Coping strategies among adolescents and young adults living with HIV/AIDS in Accra-Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Living with HIV/AIDS is remarkably stressful and has an adverse effect on one's physical and mental health. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the introduction of highly active anti-retroviral therapy has led to an increased number of children with perinatal acquired HIV who are living into adolescence and adulthood. Developing strategies to cope with HIV becomes imperative, especially among these adolescents. The study determined the factors that influence coping strategies among adolescents living with HIV. METHODS: An analytic cross-sectional design was used. A total of 154 adolescents age

Islamic trauma healing (ITH): A scalable, community-based program for trauma: Cluster randomized control trial design and method.

BACKGROUND: Somalia has long been in a state of humanitarian crisis; trauma-related mental health needs are extremely high. Access to state-of-the-art mental health care is limited. Islamic Trauma Healing (ITH) is a manualized mosque-based, lay-led group intervention aimed at healing the individual and communal mental wounds of war and refugee trauma. The 6-session intervention combines Islamic principles with empirically-supported exposure and cognitive restructuring principles for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). ITH reduces training time, uses a train the trainers (TTT) model, and reli

Smoking to Regulate Negative Affect: Disentangling the Relationship Between Posttraumatic Stress and Emotional Disorder Symptoms, Nicotine Dependence, and Cessation-Related Problems.

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with various aspects of cigarette smoking, including higher levels of nicotine dependence and cessation difficulties. Affect-regulatory smoking motives are thought to, in part, underlie the association between emotional disorders such as PTSD and smoking maintenance, although few studies have empirically tested this possibility. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 135 treatment-seeking smokers who were directly exposed to the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001. We modeled the direct effect of 9/11 PTSD symptom severi

Reducing sleep medication via parallel delivery of clinical pharmacist-led deprescribing and clinician-supervised asynchronous CBT for insomnia: the SEDATIVE trial.

Chronic insomnia is a prevalent disorder that negatively impacts Veterans’ health. The first-line intervention is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I); however, sleep medications, which have unreliable effectiveness and pose risks for adverse events, are the most commonly used intervention. Pairing CBT-I with deprescribing (the supervised reduction of medications) can enhance medication reduction outcomes and reduce rebound insomnia. This pilot trial tests the parallel delivery of Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner (CPP) deprescribing and a digital clinical decision support (CDS) plat

Just-in-Time Delivery of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Based Exercises: Single-Case Experimental Design With Random Multiple Baselines.

BACKGROUND: Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) are a promising approach in mental health care given the potential scalability (ie, interventions are offered automatically and remotely) and preciseness (ie, the right interventions are offered at the right moments). Typically, a smartphone app is programmed to assess users' psychological states in daily life; when a particular state is detected, the app prompts users to engage in specific behaviors. Conceptually, JITAIs hold significant potential for precision health, although there is currently limited evidence in the literature. OBJ

[Short-term effects of a cognitive-behavioural group therapy in social phobia: evaluation of sixty patients].

This study analyses the short term effects of a cognitive-behavioral group therapy with 60 patients suffering from social phobia according to the diagnostic criteria of the DSM IV. The therapeutic program is based on 12 sessions of 2 hours (for 6 to 9 subjects) and includes exposure, cognitive restructuring and social skills training. The sample included 34 women and 26 men, with an average age of 34.8 years (SD=9.3). Most patients presented generalized social phobia (n=42; not generalized social phobia: n=18), and 24 received at least one comorbid axis I diagnosis. Subjects were evaluated bef

Individualized cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain in Japan: study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain imposes a substantial burden on individuals and society. Cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain (CBT-CP) has proven effective internationally, but randomized evidence in Japan is scarce. The first Japanese trial was a single-center, 16-session videoconference program that prioritized pain intensity. In contrast, this multicenter trial tests a brief, face-to-face, individualized CBT-CP program with quality of life (QoL) as the primary outcome. METHODS: This open-label, randomized, parallel-group superiority trial enrolls 60 adults aged 20-80 years with chronic p

Age-related changes to brain energetics revealed by PET/MRI imaging.

