Family-based substance use screening and intervention for adolescents with chronic medical conditions: a study protocol to implement SBIRT-family within school-based health centers.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with a chronic medical condition (CMC) have an increased risk of developing a substance use (SU) disorder, despite the impact that SU may have on disease-related outcomes. School-based health centers (SBHCs) offer universal screening, brief intervention, and referral for adolescents with chronic medical conditions for substance use treatment. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based early intervention used to detect and address risky substance use that has yet to be broadly adopted in public schools. Moreover, despite extensi

Greater discounting of delayed rewards in young adults with family histories of alcohol and drug use disorders: studies from the Oklahoma family health patterns project.

BACKGROUND: Increased discounting of delayed rewards may be a premorbid characteristic and possible risk factor for alcohol and other drug use disorders; however, previous studies have found no or minimal differences in delay discounting in individuals at risk for substance use disorders based on family history. It is possible that increased delay discounting may be more closely associated with antisocial traits, evident in a subset of individuals with positive family histories of alcohol and drug use disorders, and that previous studies were underpowered for detecting subtle to modest overall

The mediating and moderating roles of physical sub-health in the relationship between family functioning and mental health problems among Chinese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health is shaped by both family environments and physical well-being. However, the role of physical sub-health, a state of functional imbalance and fatigue prior to diagnosable illness, remains poorly understood in this process. This study examined whether physical sub-health serves both as a psychosomatic pathway and as a vulnerability factor linking family functioning to adolescent mental health. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 647 primary and secondary school students across China. Validated scales were used to assess family functioning, p

Exploring the use of family health histories in the African American community to reduce health disparities: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities are costly and preventable differences in disease progression that disproportionately affect minority communities. Practices to reduce health disparities are often rooted in prevention, particularly through screening tools. Family Health History tools are screening mechanisms that explore family history to better understand how an individual's health can be predicted or impacted. These tools are underutilized in the African American community. Contributions to underutilization include a lack of cultural tailoring in the tools, a lack of health literacy, and a lac

Caregiver-provider relationship quality and health outcomes in family caregivers of people living with dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) work with healthcare providers to ensure effective care coordination on behalf of the care recipient. However, challenges within the caregiver-healthcare provider relationship are common and may contribute to poor caregiver health outcomes. This study examined the impact of perceived quality of the relationship between family caregivers and healthcare providers and the caregivers' daily mental health symptom burden (depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress). METHODS: The study included 228 famil

Growth In Participation Of Mental Health Counselors, Marriage And Family Therapists After Medicare Coverage Expansion.

Beginning in January 2024, Medicare allowed mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists to bill directly under fee-for-service Medicare for diagnosing and treating mental illnesses, marking a major expansion of the Medicare mental health workforce. Using 100 percent fee-for-service claims from the period 2023-24, we conducted the first national study of Medicare billing for these clinicians after the policy change to assess early billing trends, including the volume and mix of services, clinicians' and beneficiaries' characteristics, and geographic patterns. Family-Focused Digital Mental Health Care for Pediatric Oppositional Symptoms and Caregiver Outcomes: Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oppositional symptoms in youth are characterized by an angry or irritable mood and excessive defiance (eg, arguing), negatively impacting the mental well-being of children, adolescents, and their caregivers. Pediatric digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) that approach care from a whole-family perspective may effectively address mental health (MH) symptoms in both pediatric participants and their caregivers, though this has not been explored in the context of oppositional symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess oppositional symptoms in children and adole

Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening in India: Insights from National Family Health Survey-5 Data.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer, one of the commonest malignancies, can be prevented and cured through early diagnosis. Screening plays an important role in its control strategy, and India has dedicated strategies to its implementation. However, screening uptake is low in India. We examined how sociocultural and financial factors affect Indian women's cervical cancer-screening uptake behaviour. METHODS: Cervical cancer screening-uptake and relevant social, cultural, and financial data obtained from round-5 of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) were used for analysis. We examined 399,039 eli

Surgical indicators for obstetrics and family planning in routine health information systems: a landscape analysis.

Strengthening use of high-quality data for surgical obstetrics and family planning is important for improving maternal and perinatal health outcomes. Routine health information systems (RHIS) represent an important data source for indicator tracking. This landscape analysis aims to describe and compare surgical obstetric and family planning indicators put forth by global multi-stakeholder groups and those that are currently captured in RHIS in nine low- and middle-income countries. The analysis focused on five indicator topics: (i) caesarean delivery, (ii) peripartum hysterectomy, (iii) female

Preventing Childhood Sexual Abuse Related Mental Health Deterioration Using a Narrative Family Intervention in Burundi.

Despite the severe impact of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on trauma-related disorders, preventive interventions are scarce, especially in (post-)conflict regions. We developed and evaluated a narrative family communication approach for sexually abused Burundian female children and adolescents (N = 102). The intervention cohort (n = 55) received psychoeducation, parental skill training, and preventive narrative exposure therapy. Intervention participants reported improved parental acceptance at 3- and 12-month follow-ups (3mFUP, 12mFUP), and showed greater improvement in overall mental health b

Integration of family planning into the primary health care in Ethiopia: results from national assessment.

BACKGROUND: Family planning (FP) is part of Ethiopia's essential health service package. However, integrating FP into other health care services is a relatively new concept. Integrated service can minimize missed opportunities and allow health workers to provide FP services and Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent, and Nutrition (RMNCAH-N) services simultaneously. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the levels of FP integration into maternal and child health (MCH) services at primary health care service delivery units in Ethiopia. METHODS: This was a facility-based c

Talking and making meaning about parental mental health problems: The role of children's family caregivers.

When a parent is less able to meet their children's needs due to a severe and enduring mental health problem (MHP), other adult family members often help with childcare. We present a Grounded Theory of how children's family caregivers construct meaning about the parental MHP and communicate about it with children. Nineteen caregivers participated in qualitative interviews. Each supported at least one related child aged 4-17 years with a parent with MHPs. We found that caregivers engaged in a Core Social Process of providing protection in uncertainty. This comprised three categories as follows:
