 +/- 3.7, SD) were used to study the effect of Trypanosoma vivax infection on rectal temperature (RT), feed intake (DMI), and metabolic rate. Sixteen of the goats were infected intravenously with 14 X 10(6) T. vivax each; the 16 others served as controls. Animals were fed at about 1.1 times maintenance. Heat production was measured from 1 wk preinfection to 6 wk postinfection. From data on successive 9-min periods, heat production was calculated per 24-h period and separately for 0700 to 2000 (day period) and for 2000 to 0700 (ni

Testicular suspension: effect on testicular function.

The present communication studies the testicular function during suspension of the testicle to the scrotal neck. The material consisted of 28 dogs: 20 test dogs and 8 controls. In the 20 test dogs, the 2 testicles were suspended to the skin at the scrotal neck by 2-3 silk stitches. After one year, the testiculo-scrotal suspension was released. During testicular suspension, there was significant drop in the scrotal-rectal temperature difference. Semen quality showed gradual deterioration so that by the 12th month, 80% of the test dogs were azoospermic. There was a significant drop of serum test

Effects of cold, short day and melatonin on thermogenesis, body weight and reproductive organs in Alaskan red-backed voles.

This study examined whether cold, short day or melatonin causes reproductive regression and stimulates nonshivering thermogenesis in a subarctic rodent Clethrionomys rutilus. Red-backed voles born and raised at 23 degrees C and 22 h light per day (LD 22:2) at Fairbanks, Alaska (65 degrees N) were exposed in one of six groups to: 1) long day (LD 22:2), 23 degrees C, injected daily with melatonin or saline 2 h before lights out, 2) long day, 3 degrees C, injected daily with melatonin or saline, 3) short day (LD 8:16), 23 degrees C or 3 degrees C. Voles were tested for nonshivering thermogenesis

Hyperthermic peritoneal perfusion system in canines.

The thermal infusion filtration system was designed to manage malignant effusions and treat metastatic cancers of the intracavitary serosa. Hyperthermia, chemotherapy, and cell and debris filtration were administered by a dynamic fluid flow. Preclinical evaluations of surgical procedure, temperature studies, fluid dynamics, and physiology were carried out in 15 dogs (17.2 to 25.4 kg) with peritoneal perfusion at 41 degrees C and 10 liters/hr flow. Results suggest that the dynamics of flow achieves total intracavitary equilibrium in 7 min. The time essential to elevate animal body mass temperat

Does copper contamination change thermotaxis of the soil arthropod Folsomia candida (Collembola)?

Behavioural thermoregulation (thermotaxis) is essential for soil invertebrates to evade thermal extremes in terrestrial environments. Extensive and continuous use of copper (Cu) based products has led to elevated Cu concentration in soils across the globe and in some areas reaching concentrations that are hazardous to soil invertebrates. We hypothesised that environmental stressors, for example, exposure to heavy metals may compromise the adaptive behavioural thermoregulation of organisms, but very little is known of such interactions. In this study, we chose Cu as a model toxicant and investi

Physical versus pharmacological counter-measures. Studies on febrile rabbits.

128 experiments were carried out on febrile rabbits at air temperatures of 8, 18, 24 and 30 degrees C in order to analyze the thermoregulatory effects and mechanisms of physical and/or pharmacological counter-measures. Fever was achieved by injection of 0.1 micrograms Salmonella typhi endotoxin (LPS)/kg into an ear vein. As the pharmacological counter-measure, injections of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) into an ear vein were chosen. For the physical counter-measure, cooling thermodes (5 degrees C) were constructed for the abdominal skin, for the ear and for the rectum. ASA injections had no effec

Effect of spinal cord injury on the skin temperature of different regions of interest during a graded exercise test in a moderate temperature environment.

The gradient between core and skin temperature is a relevant factor in heat exchange between the human body and the environment, but people with spinal cord injury (SCI), due to their autonomic dysfunction, have impaired mechanisms that condition skin temperature response. This study aimed to determine how SCI affects skin temperature response in different ROIs during a graded exercise test in a moderate temperature environment. 32 participants were included in the study [SCI (N = 16); Non-SCI (N = 16)]. A graded exercise test was conducted on an arm crank ergometer, with a staged duration of

Cold-water recovery between bouts of simulated rugby sevens matches in the heat.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cold-water immersion (CWI) between consecutive bouts of simulated rugby seven's matches on performance, physiology and perception. Using a randomised crossover counterbalanced design, 10 male recreational team-sport athletes completed two trials involving two 14 min simulated self-paced intermittent-sprint protocol (ISP) bouts with a 45 min recovery between each bout including a 15 min recovery intervention. Participants completed resting measures, 15 m sprints and vertical jumps (VJ) followed by the first ISP (ISP1) in a hot environment.

