Thoracic units perform plastic operations on the bronchi in 5-10% of all radical interventions for lung cancer. This figure was 7.5% at our unit. A total of 184 patients were operated on, with a mortality rate of 9.7% (18 patients died). Lobectomy with circulatory resection of the main bronchus is the optimal plastic operation on the bronchi in lung cancer. Long-term results following bronchial resection and plastic repair suggest the oncological rationale for these operations. These operations make it possible to preserve functionally significant lung tissue, thus assuring the high quality of

INTRODUCTION: Dyspnea due to tracheal invasion by malignant tumors is a common oncological emergency that is difficult to manage, and a common cause of death among patients with advanced cancer. Bronchoscopy-guided intervention therapy under conventional ventilation is very risky for patients with severe central airway stenosis. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides strong cardiopulmonary support, but is rarely used in bronchoscopy-guided interventional therapy.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient had advanced esophageal cancer with metastases to the trachea and left and right main br

BACKGROUND: Despite the prevailing assumption of "smooth trachea walls" in respiratory fluid dynamics research, recent investigations have demonstrated that cartilaginous rings in the trachea and main bronchi have a significant effect on the flow behavior and in particle deposition. However, there is not enough detailed information about the underlying physics of the interaction between the cartilage rings and the flow.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study presents an experimental observation of a simplified Weibel-based model of the human trachea and bronchi with cartilaginous rings. A transpar

Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of pulmonary diseases, which leads to lung parenchyma destruction (emphysema) and obstructive bronchiolitis occurring in both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Inflammation is strongly correlated with low intracellular cAMP levels and increase in specific cAMP hydrolyzing activity. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of the cyclic phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4) in human lung and to determine the effects of NCS 613, a new PDE4 inhibitor, on lung inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. High cAMP-PDE activities were

INTRODUCTION: The mortality of the Hungarian population is very unfavourable in relation to other European countries. Mortality from malignant diseases is the second most frequent cause of death in both sexes. The most frequent localisation of cancer is that of the bronchi and the lungs, followed by colorectal, breast and oral cavity cancers.
AIM: Of the publication was to demonstrate the spatial distribution of mortality from malignant diseases of all sites, bronchi and the lungs, as well as mortality from cancer of the thyroid gland and leukaemias, and to evaluate the possible impact of the

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the computed tomographic (CT) features of subcarinal air cysts, which may be related to bronchial diverticula.
METHOD: Seven patients with subcarinal air cysts were retrospectively identified. The following CT features were assessed: location, size, and marginal characteristics of subcarinal air cysts; number, location, and size of communication between the air cyst and bronchi if present; presence of bronchial diverticula in any other location; presence of the pulmonary lesion; and interval change of subcarinal air cysts on follow-up CT.

Tachykinin-containing sensory axons originating from the cervical vagal nerves and the first several pairs of thoracic spinal nerves are involved in neurogenic inflammation evoked by capsaicin in the bronchial tree. Unilateral degeneration of the cervical vagal trunk by surgical lesion inhibits neurogenic inflammation in the ipsilateral bronchial airways. The vagal trunk has two main branches, the thoracic vagus nerve and recurrent laryngeal nerve in the thorax. The main purpose of this study was to determine whether the thoracic vagus nerve or recurrent laryngeal nerve was significantly invol

Luteinizing hormone (LH) immunoreactivity was detected in the lung and stomach of chick embryos by the immunoperoxidase staining technique using specific antiserum to chicken LH. Immunoreactive LH (ir-LH) cells first appeared in the primordial cells of the epithelial layer of lung bud and foregut as well as of Rathke s pouch in the 3-day-old embryo, Hamburger and Hamilton stage 21. Ir-LH cells increased in number with advancing age of embryos in the lung, stomach, and pituitary gland. In the lung of 7-day-old embryos, stage 31, the ir-LH cells were distributed in the epithelium of primary, sec

Tracheobronchomalacia is a weakness of the trachea and bronchi due to abnormal cartilage and muscular support leading to airway obstruction. We report a case of an adult former smoker without pulmonary symptoms who underwent robotic-assisted laparoscopic cystectomy in the steep Trendelenburg position. After repeated episodes of hypoxemia, bronchoscopic examination revealed collapse of the distal trachea and bronchi, supporting a diagnosis of tracheobronchomalacia. Tracheomalacia is an underdiagnosed condition in patients with a smoking history and may mimic other obstructive diseases. The anes

The resin casts of the respiratory and vascular systems in pigeon lung were examined using a scanning electron microscope. The primary bronchi branched to form many secondary bronchi that anastomosed with each other via the parabronchi. Numerous infundibula protruded from the parabronchi via the atria and ramified into the air capillaries. The pulmonary artery entered into the lung and branched into three vessels that coursed the interparabronchial parts. The intraparabronchial arterioles penetrated the gas-exchange tissue to form the anastomosing networks of blood capillaries. The observation

A 4-day-old female Holstein calf presented with a large-sized, protruding mass in its back, at birth. Radiography identified the deformed spinous process in the second and third lumbar vertebras, suggesting spina bifida. Ultrasonography of the back mass revealed anechoic bronchi-like structures and large vessels with rich blood flow running parallel within the homogenous echogenic mass's parenchyma. Doppler ultrasonography also revealed pulsatile vessels entering into the deeper side of the transverse process of the lumbar vertebras at the right-sided base of the protruding mass. These imaging

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome (MKS) or congenital tracheobronchomegaly is a rare disorder characterized by marked dilatation of the trachea and main bronchi, bronchiectasis, and recurrent respiratory tract infections. The etiology of this disorder is uncertain and the clinical presentation is variable. The diagnosis is usually made based on the characteristic computed tomography (CT) scan findings. This report describes a case of a 43-year-old man presenting with persistent cough and recurrent lower respiratory tract infections since childhood associated with copious amounts of purulent sputum, diffic

Bronchiectasis is diagnosed in humans using multiple computed tomography (CT) criteria, the most important being dilatation of the bronchi. The most widely used criterion for detection of bronchial dilatation is a bronchial lumen to pulmonary artery diameter (bronchoarterial [BA]) ratio >1.0. No studies have been performed to determine the BA ratio in normal dogs. Thoracic CT images of 24 dogs without clinical pulmonary disease were reviewed. The BA ratio of the lobar bronchi of the left cranial (cranial and caudal parts), right cranial, right middle, left caudal, and right caudal lung lobes w

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is an acute life-threatening condition, characterized by erosion of the mucous membranes, extensive detachment of the epidermis, and severe constitutional symptoms. Pulmonary complications of TEN are reported as rare, but are one of the most common causes of death. Our report focuses on an unusual case of toxic epidermal necrolysis which showed multiple bronchial obliteration during the chronic phase of the disease. Biopsied tissue of the obliterated bronchi demonstrated non-specific granulation. To improve the obliterated ventilatory function, we tried to reop

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical values of 16-slice spiral low-dose CT (LDCT) in the diagnosis of the tracheobronchial stenosis and obstruction.
METHODS: Both 16-slice spiral LDCT and fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) were used to examine the tracheobronchial stenosis and obstruction in 28 patients. With the FB findings as the gold standards, we calculated the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 16-slice spiral LDCT in the diagnosis of the tracheobronchial stenosis and obstruction.
RESULTS: The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 16-slice spiral LDCT were 91.3%, 97.6%, and 97.9%
