Variation in the response to ductal obstruction of feline submandibular and sublingual salivary glands and the importance of the innervation.

A variable response following ductal ligation of feline salivary glands corresponds to the human condition but contrasts with a predictable atrophy in obstructed salivary glands of rodents popularly used as a model for human salivary problems. The present investigation is concerned with a possible reason for the variable response, namely the preservation of the innervation. Ducts of feline submandibular and sublingual salivary glands were ligated with or without the inclusion of the chorda tympani. Inclusion led to a delayed initial response followed by progressive atrophy until the parenchyma

Effects of parasympathectomy on androgen responses of the rat submandibular gland.

The effects of androgen on the activities of esteropeptidase and delta 4-3-ketosteroid 5 alpha-reductase were investigated. Ratios of the denervated side to the non-operated side for gland weight and esteropeptidase activity were higher in androgenized females than in untreated females. The specific activities of 5 alpha-reductase were increased by denervation but the total activities were decreased. The results suggest that parasympathectomy leads to higher androgen responsiveness in the rat submandibular gland, which relates to the observed reduction in weight loss of the gland and the incre

Olfactory threshold increase in trigeminal neuralgia after balloon compression.

Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (ITN) is a well-known disease often treated with neurosurgical procedures, which may produce sensorial abnormalities, such as numbness, dysesthesia and taste complaints. We studied 12 patients that underwent this technique, in order to verify pain, gustative and olfactory thresholds abnormalities, with a follow-up of 120 days. We compared the patients with a matched control group of 12 patients. Our results found a significant difference in the olfactory threshold at the immediate post-operative period (p=0.048). We concluded that injured trigeminal fibers are p

Radiologic evaluation and clinical assessment of facial sinus in adults and children - computed tomography study.

OBJECTIVE: The facial sinus is a recess of the lateral retrotympanum located between the chorda tympani (ChT) and facial nerve (FN). Chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma often spreads from the pars flaccida to the facial sinus (FS). In stapedotomy, if an unfavorable ChT type is encountered, there is a need for removal of bone between the ChT and FN. The aim of the study was to assess FSs in adults and children according to Alicandri-Ciufelli classification, to measure FS width and depth in computed tomography scans, evaluate the correlation between measurements and different types of facial

Intracellular pH modulates taste receptor cell volume and the phasic part of the chorda tympani response to acids.

The relationship between cell volume and the neural response to acidic stimuli was investigated by simultaneous measurements of intracellular pH (pHi) and cell volume in polarized fungiform taste receptor cells (TRCs) using 2',7'-bis-(2-carboxyethyl)-5-(and-6)-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF) in vitro and by rat chorda tympani (CT) nerve recordings in vivo. CT responses to HCl and CO2 were recorded in the presence of 1 M mannitol and specific probes for filamentous (F) actin (phalloidin) and monomeric (G) actin (cytochalasin B) under lingual voltage clamp. Acidic stimuli reversibly decrease TRC pHi

On the two subdivisions and intrinsic synaptic connexions in the submandibular ganglion of the rat.

Parasympathetic neurones in the submandibular ganglion of the rat innervate the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. Neurones which innervate the submandibular gland (s.m. neurones) are usually located along the salivary ducts which drain both glands. Neurones which innervate the sublingual gland (s.l. neurones) are located in the thin sheet of tissue which lies between the salivary ducts and the lingual nerve. The existence and characteristics of intrinsic synaptic connexions were studied electrophysiologically in these two divisions of the submandibular ganglion. Three days or more

Response of rat superior salivatory units to chorda tympani stimulation.

Unit responses to chorda tympani stimulation in urethane anesthetized rats were characterized by response latency and frequency following ability. One hundred and fifty one units responded with constant latencies, mean: 16.9 msec, S.D.: 7.8 msec. Responses recorded from within the superior salivatory nucleus (SSN) had significantly longer latencies (18.8 +/- 6.8, n = 94) than those from surrounding areas (13.5 +/- 8.3, n = 50) (p less than 0.001). This difference was due to the higher incidence of responses with latencies between 2.7 and 10 msec outside of the SSN (44%) compared to SSN respons

Effect of parasympathetic decentralization on interferon-gamma release from rat submandibular lymph nodes in vitro.