Thermoregulation and Hydration Dynamics in a 160-km Ultra-Endurance Race in a Tropical Environment: A Field Study on 80 Runners.

PURPOSE: This study investigated thermoregulation and hydration dynamics in 80 runners (33 women, 41.3%; 47 men, 58.7%) during a 160-km ultra-endurance race with 9400 m of elevation gain in a tropical environment, where ambient temperatures ranged from 10.2 °C to 28.3 °C and relative humidity varied between 35 and 100%. METHODS: Core temperature (Tcore; measured via ingestible telemetric capsules), body mass, fluid intake, and environmental conditions were recorded at key checkpoints. A linear mixed-effects model was used. RESULTS: Mean Tcore was 37.9 ± 0.3°C (range 36.9-38.8 °C), with a pea

Select panicogenic drugs and stimuli induce consistent increases in tail skin flushes and decreases in core body temperature.

Panic attacks (PAs) are episodes of intense fear or discomfort that are accompanied by a variety of both psychological and somatic symptoms. Panic induction in preclinical models (e.g. rats) has largely been assayed through flight and avoidance behavioral tests and cardiorespiratory activity. Yet, the literature pertaining to PAs shows that thermal sensations (hot flushes/heat sensations and chills) are also a common symptom during PAs in humans. Considering that temperature alterations are objectively measurable in rodents, we hypothesized that select panicogenic drugs and stimuli induce cons

Effects of intravenous tryptophan infusion on thermoregulation in steers exposed to acute heat stress.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of tryptophan (TRP) supply on the thermoregulatory responses via brain serotonin (5-HT) in cattle. In period 1, 12 Holstein steers were kept under a constant room temperature (22°C) and were administered the intravenous (i.v.) infusion of saline or TRP (38.5 mg/kg/2 h). Changes in rectal temperature (RT), 5-HT concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and other factors involved in thermoregulation were measured. In period 2, the steers received the same treatments as in period 1; however, the room temperature was elevated from 22°C to 33

Regional skin temperature, heat flow and conductance in preterm neonates nursed in low and in neutral environmental temperature.

The changes of regional dry heat loss and skin temperature in 15 healthy preterm babies, 8 with a gestational age (GA) of 33-36 weeks and 7 with a GA of 28-31 weeks, were studied under controlled conditions at environmental temperatures ranging from 29.5 to 34.0 degrees C. In both groups of babies the skin temperature for all body regions followed the changes in operative temperatures. Regional dry heat losses also closely followed the external temperature gradient. In the 33-36 weeks GA neonates the regional changes in thermal conductance (index of cutaneous blood flow) indicated that only th

Prevention of ischemia-induced cerebral hypothermia by controlling the environmental temperature.

Regulation of brain temperature during and after cerebral ischemia plays an important role in the evolution of neuronal damage. Therefore, it is essential to maintain brain temperature at 37 degrees C during and after the ischemic insult. To get information about brain temperature during the experimental procedure, researchers in previous works have made various attempts to correlate between brain and body temperature during and after ischemia. In the present study, brain temperature was measured when ischemia was performed either at 30 degrees C or at 20 degrees C environmental temperature. F

Long-range correlations in rectal temperature fluctuations of healthy infants during maturation.

BACKGROUND: Control of breathing, heart rate, and body temperature are interdependent in infants, where instabilities in thermoregulation can contribute to apneas or even life-threatening events. Identifying abnormalities in thermoregulation is particularly important in the first 6 months of life, where autonomic regulation undergoes critical development. Fluctuations in body temperature have been shown to be sensitive to maturational stage as well as system failure in critically ill patients. We thus aimed to investigate the existence of fractal-like long-range correlations, indicative of tem

Hypoxia gradually augments metabolic and thermoperceptual responsiveness to repeated whole-body cold stress in humans.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? In male lowlanders, does hypoxia modulate thermoregulatory effector responses during repeated whole-body cold stress encountered in a single day? What is the main finding and its importance? A ∼10 h sustained exposure to hypoxia appears to mediate a gradual upregulation of endogenous heat production, preventing the progressive hypothermic response prompted by serial cold stimuli. Also, hypoxia progressively degrades mood, and compounds the perceived thermal discomfort, and sensations of fatigue and coldness. ABSTRACT: We examined wheth
