Clinical features of Kashin-Beck disease in adults younger than 50 years of age during a low incidence period: severe elbow and knee lesions.

More than one million people are affected by Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) in a limited endemic area. However, few studies focused on the clinical features of adult KBD patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features of adult KBD patients who were younger than 50 years of age during a low incidence period. A special questionnaire was designed that surveyed general data, clinical symptoms, and signs and included the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Anthropometrics, the joint VAS, the range of joint motion (ROM), and joint function were measured. The VAS and joint dysfunction we

Functional joint regeneration is achieved using reintegration mechanism in Xenopus laevis.

A functional joint requires integration of multiple tissues: the apposing skeletal elements should form an interlocking structure, and muscles should insert into skeletal tissues via tendons across the joint. Whereas newts can regenerate functional joints after amputation, Xenopus laevis regenerates a cartilaginous rod without joints, a "spike." Previously we reported that the reintegration mechanism between the remaining and regenerated tissues has a significant effect on regenerating joint morphogenesis during elbow joint regeneration in newt. Based on this insight into the importance of rei

Lateral epicondylitis of the elbow: an up-to-date review of management.

Lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, is an overuse tendinopathy of the common extensor origin of the elbow in patients involved in repetitive movement of the wrist and forearm. Lateral epicondylitis is a self-limiting condition, with operative management only recommended in severe, recalcitrant cases. This article reviews the recent updates on operative and non-operative management of lateral epicondylitis.

Developing a Method to Control an Arm-Assist-Suit by Predicting Arm-Trajectory Using Electromyography.

Many researchers have developed assist-suits to support repetitive and strenuous physical labor, but existing suits show unsatisfactory responsiveness and restrict arm motions. Therefore, we propose a method for an arm-assist-suit that synchronizes arm motions by using electromyography (EMG) to predict arm trajectory. EMG is used to measure and record electrical signals while muscles are active. Further, predicted arm-joint motions and estimated arm-joint angles are used for arm trajectory predictions. In this study, we attempted the prediction of elbow-joint motions and the timing of motion c

[Posttraumatic complications on children's elbows].

Most fractures during growth affect the upper extremities. Severe fractures with an increased number of complications are mainly localized beyond the elbow joint. Displaced fractures of the elbow joint have limited potential for spontaneous correction as the bones near the elbow joint account for only 20% of growth in length and the possibility of spontaneous correction is already exhausted at the age of 7. The consequences of inadequately reduced elbow fractures, therefore, may adversely affect a patient for his lifetime. Cubitus varus and valgus are the most common deformities following insu

Effect of Stretching of Spastic Elbow Under Intelligent Control in Chronic Stroke Survivors-A Pilot Study.

Objective: To assess the short-term effects of strenuous dynamic stretching of the elbow joint using an intelligent stretching device in chronic spastic stroke survivors. Methods: The intelligent stretching device was utilized to provide a single session of intensive stretching to the spastic elbow joint in the sagittal plane (i.e., elbow flexion and extension). The stretching was provided to the extreme range, safely, with control of the stretching velocity and torque to increase the joint range of motion (ROM) and reduce spasticity and joint stiffness. Eight chronic stroke survivors (age: 52

Postoperative Elbow Instability: Options for Revision Stabilization.

Persistent and recurrent postoperative elbow instability includes a spectrum of pathologies ranging from joint incongruity and subluxation to dislocation. Restoration of osseous anatomy, particularly the coronoid, is a priority in restoring elbow alignment and maintaining ulnohumeral joint stability. After managing bony deficiencies, soft-tissue and ligamentous structures are typically addressed. When required, both static and dynamic adjunctive stabilization procedures have been described, which aid in maintaining a concentric reduction. In these complex procedures, both complication avoidanc

Post-traumatic Non-haemophilic Haemosiderotic Synovitis of the Elbow: A Case Report.

Haemosiderotic synovitis (HS) is a rare synovial proliferative disease secondary to haemarthrosis, often with articular cartilage destruction. It is most frequently reported in patients with haemophiliacs, and the knee joint is most frequently affected. However, there are no reports on the elbow joint without haemophiliacs. A 60-year-old woman who had undergone osteosynthesis for a left radial head fracture 8 years earlier came to our clinic with left elbow pain. X-rays and CT scans showed osteopenia and osteoarthritic changes throughout the elbow joint. MRI revealed joint effusion and synovia

Reconstruction of the coronoid process with the olecranon tip for chronic elbow dislocation in children: A rare case report and literature review.

The coronoid process of the ulna, as a key part of the elbow joint, plays an important role in maintaining elbow joint stability. Reconstruction of the coronoid process is necessary in both acute and chronic coronoid defects to restore elbow stability and avoid early joint degeneration. The olecranon tip may be a useful autologous osteochondral graft for reconstructing the same shape of the ulna coronoid process. The purpose of this report was to verify if reconstruction of the coronoid process with the olecranon tip can restore elbow stability and kinematics. Here, we report a 13-year-old boy

Arthroscopic debridement and irrigation of periprosthetic total elbow infection.

We report on a case of arthroscopic treatment of septic arthritis of the elbow joint in a 65-year-old man with an elbow endoprosthesis. Two months after arthroplasty of the elbow joint, the patient developed acute septic arthritis of the right elbow. Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was identified as the causative organism. Six days after the onset of symptoms, the patient was treated with a single arthroscopic procedure of the infected periprosthetic joint, including irrigation with 5 L of Ringer's lactate solution, debridement, and partial synovectomy with a 4.5-mm curved shaver.

Kinematic changes in elbow osteoarthritis: in vivo and 3-dimensional analysis using computed tomographic data.

PURPOSE: To investigate in vivo 3-dimensional kinematics in elbow osteoarthritis. We hypothesized that normal kinematics is preserved in an osteoarthritic elbow with a normal radiocapitellar joint (OAN). Conversely, we hypothesized that an osteoarthritic elbow with radiocapitellar degenerative changes (OAD) would show an abnormal kinematics pattern. Furthermore, the differences in osteophyte formation between groups may affect elbow kinematics. METHODS: We examined 7 normal elbows, 7 OAN elbows, and 9 OAD elbows. We investigated 3-dimensional kinematics using computed tomography registration
