The preventive and therapeutic application of garlic and other plant ingredients in the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Since ancient times, pharmacologically active ingredients derived from natural sources, including plants and microbials have been used in the treatment of a wide array of diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and cancers. Herbal extracts and polyphenols are produced from herbs that contain a variety of ingredients, most of which exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-microbial actions. Gingivitis is triggered by the infection of the periodontal tissues with periodontal disease-causing pathogens present in the dental biofilm. This is accompanied by weak inflammatory i

Reduction in the levels of oral malodor precursors by hydrogen peroxide: in-vitro and in-vivo assessments.

The potential of hydrogen peroxide to reduce the levels of salivary thiol precursors of oral malodor was investigated in-vitro and in-vivo. In both cases the concentration of thiol groups was determined colorimetrically by quantitative reaction with 4,4'-bis (dimethylamino) diphenyl carbinol. Addition of volumes of hydrogen peroxide solution (containing between 0.18 and 0.90 mmol) to premeasured aliquots of saliva in-vitro, resulted in reductions in salivary thiol levels of between 53% and 75% compared to controls. This positive indication prompted an in-vivo investigation. The efficacy of a f

Dental care as a vital service response for disaster victims.

Hurricane Katrina's impact on the infrastructure of public health and the health care system in the affected areas was unprecedented in the United States. Many dental offices were flood-bound in New Orleans and over 60% of dental practices were partially or completely damaged in affected counties in Mississippi. Most needs assessments conducted during the initial recovery operations did not include questions about access to oral health care. However, the extent of the destruction of the health care infrastructure demonstrated the need for significant state and federal support to make dental tr

Dental health: what is being taught to college students.

An analysis of the dental health material in all college-level, health education textbooks published between 1966 and 1973 showed a deficiency in the amount, the thoroughness, and the quality of the dental health information given. Realibility of information from one source to another is low, and some information is inaccurate. On the basis of information in these textbooks, serious questions are raised concerning the adequacy of dental health education in college-level health education courses. The dentist is advised to review and to examine the dental health information that is being taught

Effect of oral care gel on the quality of life for oral lichen planus in patients with chronic HCV infection.

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) decreases the quality of life because it can cause spontaneous pain during eating and tooth-brushing and an uncomfortable feeling in the mouth. In addition, OLP may be associated with HCV-related liver disease. We investigated the visual analogue scale (VAS) and effects of oral care gel, REFRECARE-H®, on patients with OLP associated with HCV infection. RESULTS: Nine OLP patients (mean age 67.9 ± 7.6 years) with HCV-related liver diseases were recruited and their VAS score determined along with a biochemical examination of the blood. Types of OLP included er

Electric pulp tester conductance through various interface media.

A conducting media is necessary when using an electric pulp tester (EPT). The objective of this study was to observe differences in conductance through various media. We hypothesized that variations in current conductance through different media exist. The pulp chamber of a freshly extracted premolar was exposed, and the cathode of a voltmeter was inserted into the pulpal tissue. The anode was coupled to the EPT handpiece. The measurement taken during dry (no interface media) EPT tip-to-tooth contact was 0 V, which served as negative control. EPT tip directly touching the cathode measured 3.9V

Traditional Oral Hygiene Practices and Their Effectiveness: A Systematic Review of the Evidence.

PURPOSE: Given the increasing interest in natural and sustainable oral hygiene options, this systematic review evaluates the efficacy of traditional oral hygiene practices, specifically miswak and oil pulling, in maintaining oral health compared with conventional practices, addressing the question: how do these practices affect plaque and gingival outcomes relative to toothbrushing and standard rinses? We hypothesized non-inferiority for short-term plaque/gingivitis control, with limited evidence for longer-term outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRIS

Ill effects of improper oral hygeine procedure.

Improper use of the tools that prevent tooth decay and gingival disease can also produce harmful effects. For example, dental floss can cause inflammation; toothbrushes could cause abscesses; and water-irrigation devices might drive foreign material into soft tissue. This report discusses the effects of incorrect oral hygiene, the signs the practioner should notice, and the proper corrective steps. Although effective oral hygiene is essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and supporting tissues, analysis of the literature and clinical observation suggested that six problem areas may be

Synergistic effects of bioactive silica and fluoride in enamel protection and repair: an in vitro study.

Erosive tooth wear (ETW) compromises enamel integrity. This study investigated the synergistic effects of bioactive silica and fluoride, as well as the independent performance of bioactive silica, in protecting sound enamel and repairing previously eroded enamel under erosive-abrasive challenges. An in vitro laboratory design was adopted using two models: (1) a protective model with sound enamel and (2) a remineralizing model with pre-eroded enamel. Ninety-six bovine enamel blocks were randomly allocated to four dentifrice groups (n=12/group) within two experimental models: RGS/NaF (bioactive
