As a primary apple rootstock extensively cultivated across Northeast China, Malus baccata (L.) Borkh. constantly suffers from low temperature, drought and salt damage throughout its growth cycle. NAC transcription factors take critical parts in coordinating plant adaptation to various adverse environments, yet relevant functional research on this woody rootstock species remains limited. In this work, a NAC family gene designated MbNAC40 was cloned from M. baccata, and its biological function was explored via heterologous transformation in Arabidopsis thaliana. Sequence analysis revealed that t

Climate change is intensifying drought stress in viticultural regions, threatening grapevine productivity and quality. New genotypes previously bred for disease resistance are an untested resource regarding their water deficit tolerance. Field experiments were conducted over two seasons, applying well-watered and water-stress treatments in two disease-resistant varieties, Fleurtai and Cabernet Volos. Physiological measurements, RNA sequencing, and GC-MS-based metabolite profiling of leaves were integrated, correlating gene expression and metabolite accumulation with stem water potential (ΨS) u

Plant hormone candidate melatonin has been widely studied in plants under various stress conditions, such as heat, cold, salt, drought, heavy metal, and pathogen attack. Under stress, melatonin usually accumulates sharply by modulating its biosynthesis and metabolic pathways. Beginning from the precursor tryptophan, four consecutive enzymes mediate the biosynthesis of tryptamine or 5-hydroxytryptophan, serotonin, N-acetylserotonin or 5-methoxytryptamine, and melatonin. Then, the compound is catabolized into 2-hydroxymelatonin, cyclic-3-hydroxymelatonin, and N¹-acetyl-N²-formyl-5-methoxyknurami

G. barbadense represents an indispensable germplasm resource for high-quality textile fiber and disease resistance; nevertheless, systematic information regarding its ZRT/IRT-like protein (ZIP) gene family remains limited. Here, a total of 46 GbZIP genes were identified across the G. barbadense genome. Comprehensive bioinformatic investigations revealed uneven chromosomal distribution and confirmed that segmental/whole-genome duplications, supplemented by localized tandem duplications, drove family expansion. Members clustered within the same phylogenetic clades shared conserved motif organiza

Abiotic stress has a significant impact on soybean growth, development, and yield. Proteins containing the Regulator of Chromosome Condensation 1 (RCC1) domain, known as RCPs, play important roles in plant stress responses. However, systematic analysis of the RCP gene family in soybean remains limited. In this study, a total of 52 GmRCP genes were identified in the soybean genome and classified into nine phylogenetic clades. Members within the same clade exhibited similar domain architectures. Collinearity analysis suggested that segmental duplication served as the major driver for the expansi

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is a vital crop for food security, nutrition, and climate resilience in sub-Saharan African and other semi-arid regions. However, its improvement is constrained by the complexity of polygenic traits such as drought tolerance, pest resistance, and seed quality. Conventional breeding, while foundational, remains insufficient to address these challenges at the required pace. Recent advances in multi-omics technologies, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, provide new opportunities to dissect complex traits, identify candidate genes, and acc

Chalcone synthase (CHS) is a pivotal enzyme in flavonoid biosynthesis involved in plant development, defense, and secondary metabolism. Xanthoceras sorbifolium (yellowhorn) is a medicinal and ornamental species with high resistance to environmental stresses, but its CHS gene family remains uncharacterized. We performed a pangenome-wide identification of CHS genes across five yellowhorn genomes (Xzs4, Xwf8, Xjg, Xg11, and Xzg2). Across the five yellowhorn genomes, 27 CHS genes were identified and classified into four core pangenes, present in all five genomes, and two dispensable genes, present

Copper/zinc superoxide dismutases (Cu/ZnSODs) play important roles in improving banana resistance to adverse conditions, but their activities depend on the copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase (CCS) delivering copper to them. However, little is known about CCS in monocots and under stress conditions. Here, a novel CCS gene (MaCCS) was obtained from a banana using reverse transcription PCR and rapid-amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) PCR. Sequence analyses showed that MaCCS has typical CCS domains and a conserved gene structure like other plant CCSs. Alternative transcription start sites (A

The complex network of plant defense mechanisms in response to various stress conditions is often tightly regulated by multiple transcription factors (TFs). They can alter their target gene expression upon binding to their respective cognate cis-elements. A number of studies have functionally characterized the role of different WRKY TFs in various stress conditions in plants such as Arabidopsis, rice, and tobacco. However, their role in a major C4 crop such as pearl millet remains elusive. In our previous study, we showed that the ectopic expression of the group IId member PgWRKY44 in Arabidop

Climate change is reshaping veterinary parasite transmission by altering thermal and hydrological suitability, environmental stage persistence, vector and intermediate host ecology, and contact across livestock-wildlife-companion animal interfaces. These effects are nonlinear; while warming may extend transmission in some systems, heat, desiccation, habitat loss, or disrupted hydrology can reduce the risk or concentrate transmission in local refugia. This critical narrative review compares pasture-transmitted helminths, snail-borne trematodes, environmentally transmitted protozoa, vector-borne