The aim of this study was to examine the regulation of interferon (IFN)-gamma release by cells from submandibular lymph nodes of rats subjected to a unilateral parasympathetic decentralization by severing the ipsilateral chorda tympani 7 days earlier. Cells obtained from contralateral sham-operated submandibular lymph nodes were employed as control. Parasympathetic decentralization of lymph nodes resulted in significantly less IFN-gamma release as compared to that found in innervated lymph nodes. Mitogens (lipopolysaccharide, concanavalin A) stimulated IFN-gamma release in cells derived from t

Feasibility of Automated Drilling for Robotic Cochlear Implantation Determined by Pediatric Anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: The facial recess (FR) access is the gold standard for cochlear implant (CI) surgery indicated to rehabilitate profound deafness. Recently, robot-assisted and navigation-based keyhole surgeries also use the same FR access to drill an entry toward the inner ear for placing a CI array. In robot-assisted CI surgery (RACIS) with the HEARO system, a 1.8 mm diameter cutting drill is used directly through the FR without damaging the chorda tympani and the facial nerve. To make the leap toward pediatric cases with this system, a thorough knowledge of the developmental anatomy of the FR is e

Distribution and function of muscarinic receptor subtypes in the ovine submandibular gland.

The effects of muscarinic receptor antagonists on responses to electrical stimulation of the chorda-lingual nerve were determined in pentobarbitone-anesthetized sheep and correlated to the morphology of tissue specimens. Stimulation at 2 Hz continuously, or in bursts of 1 s at 20 Hz every 10 s, for 10 min induced similar submandibular fluid responses (19 +/- 3 vs. 21 +/- 3 microl x min(-1) x g gland(-1)), whereas vasodilatation was greater during stimulation in bursts (-52 +/- 4 vs. -43 +/- 5%; P < 0.01). Continuous stimulation at 8 Hz induced substantially greater responses (66 +/- 9 microl x

Effect of parasympathectomy on the histochemical maturation of myoepithelial cells of the rat sublingual salivary gland.

This effect of parasympathectomy was assessed by fluorescent microscopy using nitrobenzoxadiazole-phallacidin, which is known for its specific binding to actin filaments. Resection of the chorda tympani within 48 h after birth inhibited the normal formation of actin in the myoepithelial cells and the maturation of myoepithelial cells. The effect of denervation decreased progressively if the operation was delayed. Denervation 30 days after birth had no effect on development and differentiation of myoepithelial cells. Moreover, the procedure produced no histochemical changes in the myoepithelial

Visualization of the relationship between electrogustometry and whole mouth test using multidimensional scaling.

Interpreting the relationship between different taste function tests of different stimuli, such as chemical and electrical stimulation, is still poorly understood. This study aims to analyze visually as well as quantitatively how to interpret the relationship of results between taste function tests using different stimuli. Patients who underwent the whole mouth test and Electrogustometry (EGM) at a tertiary medical center between August 2018 and December 2018 were reviewed retrospectively with electronic medical records. Of the 110 patients, a total of 86 adults who self-reported that their ta

[Predictive value of electrogustometry in the preoperative diagnosis of severity of middle ear pathology].

The chorda tympani nerve (CTN) is frequently damaged in various inflammatory middle ear disorders. To determine the validity of electrogustometry in the diagnosis of preoperative severity of a middle ear lesion of the posteosuperior portion of the mesotympanum, the threshold determined by electrogustometry was examined preoperatively and was correlated with the intraoperative findings. One hundred and six ears of 97 patients with various middle ear diseases were examined. The patients ranged in age from 5 to 70 years (average, 39.4) : 55 of them were male and 42 were female. In 80 of them the