Aging is accompanied by several neurophysiological changes. Of recent interest are age-related changes in brain energetics-how the brain produces and uses energy. In vitro, preclinical, and genetic investigations point to a general decline in the efficiency of brain energetics in aging, which may help explain age-related changes in mood, cognition, movement, and behaviour, as well as an increased likelihood of developing neurodegenerative disorders. We hypothesized that age-related alterations to brain energetics are observable using functional neuroimaging data from healthy individuals (N = 2

The treatment of childhood social anxiety disorder.

The concept of shyness in young children is not new; however, only recently has it been recognized that childhood SAD is a prevalent and severe disorder, with both immediate and long-term implications for academic, social, and emotional functioning. With the recognition that this disorder can result in severe lifetime impairment, both pharmacologic and psychosocial interventions for youth with social phobia are now beginning to be developed, and their efficacy, to be determined. The study of efficacious pharmacologic treatments with childhood anxiety disorders is limited at this time. There ha

The Promoting Resilience in Stress Management (PRISM) intervention for adolescents and young adults receiving hematopoietic cell transplantation: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is prevalent among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) receiving hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The Promoting Resilience in Stress Management (PRISM) intervention is a resilience-coaching program that has been shown to mitigate distress and improve quality of life among AYAs receiving chemotherapy for newly diagnosed or advanced cancer. This article describes the protocol of an ongoing randomized-controlled trial (RCT) examining the efficacy of PRISM among AYAs receiving HCT for cancer and/or blood disorders. Amplified Gliosis and Interferon-Associated Inflammation in the Aging Brain following Diffuse Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with chronic psychiatric complications and increased risk for development of neurodegenerative pathology. Aged individuals account for most TBI-related hospitalizations and deaths. Nonetheless, neurobiological mechanisms that underlie worsened functional outcomes after TBI in the elderly remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to identify pathways that govern differential responses to TBI with age. Here, adult (2 months of age) and aged (16-18 months of age) male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to diffuse brain injury (midline fluid percussion), and c

[How to characterize and treat sleep complaints in bipolar disorders?].

OBJECTIVES: Sleep complaints are very common in bipolar disorders (BD) both during acute phases (manic and depressive episodes) and remission (about 80 % of patients with remitted BD have poor sleep quality). Sleep complaints during remission are of particular importance since they are associated with more mood relapses and worse outcomes. In this context, this review discusses the characterization and treatment of sleep complaints in BD. METHODS: We examined the international scientific literature in June 2016 and performed a literature search with PubMed electronic database using the follow

Occupational Therapy Incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Informed Components for Pain-Related Activity Avoidance Early After Olecranon Fracture Surgery: A Case Report.

Postoperative pain involves not only nociceptive components but also psychological reactions such as anxiety, pain catastrophizing, and fear-avoidance, which may delay functional recovery. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is well established for chronic pain, evidence on the use of CBT-informed components by rehabilitation professionals in the early postoperative phase after upper-limb fracture surgery remains limited. This report describes occupational therapy (OT) incorporating CBT-informed components (hereafter, CBT-informed OT) for a patient who exhibited disproportionate pain-r

Risk Factors for Noninitiation and Dropout in Blended Therapy in Inpatient Psychiatric Patients: Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Blended therapy (BT) combines digital applications with face-to-face treatment and has become an increasingly important component of psychiatric care. Evidence indicates that BT can achieve outcomes comparable to or even superior to those of traditional face-to-face therapy. Despite certain advantages, routine implementation of BT remains challenging, and clinical practice suggests that while some inpatients engage with BT, many either discontinue early or do not initiate its use at all. To better understand these patterns, this multicentric, retrospective observational study inves

Mental health meets computational neuroscience: A predictive Bayesian account of the relationship between interoception and multisensory bodily illusions in anorexia nervosa.

Mental health disorders pose a significant challenge to society. The Bayesian perspective on the mind offers unique insights and tools that may help address a variety of mental health conditions. Psychopathological dysfunctions are often connected to altered predictive and active inference processes, in which cognitive and physiological pathogenic beliefs shape the clinical condition and its symptoms. However, there is a lack of general empirical models that integrate cognitive beliefs, physiological experience, and symptoms in healthy and clinical populations. In this study, we examined the r
