Gut microbiota and calcium balance.

Microorganisms living on the surface and inside the human body play an important role in the physiological activities of the human body. The largest microecosystem in the human body is the gut microbiome. Calcium disorders are found in many diseases. For example, patients with chronic renal insufficiency present with secondary hyperparathyroidism, which is caused by a calcium imbalance in the body. In addition, calcium dysregulation may affect lipid metabolism in the liver through the calmodulator pathway, leading to cirrhosis, etc. Currently, a considerable number of probiotics have been prov

Calcium Carbonate Mineralization of Microalgae.

Biological substrates catalyze the nucleation and growth of sparingly soluble salts however, the underlying mechanism is largely unknown. In the present study, the growth of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), on Acutodesmus obliquus (AO) microalgae was investigated. The test microalgae favored the growth of CaCO3 from solutions supersaturated with respect to calcite (7.94 < SRcalcite < 104.71). The precipitation of calcite on AO was not preceded by measurable induction times, and the rates of calcite crystal growth were higher for higher microalgae cell concentrations. The presence of the microalgae c

Migraine: Calcium Channels and Glia.

Migraine is a common neurological disease that affects about 11% of the adult population. The disease is divided into two main clinical subtypes: migraine with aura and migraine without aura. According to the neurovascular theory of migraine, the activation of the trigeminovascular system (TGVS) and the release of numerous neuropeptides, including calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are involved in headache pathogenesis. TGVS can be activated by cortical spreading depression (CSD), a phenomenon responsible for the aura. The mechanism of CSD, stemming in part from aberrant interactions betwe

Calcium and Bone Metabolism Indices.

Calcium and inorganic phosphate are of critical importance for many body functions, thus the regulations of their plasma concentrations are tightly controlled by the concerted actions of reabsorption/excretion in the kidney, absorption in the intestines, and exchange from bone, the major reservoir for calcium and phosphate in the body. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) control calcium homeostasis, whereas PTH, 1,25(OH)2D, and bone-derived fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF 23) control phosphate homeostasis. Hypoparathyroidism can cause hypocalcemia and hyperphosp

Nuclear calcium in cardiac myocytes.

Calcium (Ca) is a universal second messenger involved in the regulation of various cellular processes, including electrical signaling, contraction, secretion, memory, gene transcription, and cell death. In heart, Ca governs cardiomyocyte contraction, is central in electrophysiological properties, and controls major signaling pathway implicated in gene transcription. How cardiomyocytes decode Ca signal to regulate gene expression without interfering with, or being controlled by, "contractile" Ca that floods the entire cytosol during each heartbeat is still elusive. In this review, we summarize

Cardiovascular effects of calcium supplements.

Calcium supplements reduce bone turnover and slow the rate of bone loss. However, few studies have demonstrated reduced fracture incidence with calcium supplements, and meta-analyses show only a 10% decrease in fractures, which is of borderline statistical and clinical significance. Trials in normal older women and in patients with renal impairment suggest that calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. To further assess their safety, we recently conducted a meta-analysis of trials of calcium supplements, and found a 27%-31% increase in risk of myocardial infarction, and

Pharmacology of myocardial calcium-handling.

Disturbed myocardial calcium (Ca(+)) handling is one of the pathophysiologic hallmarks of cardiovascular diseases such as congestive heart failure, cardiac hypertrophy, and certain types of tachyarrhythmias. Pharmacologic treatment of these diseases thus focuses on restoring myocardial Ca(2+) homeostasis by interacting with Ca(2+)-dependent signaling pathways. In this article, we review the currently used pharmacologic agents that are able to restore or maintain myocardial Ca(2+) homeostasis and their mechanism of action as well as emerging new substances.

[Calcium signaling in T lymphocytes].

Calcium signaling is essential for all the functions of T lymphocytes, including those of Th2 cells. Th2 lymphocytes producing interleukins 4, 5 and 13 orchestrate allergic diseases including asthma. T-cell activation induces an influx of Ca(2+) from the external medium through ORAI calcium channels although other calcium channels are likely to be involved. Among them, voltage-gated calcium (Ca(v)1) channels have been reported in some T-cell subsets including Th2 cells. The inhibition of Ca(v)1 channels abrogates T-cell receptor-driven calcium influx and interleukin production by Th2 cells. Fr

Serum calcium level in hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The alterations in extracellular calcium level may influence intracellular calcium level and possibly play a role in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. AIM: The purpose was to find out the association between serum calcium levels and hypertension; and to compare the serum calcium levels between normotensive controls, hypertensive subjects on calcium channel blockers, and hypertensive subjects on antihypertensive medication other than calcium channel blockers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty one individuals including normotensives (n = 12) and hypertensives (n = 19) were en

Acute management of calcium disorders.

Acute management of hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia is an important part of small-animal emergency practice. In addition to hypercalcemia of malignancy and hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D toxicosis is becoming more common in companion animals as new and improved rodenticides and human pharmaceutical preparations (vitamin D analog skin creams) become more available. This article provides complete details regarding the emergency management of life-threatening hypercalcemia with focus on vitamin D intoxication. At the other end of the spectrum, hypocalcemic emergencies, such as periparturient hypoc

Huntington's disease, calcium, and mitochondria.

Huntington's disease (HD) is caused by a mutation that increases the number of CAG repeats in the gene encoding for the protein Huntingtin (Htt). The mutation results in the pathological expansion of the polyQ stretch that is normally present within the N-terminal region of Htt. Even if Htt is ubiquitously expressed in tissues, the changes in the protein finally result in the clinical manifestation of motor and cognitive impairments observed in HD patients. The molecular ethiology of the disease is obscure: a number of cellular and animal models are used as essential tools in experimental appr

Cardiovascular effects of calcium supplementation.

Trials in normal older women and in patients with renal impairment suggest that calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. To further assess their safety, we recently conducted a meta-analysis of trials of calcium supplements, and found a 27-31% increase in risk of myocardial infarction and a 12-20% increase in risk of stroke. These findings are robust because they are based on pre-specified analyses of randomized, placebo-controlled trials and show consistent risk across the trials. The fact that cardiovascular events were not primary endpoints of any of these studies wi

Injectable calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres (Radiesse).

Injectable calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) received FDA approval in 2006 for the correction of facial lipoatrophy and moderate to severe facial wrinkles. This product consists of microspheres of a synthetic bone suspended in a methylcellulose gel matrix. Because the product is thicker than the hyaluronic acids, it is used for the correction of moderate to severe wrinkles, such as deep nasolabial folds. It is also used "off-label" to treat multiple areas of the face, nose, and hands. Radiesse is injected into the subdermal plane, and correction lasts approximately 1 year after injection.
