Harnessing hybrid perception on multi-scale features for hand-foot-mouth disease multi-region prediction based on Seq2Seq.

Accurate prediction of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is crucial for effective epidemic prevention and control. Existing prediction models often overlook the cross-regional transmission dynamics of HFMD, limiting their applicability to single regions. Furthermore, their ability to perceive spatio-temporal features holistically remains limited, hindering the precise modeling of epidemic trends. To address these limitations, a novel HFMD prediction model named Seq2Seq-HMF is proposed, which is based on the Sequence-to-Sequence(Seq2Seq) framework. This model leverages hybrid perception of m

Agent-based modelling of Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Traditional epidemiological models tend to oversimplify the transmission dynamics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) to replicate observed tuberculosis (TB) epidemic patterns. This has led to growing interest in advanced methodologies like agent-based modelling (ABM), which can more accurately represent the complex heterogeneity of TB transmission. OBJECTIVES: To better understand the use of agent-based models (ABMs) in this context, we conducted a systematic review with two main objectives: (1) to examine how ABMs have been employed to model the intricate heterogeneity of M.tb

Towards joint disease mapping.

This article discusses and extends statistical models to jointly analyse the spatial variation of rates of several diseases with common risk factors. We start with a review of methods for separate analyses of diseases, then move to ecological regression approaches, where the rates from one of the diseases enter as surrogate covariates for exposure. Finally, we propose a general framework for jointly modelling the variation of two or more diseases, some of which share latent spatial fields, but with possibly different risk gradients. In our application, we consider mortality data on oral, oesop

Models of gonorrhoea transmission from the mouth and saliva.

This Personal View argues for a new framework of gonorrhoea transmission in men who have sex with men in which the oropharynx plays a major role in transmitting gonorrhoea to, or acquiring gonorrhoea from, their partner's oropharynx, penis, or anorectum through either direct contact or via saliva. To avoid preconceived notions of transmission dynamics, we ask readers to imagine that they are investigating a new sexually transmitted infection. On the basis of the existing clinical and epidemiological data for gonorrhoea at the penis, oropharynx, and anorectum site, we develop two models for tra

A survey of variable selection methods in two Chinese epidemiology journals.

BACKGROUND: Although much has been written on developing better procedures for variable selection, there is little research on how it is practiced in actual studies. This review surveys the variable selection methods reported in two high-ranking Chinese epidemiology journals. METHODS: Articles published in 2004, 2006, and 2008 in the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology and the Chinese Journal of Preventive Medicine were reviewed. Five categories of methods were identified whereby variables were selected using: A--bivariate analyses; B--multivariable analysis; e.g. stepwise or individual significa

A robust modeling framework to investigate transmissible diseases: COVID-19 in Chile as a case study.

INTRODUCTION: In the face of the challenges posed by pandemics like COVID-19, the need for accurate mathematical models and methods to predict the impact of outbreaks on public health in real-time is paramount. This research aims to develop a robust, adaptable, and general framework for investigating the dynamics of any transmissible disease. The primary objective of this work is to achieve robust parameter optimization for a general modeling framework, a capability crucial for effectively applying it to reconstruct and predict epidemiological curves for any transmissible disease. METHODS: Th

Beyond R0: How vaccination and post-infection mortality drive epidemic persistence and oscillations.

The long-term consequences of infectious diseases, particularly post-infection mortality (PIM), represent a significant yet understudied aspect of epidemiology. Furthermore, the interaction between PIM and vaccination, a key public health intervention, remains poorly understood from a dynamical systems perspective. In this paper, we develop a six-dimensional compartmental model that incorporates both PIM and vaccination. Analytical results show that the model admits a rich bifurcation structure, including a backward bifurcation where a stable endemic equilibrium coexists with a stable disease-

On the necessity of accounting for age structure in human malaria transmission modeling.

Malaria is one of the most common mosquito-borne diseases widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, causing thousands of deaths every year in the world. In a previous paper, we formulated an age-structured model containing three structural variables: (i) the chronological age of human and mosquito populations, (ii) the time since they are infected, and (iii) humans waning immunity (i.e. the progressive loss of protective antibodies after recovery). In the present paper, we expand the analysis of this age-structured model and focus on the derivation of entomological and epidemiological re

The transmission dynamics of an infectious disease model in fractional derivative with vaccination under real data.

The resurgence of monkeypox causes considerable healthcare risks needing efficient immunization programs. This work investigates the monkeypox disease dynamics in the UK, focusing on the impact of vaccination under real data. The key difficulty is to correctly predict the spread of the disease and evaluate the success of immunization efforts. We construct a mathematical model for monkeypox infection and extend it to the fractional case considering the Caputo derivative. The analysis ensures the positivity, boundedness, and uniqueness of the solution for the non-integer system. We conduct a loc

Pandemic waves as the outcome of coupled social and disease dynamics: A mathematical modelling study.

