IL-32 regulates trophoblast invasion through miR-205-NFκB-MMP2/9 axis contributing to the pregnancy-induced hypertension†.

Interleukin-32 is a species-specific cytokine that plays an important role in inflammation, cancer, and other diseases; however, its role in reproductive and pregnancy-related diseases remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of interleukin-32 in reproductive and pregnancy-related diseases. Placental tissues from patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension, healthy pregnant women, and trophoblast lines were analysed. Interleukin-32 expression was quantified via polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry, and functional assays were performed after interleukin-32 modula

Hematological survey of common neotropical bat species from Costa Rica.

Although bats are one of the largest groups within the class Mammalia and may carry several zoonotic diseases, basic information about their hematology is limited. In this study, hematocrit (Hct), total white blood cell counts (TWBC; leukocytes), and differential white blood cell counts (DWBC) of free-ranging Neotropical bats were quantified. Blood samples from 255 bats representing 26 species from the families of Emballonuridae (3 species; 33 individuals), Molossidae (2 species; 26 individuals), Mormoopidae (1 species; 1 individual), Phyllostomidae (18 species; 180 individuals), and Vespertil

European bat lyssaviruses: Distribution, prevalence and implications for conservation.

Worldwide, there are more than 1100 species of the Order Chiroptera, 45 of which are present in Europe, and 16 in the UK. Bats are reservoirs of, or can be infected by, several viral diseases, including rabies virus strains (in the Lyssavirus genus). Within this genus are bat variants that have been recorded in Europe; European bat lyssavirus 1 (EBLV-1), European bat lyssavirus 2 (EBLV-2) and, four currently unclassified isolates. Since 1977, 783 cases of EBLVs (by isolation of viral RNA) have been recorded in Europe. EBLV-1 or EBLV-2 has been identified in 12 bat species, with over 95% of EBL

Going batty: US bat imports raise concerns for species conservation and human health.

The relationship between bats (order: Chiroptera) and humans is complex, highly contextualized across the globe, and dynamic. We assessed the United States (US) importation of live bats, as well as bat-derived products, from bat conservation and human health (zoonotic disease) perspectives. From 2015 to 2023, at least 284 bat species were imported into the US from at least 106 countries of origin, predominantly Indonesia. Scientific use was the most frequently declared import purpose. According to the IUCN Red List, thirty-seven of these bat species are extinction vulnerable. An investigation

The Fast and the Furriest: Investigating the Rate of Selection on Mammalian Toxins.

The evolution of venom and the selection pressures that act on toxins have been increasingly researched within toxinology in the last two decades, in part due to the exceptionally high rates of diversifying selection observed in animal toxins. In 2015, Sungar and Moran proposed the 'two-speed' model of toxin evolution linking evolutionary age of a group to the rates of selection acting on toxins but due to a lack of data, mammals were not included as less than 30 species of venomous mammal have been recorded, represented by elusive species which produce small amounts of venom. Due to advances

Dietary and flight energetic adaptations in a salivary gland transcriptome of an insectivorous bat.

We hypothesized that evolution of salivary gland secretory proteome has been important in adaptation to insectivory, the most common dietary strategy among Chiroptera. A submandibular salivary gland (SMG) transcriptome was sequenced for the little brown bat, Myotis lucifugus. The likely secretory proteome of 23 genes included seven (RETNLB, PSAP, CLU, APOE, LCN2, C3, CEL) related to M. lucifugus insectivorous diet and metabolism. Six of the secretory proteins probably are endocrine, whereas one (CEL) most likely is exocrine. The encoded proteins are associated with lipid hydrolysis, regulation

Public health awareness of emerging zoonotic viruses of bats: a European perspective.

Bats classified in the order Chiroptera are the most abundant and widely distributed non-human mammalian species in the world. Several bat species are reservoir hosts of zoonotic viruses and therefore can be a public health hazard. Lyssaviruses of different genotypes have emerged from bats in America (Genotype 1 rabies virus; RABV), Europe (European bat lyssavirus; EBLV), and Australia (Australian bat lyssavirus; ABLV), whereas Nipah virus is the most important recent zoonosis of bat origin in Asia. Furthermore, some insectivorous bat species may be important reservoirs of SARS coronavirus, wh

The presence of Histoplasma capsulatum in environments from the state of Nayarit, Mexico, reveals a potential risk of infection for human populations.

The Histoplasma capsulatum complex clusters cryptic species with genetic diversities linked to their geographic distribution and virulence. The American continent harbours its highest diversity, making this region the main axis for H. capsulatum spread. Species of this complex cause respiratory-systemic mycosis known as histoplasmosis. Infection occurs through the inhalation of fungal propagules that grow in sites such as caves, mines, and abandoned buildings, where environments rich in organic matter containing micronutrients present in bat and bird guano favour the development of these funga

Deep learning reveals persistent individual signatures in bat echolocation calls of the greater leaf-nosed bat.

