Degenerative changes in rat condylar cartilage induced by non-matching occlusion created by scattered orthodontic teeth-moving.

The effect of occlusion on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is debated. By inserting rubber-bands that were replaced by self-curing resin one week later, the left maxillary and the right mandibular first-molars were moved and kept mesially in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats in both experimental I (EXP-I) and II (EXP-II) groups, aiming to establish a non-matching cusp-to-fossa occlusal relation. Four weeks later, the left maxillary and the right mandibular third-molars were moved and kept distally in the EXP-II group. Degenerative changes, typically as a cell-free area, were observed in TMJs of the E

Treatment of an adolescent with total ankyloglossia.

This is a report about the orthodontic treatment of a 13-year, 10-month-old boy with total ankyloglossia combined with a Class III occlusion. The patient's tongue was fixed to the floor of his mouth and could not be elevated at all. He had a maxillary deficiency and a mandibular protrusion with a negative overjet. However, he was able to retrude his mandible to an edge-to-edge position. Before orthodontic treatment, the ankyloglossia was surgically rectified. Orthodontic treatment was initiated to improve the patient's occlusion and facial appearance by correcting his retruded maxilla by means

Smile design for the adolescent patient--interdisciplinary management of anterior tooth size discrepancies.

Adolescent patients often seek orthodontic treatment to correct spacing of the maxillary anterior teeth. If the spacing is caused by a tooth size discrepancy that affects one or more anterior teeth, an interdisciplinary treatment plan involving orthodontic, restorative, and periodontal treatment is recommended to achieve a harmonious esthetic result. This article describes a clinical approach for treatment of these complex cases, focusing on the importance of tooth form, gingival esthetics, and treatment sequencing.

Multi-Class Malocclusion Detection on Standardized Intraoral Photographs Using YOLOv11.

Background/Objectives: Accurate identification of dental malocclusions from routine clinical photographs can be time-consuming and subject to interobserver variability. A YOLOv11-based deep learning approach is presented and evaluated for automatic malocclusion detection on routine intraoral photographs, testing the hypothesis that training on a structured annotation protocol enables reliable detection of multiple clinically relevant malocclusions. Methods: An anonymized dataset of 5854 intraoral photographs (frontal occlusion; right/left buccal; maxillary/mandibular occlusal) was labeled acco

Determinants of Severe Orthodontic Treatment Need Using Clinically Categorized Occlusal Features.

Background/Objectives: Systematic assessment of orthodontic treatment needs is essential for prioritizing care in public health programs. The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) provides a composite severity score; however, understanding which individual occlusal traits drive severe treatment needs has a practical screening value. This study aimed to determine which occlusal features, categorized using established clinical thresholds, independently associated with severe orthodontic treatment need. Methods: Pretreatment records of 292 patients (141 men, 151 women; aged 13-42 years) were analyzed. The

Non-Orthodontic, Non-Restorative Closure of Acquired Diastemata.

AIM: To illustrate the reversibility of "pathologic tooth migration" in several patients that were managed by periodontal therapy alone, along with a review of the relevant literature. BACKGROUND: Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) is a common phenomenon among patients seeking dental care. Different etiologic factors have been implicated in PTM: loss of periodontal support, occlusal interferences, posterior bite collapse, and various oral habits such as: lip biting, tongue thrusting, and playing wind instruments. Identification of all the causative factors involved in PTM is crucial for a succe

Multidisplinary management of hypodontia in adolescents: case report.

The purpose of this article is to describe a team approach to treatment of hypodontia in adolescent dentition. A case report of hypodontia with a microdontic lateral incisor in a Class I malocclusion illustrates the principles of case management. Multidisciplinary consultation during treatment planning and coordination and appropriate timing of subsequent interdisciplinary dental care enables the clinician to provide the optimum care. The scope of orthodontic and restorative management depends on the severity of the hypodontia.

TMJ in your practice.

The orthodontic population has a high probability of internal joint and muscles of mastication disorders. In the past orthodontics has been performed with modest consideration of the jaw joints. Reasons why braces are not effective in the treatment of TM disorders are explained. Presently increased emphasis is given to the function and health of the TM joints. The aware orthodontist has an opportunity to address TM disorders and improve the quality of life for his or her patients by doing a few things differently before or concurrent with conventional orthodontics. Latex elastic-induced periodontal damage: a case report on the subsequent orthodontic management.

Proper management of a malocclusion relies on a basic understanding of the development of the dentition and the craniofacial complex. Diagnosis should only be formulated after all the relevant diagnostic records, including clinical examination and history, are reviewed. Armed with this information, the dentist forms the treatment plan. The mere occurrence of a malocclusion does not constitute a need for treatment. Injudicious intervention can be counterproductive or destructive. Through a case report, the deleterious effects of improper case management and questionable treatment mechanics are

Adjustable selective maxillary expansion combined with one-stage maxillomandibular surgery: A prospective study of osseous widening in fifty-five consecutive patients.

OBJECTIVE: SARME is often considered to be the only available treatment for significant or severe maxillary transverse palatal deficiencies (MTD) in skeletally-mature patients. Despite this observation, the aim of our study was to assess a new type of maxilla distraction osteogenesis. Using two innovative tools, we performed selective expansion: the site to be widened and the amount of increase were both pre-selected. Patients were treated in a single maxillomandibular procedure. Our study focuses primarily on the extent of osseous widening. STUDY DESIGN: Post-expansion computed tomography da
