A Critical Review of Modern Concepts for Teeth Whitening.

Besides prevention of caries and periodontitis, an increasing number of oral care products focus on teeth whitening. The aim of this review is to summarize and discuss frequently used whitening agents and their efficacy from a chemical viewpoint. Therefore, a comprehensive literature survey on teeth whitening agents and products was conducted. The current whitening methods are analyzed and discussed from a chemist's viewpoint. Frequently used whitening agents are abrasives (mechanical removal of stains), antiredeposition agents (prevention of deposition of chromophores), colorants (intended to

General Health, Systemic Diseases and Oral Status in Adult Patients with Coeliac Disease.

The prevalence of coeliac disease in the general population is 0.5%-1%; however, most patients remain undiagnosed until adult age. In some cases, the onset is represented by sub-clinical signs, some of which can be found in the mouth. The aim of this research was to identify any associations between the clinical characteristics of coeliac disease and oral manifestations. A structured questionnaire was administered to a group of 237 individuals with coeliac disease. 100% of the subjects fully completed the questionnaire. Among them, 182 (76.7%) were female, 64 patients (27%) were aged 15 to 24

The Assessment and Management of External Cervical Resorption with Periapical Radiographs and Cone-beam Computed Tomography: A Clinical Study.

INTRODUCTION: This in vivo study assessed whether there was a difference between periapical radiographs (PRs) and cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging in the detection, assessment, and management of external cervical resorption (ECR). The secondary aim was to determine if parallax radiographs were of any further benefit compared with a single PR. METHODS: PR and CBCT data were gathered for 115 teeth (98 patients) consecutively diagnosed with ECR. The diagnosis and treatment plan of each tooth were determined with PRs and CBCT imaging. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive val

Clinical effectiveness of a potassium chloride containing chewing gum in the treatment of hypersensitive teeth.

Dental hypersensitivity has been observed in an increasing number of younger patients over the past few decades. The reasons for this include forced or false tooth-brushing techniques, and abrasions caused by bruxism or orthodontic procedures. The aim of the present study was to assess the possible benefits of a potassium chloride (KCl) containing chewing gum in dental hypersensitivity. The study population consisted of 59 selected university students (age: 25 +/- 4.4 years). Each subject suitable for entry into the study had more than 3 teeth sensitive to thermal stimulation (air stimulus ran

Non-destructive classification of type 2 diabetic teeth using LIBS-derived elemental biomarkers and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic illness that severely alters oral health, elevating periodontal infection incidence and dental treatment failures via mechanisms including hyperglycemia. While laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) using machine learning (ML) has demonstrated the presence of diabetes in hair, nails, and urine, mineralized tooth tissues that preserve long-term metabolic signatures remain underexplored as a diagnostic substrate. RESULTS: A total of 3600 LIBS spectra were collected from four dental tissues (enamel, coronal dentine, radicula

Numerical investigations of bone remodelling around the mouse mandibular molar primordia.

The formation of the alveolar bone, which houses the dental primordia, and later the roots of tooth, may serve as a model to approach general questions of alveolar bone formation. In this respect, this study aimed to investigate the potential interactions between the alveolar bone formation and tooth eruption by using finite element (FE) methods, and to figure out whether the expanding tooth systems induce shear stresses that lead to alveolar bone formation. 3D geometric surface models were generated from the 3D histological data of the heads of mice (C57 Bl/6J) ranging from stages embryonic (

Teaching dental pain with and without underlying oral physiology: learning implications.

This study investigated whether teaching undergraduate dental students the diagnosis and management of acute dental pain alongside the underpinning oral physiology helped them to understand the topic better than teaching them acute dental pain as a separate entity. Each of three clinical years of dental students at the same dental school was taught in two groups. Each group was taught the signs/symptoms of five acute dental pain conditions by the same member of the staff. However, the teaching for one group of students in each year reminded the students about the physiology that underpinned th

Long-term follow-up of composite resin restorations with self-etching adhesives.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis, derived from a previous short-term (7-day) assessment, that the absence of conventional pulp protection is not responsible for long-term pulp complications of composite resin restorations with self-etching adhesives. METHODS: All 150 patients who received the restorations with self-etching adhesives were recalled at least 2 years after the placement of restorations. Of the 47 patients (31%) who responded, 106 restorations aged from 2.2 to 6.5 years were examined for tooth sensitivity and pulp vitality regarding long-term pulp complications. The results were

Sodium acetylsalicylate and the role of prostaglandins in the mechanism of intradental pain.

In order to study the effect of sodium acetylsalicylate and the role of prostaglandins on intradental nerve impulse activity experiments were performed on the teeth of anaesthetized cats. Nerve impulse activity was induced by mechanical and chemical stimuli and recorded by means of electrodes inserted into dentinal cavities. It was shown that such activity could not be blocked by sodium acetylsalicylate or indomethacin given locally or i.v. PGE2 failed to excite the sensory units when given locally (3.5 microng/ml) or intraarterially (35-140 ng/min) alone or in combination with mechanical and