The COVID-19 pandemic was strongly shaped by population behavioural responses. As cases surged, populations adopted contact precautions that reduced infection levels. This, in turn encouraged relaxation of control measures and prepared the ground for the next pandemic wave. Standard mathematical models do not account for this interaction between infection dynamics and behaviour. Here, we compare a standard transmission model to a coupled behaviour-disease model. We parameterise the models for 13 European countries, using data on SARS-CoV-2 infection incidence and stringency of control measures

Fractional-order mathematical model for Monkeypox transmission dynamics using the Atangana-Baleanu Caputo operator.

Monkeypox continues to be a major global health concern, marked by recurring outbreaks and complex transmission dynamics. Traditional models of Monkeypox often fail to account for reinfection and the benefits of fractional-order systems, limiting their ability to accurately represent real-world disease progression. This study addresses these gaps by applying the Atangana-Baleanu-Caputo fractional derivative with the Mittag-Leffler kernel to model the transmission dynamics of Monkeypox. The Picard-Lindelöf method is used to establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions, ensuring the model

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Integrating Genetic and Environmental Risk.

Autism spectrum disorder is a common neurodevelopmental condition, defined by persistent deficits in social interaction and communication, as well as restricted repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Autism spectrum disorder is highly heterogeneous, encompassing a broad range of clinical presentations and suggesting it includes multiple etiological subtypes. Although no unified cause has been established, accumulating evidence indicates that genetic susceptibility interacts with environmental and developmental factors to shape diverse phenotypic outcomes. This review summar

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in experimental parkinsonian models and Parkinson's disease.

A number of experimental studies using parkinsonian models have revealed that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have neuroprotective properties against dopaminergic neurotoxicity not only by their cyclooxygenase-inhibiting effect but also by other specific properties or some unknown pharmacological effects. This article reviews heterogeneous pharmacological properties of NSAIDs including inhibitory effect against nitric oxide synthesis, agonistic action for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, or possible suppressive effects against dopamine quinone generation, and als

Cannabinoids and morphine differentially affect HIV-1 expression in CD4(+) lymphocyte and microglial cell cultures.

The influence of substances of abuse on the progression of HIV-1 infection is controversial, and pharmacologic factors have been postulated as a potential explanation for conflicting data arising from epidemiological studies and animal models. In the present study, cell culture models of HIV-1 infection were used to test this hypothesis. The synthetic cannabinoid WIN 55,212-2 was found to potently inhibit HIV-1 expression in a concentration- and time-dependent manner in CD4(+) lymphocyte and microglial cell cultures. In sharp contrast, morphine either inhibited or stimulated viral expression,

Mathematical modeling of tuberculosis using Caputo fractional derivative: a comparative analysis with real data.

In this study, we investigate an epidemiological model for tuberculosis in China using the Caputo fractional-order derivative. To ensure dimensional consistency, we appropriately adjust model parameters to maintain uniform units. The mathematical properties of the model, including the non-negativity, boundedness, existence, and uniqueness of its solutions, are thoroughly examined and established. Sensitivity analysis, based on the basic reproduction number, is performed to evaluate the impact of critical parameters on disease dynamics, and additional insights are provided through 3D mesh and c

Dynamics of bovine tuberculosis transmission in mixed herds in Chad.

We consider a model for the spread of bovine tuberculosis in herds comprising three species (bovids, caprids and equids) in Chad. The epidemiological model is built on top of a classic Lotka-Volterra competition model, which is exploited in a regime where stable coexistence of the three species holds. The epidemiological model itself is an SLI model, because of the absence of treatment for herds in the area. After studying some mathematical properties of the model, we perform a short computational analysis, investigating sensitivity of the model and comparing solutions with and without competi

Comparative analysis of the costs and benefits of alternative disease control strategies: vector control versus human case finding and treatment.

Recent estimates of the costs of detection and treatment and vector control for human trypanosomiasis are summarized and the main factors influencing their levels discussed. In order to proceed to an economic analysis a benefit unit is defined as equivalent to one year's infection avoided due to the control strategy for one person. Different monetary values could be assigned to this unit and it has the advantage of being easily integrated into epidemiological models, being represented by the difference in prevalence with and without control. A simple spreadsheet-based economic model was develo

Epidemiological inference for emerging viruses using segregating sites.

Epidemiological models are commonly fit to case and pathogen sequence data to estimate parameters and to infer unobserved disease dynamics. Here, we present an inference approach based on sequence data that is well suited for model fitting early on during the expansion of a viral lineage. Our approach relies on a trajectory of segregating sites to infer epidemiological parameters within a Sequential Monte Carlo framework. Using simulated data, we first show that our approach accurately recovers key epidemiological quantities under a single-introduction scenario. We then apply our approach to S
