PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to study the rationale, limitations, techniques, and long-term outcomes of endoscopic ear surgery.
RECENT FINDINGS: The article discusses the advantages of endoscopic ear surgery in treating cholesteatoma and how the hidden sites like facial recess, sinus tympani, and anterior epitympanum are easily accessed using the endoscope.
SUMMARY: Transcanal endoscopic approach allows minimally invasive removal of cholesteatoma with results that compare well to traditional postauricular tympanomastoidectomy.

The results of the various currently-available active middleear implants are discussed. These systems produce high satisfaction (above 85%) in patients with neurosensorial hearing loss. Round window stimulation systems provide excellent results in mixed and conductive hearing loss. Implant removal is required in less than 10% of patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate common presentations and expected outcomes in patients with traumatically induced otologic dysfunction.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review of patients who underwent otologic surgery for sequelae of otologic trauma over a 28-year period. Patients were stratified into major and minor trauma cohorts. Major trauma was designated as closed head injury with or without temporal bone fracture; lower-energy insults comprised the minor trauma group. Ear abuse in school children is common in low socio-economic strata and is often associated a long-term morbidity in our country. This paper presents a study of 250 such children with discussion. Incidence of ear abuse with long term learning deficit was found to be 18.4%.

A hundred and forty patients with destructive pulmonary tuberculosis who suffered concurrently from purulent otitis were examined. Of them, 7 (5%) patients were found to have tuberculosis of the middle ear and to have Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the sputum and otic discharge. Tympanograms for probes ranging from 250 through 2000 Hz were evaluated for 467 older adults. Measures of middle ear resonant frequency were compared across age groups (48-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80-90 years) and gender. No significant age group trends were observed for middle ear resonant frequency. Middle ear resonant frequencies were significantly higher for older women than for older men, but the differences were small.
