Caregiving, volunteering or both? Comparing effects on health and mortality using census-based records from almost 250,000 people aged 65 and over.

BACKGROUND: the health impacts of caregiving and volunteering are rarely studied concurrently, despite the potential for both synergies and conflicts. This population-based study examines the association of these activities on health and subsequent mortality. METHOD: a census-based record-linkage study of 244,429 people aged 65 and over, with cohort characteristics, caregiving and volunteering status, and presence of chronic health conditions derived from the Census returns. Mortality risk was assessed over the following 45 months with adjustment for baseline characteristics. RESULTS: caregi

Mortality differences according to living arrangements.

BACKGROUND: Research has revealed mortality differences between marital status groups in different societies and different periods of time. Due to the increase in consensual unions, living alone and other changes in living arrangements, it is necessary to apply a more detailed classification of living arrangements that incorporates partnership situation and household composition. METHODS: We analyse mortality by cause-of-death in the total Finnish population aged 30 or over in 1996-2000. The linked register dataset includes 15.7 million person-years and 210,139 deaths. RESULTS: In the workin

Is the mechanism of supraventricular tachycardia in pediatrics influenced by age, gender or ethnicity?

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) in adults is influenced by age and gender. The purpose of this study was to determine whether age, gender, or ethnicity impact the mechanism of SVT in pediatric patients. METHODS: A search of the Pediatric Electrophysiology Registry identified patients who had undergone a radiofrequency ablation for SVT from 1999 to 2004. Patients were grouped into categories based on the mechanism of tachycardia, age, gender, and ethnicity. US Census data from 2000 served as a benchmark for expected race and gender distributions. RESULTS: The s

Spatial clusters of latent tuberculous infection, Connecticut, 2010-2014.

SETTING: In the United States, tuberculosis (TB) control is increasingly focusing on the identification of persons with latent tuberculous infection (LTBI). OBJECTIVE: To characterize the local epidemiology of LTBI in Connecticut, USA. METHODS: We used spatial analyses 1) to identify census tract-level clusters of reported LTBI and TB disease in Connecticut, 2) to compare persons and populations in clusters with those not in clusters, and 3) to compare persons with LTBI to those with TB disease. RESULTS: Significant census tract-level spatial clusters of LTBI and TB disease were identified.

Isolation, car ownership, and small area variation in incidence of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in children.

To determine whether increased rates of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) which had been reported in isolated areas could be attributed to higher proportions of households owning cars, ecological analysis was performed with electoral wards as area units. Previous data were re-analysed using the proportion of households having no car, taken from the 1981 census of England and Wales, as an additional explanatory factor. A specialist registry of haematopoietic malignancies covering one-third of England and Wales (3270 electoral wards) recorded 438 cases of ALL in children diagnosed 19

Population estimates of sickle cell disease in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: The number of individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the U.S. is unknown. Determination of burden of disease, healthcare issues, and policies is best served by representative estimations of the SCD population. PURPOSE: To update SCD population estimates by using recent U.S. Census and birth-cohort SCD prevalence for at-risk populations as available through the centralized reporting of universal newborn screening for hemoglobinopathies, with an effort to demonstrate the potential effect of early mortality. METHODS: National and state SCD populations were estimated based on

American Indian/Alaskan Native grandparents raising grandchildren: findings from the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey.

This article documents the prevalence and national profile of American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, based on data from the American Community Survey/Census 2000 Supplementary Survey. In 2000 there were estimated to be nearly 53,000 AI/AN grandparent caregivers age 45 and older in the United States. Almost half of the caregiving grandparents had been raising a grandchild for five years or longer. The findings reveal a portrait of grandparents committed to raising their grandchildren despite the fact that many were living in extreme poverty, wit

The burden and trend of diseases and their risk factors in Australia, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive understanding of temporal trends in the disease burden in Australia is lacking, and these trends are required to inform health service planning and improve population health. We explored the burden and trends of diseases and their risk factors in Australia from 1990 to 2019 through a comprehensive analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019. METHODS: In this systematic analysis for GBD 2019, we estimated all-cause mortality using the standardised GBD methodology. Temporal Trends in Cardiovascular Hospital Discharges Following a Mass Chlorine Exposure Event in Graniteville, South Carolina.

Background: On January 6, 2005, a train derailed in Graniteville, South Carolina, releasing nearly 60,000 kg of toxic chlorine gas. The disaster left nine people dead and was responsible for hundreds of hospitalizations and outpatient visits in the subsequent weeks. While chlorine gas primarily affects the respiratory tract, a growing body of evidence suggests that acute exposure may also cause vascular injury and cardiac toxicity. Here, we describe the incidence of cardiovascular hospitalizations among residents of the zip codes most affected by the chlorine gas plume, and compare the inciden

Cancer incidence and survival among Métis adults in Canada: results from the Canadian census follow-up cohort (1992-2009).

BACKGROUND: Métis people are 1 of 3 Aboriginal groups recognized by the Canadian constitution. We estimated site-specific incidence rates and survival for the most common cancers among Métis adults in Canada and compared these with rates among non-Aboriginal adults in Canada. METHODS: We examined responses to the 1991 long-form census, including self-reported Métis ancestry linked to national mortality and cancer databases for followup from 1992 to 2009. We estimated age-standardized incidence rates and 5-year relative survival. We determined relative risk (RR) of cancer among Métis and non-A