Intraspecific variation is a prerequisite for natural selection and can manifest in various phenotypic traits, including vocal signals. However, classifying individuals based on their vocalizations, or acoustic individual identification (AIID), remains a significant challenge. This is particularly true for species that use rapidly varying echolocation calls for orientation. Here, we demonstrate that deep learning can overcome the limitations of traditional methods and reveal persistent individual signatures within bat echolocation calls. We recorded 17 584 echolocation calls from 34 individual

Bats of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta: A revised checklist with significant new records.

We present updated baseline information on bats inhabiting the Vietnamese Mekong Delta based on literature review and field expeditions between 2018 and 2024. In total, 32 bat species from six families were documented across 23 study sites within the delta. Our integrated analyses of morphological and acoustic data along with mitochondrial sequences reveal two new country records (Rhinolophus thailandensis and Hipposideros kingstonae) and novel populations of relict forms in several species' complexes (R. macrotis, R. marshalli, and H. galeritus). These findings indicate that bat populations i

Comparison of manual and automated methods in the hematological evaluation of a frugivorous bat captured in urban green areas.

Increasing and unplanned urbanization can intensify wildlife contact with humans and domestic animals, raising concerns about the spillover of zoonotic pathogens. Bats play a relevant ecological role due to their great niche diversity and wide distribution, and may act as reservoirs for various pathogens. Despite their importance, hematological values for non-hematophagous bats remain limited, hindering the assessment of their health and physiological responses. This study characterized hematological parameters and blood cell morphology in Artibeus planirostris captured in urban green areas of

Lessons learned from bat and rodent reservoir hosts of zoonotic viruses.

Zoonotic virus emergence is a continued threat to global health, though more than two-thirds originate in wildlife. Within natural reservoirs, bats and rodents are host to a remarkable diversity of highly pathogenic viruses, including coronaviruses, filoviruses, hantaviruses, and more. Yet, reservoir hosts rarely develop disease. In bats, functional adaptations related to inflammasome activation, cell death, and cytokine storm have been noted, while maintaining potent interferon and restriction factor activity. Similarly, in rodent reservoirs, chronic infection with hantaviruses is associated

Nelson Bay Orthoreovirus cell attachment protein σC determines strain-specific differences in infectivity and pathogenesis.

Nelson Bay orthoreovirus (NBV) was initially discovered in a bat sample but has since been isolated from patients with acute respiratory tract diseases. Accumulating reports of NBV isolation from patients with respiratory tract viral infections suggest that NBV is able to transmit and cause disease in humans. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We previously established a reverse genetics system for NBV Miyazaki-Bali/2007 (MB) strain isolated from a patient with an acute respiratory tract disease. We found that the fusion-associated small transmembrane protein (FAST)-w

In vitro characterization of different genetic strains of rabies virus isolated from non hematophagous bats.

Rabies is one of the oldest diseases recognized by humanity, caused by the rabies virus (RABV). This zoonosis has a worldwide distribution and still causes the death of approximately 60,000 people a year. Despite advances in research, there are still gaps in knowledge about how RABV is maintained in the wild, especially aspects related to its biology and its mechanisms for adapting to its hosts. In recent years, reports of the isolation of RABV in different bat species, with varying feeding and behavioral habits, have increased public health concerns. The possibility of these animals developin

Divergent Alphacoronavirus Lineages Identified in Alabama Bats, USA.

Bats are crucial reservoirs for coronaviruses, yet surveillance in the southeastern United States remains limited. Using carcasses submitted from public health surveillance for rabies, we screened 170 non-rabid bat carcasses from Alabama using a tiered real-time PCR framework targeting broad Alpha- and Betacoronavirus, alongside specific Sarbecovirus and Merbecovirus lineages. Overall, coronavirus prevalence was 3.5% (6/170), with all positives resolving as Alphacoronavirus. Detections spanned six counties and three bat taxa: Tadarida brasiliensis, Myotis spp., and Eptesicus fuscus, with the l

Hormonal control of the asymmetric uterus of the bat Molossus molossus during pregnancy and lactation: Emphasis on progesterone and estradiol.

Molossus molossus is an important species of Neotropical insectivorous bat of the family Molossidae. Despite its wide distribution, representativeness, and ecological importance, there are no detailed studies regarding the hormonal control of the female reproductive organs of this species, which presents accentuated morphofunctional asymmetry, with dextro-dominance. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the variations in hormone serum levels and in uterine hormonal control of M. molossus during its different reproductive phases, with an emphasis on estradiol and progesterone.
