In vitro and in vivo anthelmintic efficacy of plant cysteine proteinases against the rodent gastrointestinal nematode, Trichuris muris.

Extracts of plants, such as papaya, pineapple and fig, are known to be effective at killing intestinal nematodes that inhabit anterior sites in the small intestine, such as Heligmosomoides polygyrus. In this paper, we demonstrate that similar in vitro efficacy also occurs against a rodent nematode of the large intestine, Trichuris muris, and confirm that the cysteine proteinases present in the plant extracts are the active principles. The mechanism of action of these enzymes involved an attack on the structural proteins of the nematode cuticle, which was similar to that observed with H. polygy

Defect-Engineered Tetragonal ZrO2 Nanoparticles for Biomaterial Interfaces: Green Synthesis, Biointerfacial Interactions, and SERS Biosensing.

Zirconia (ZrO2) is a widely used biomaterial in dental and orthopedic applications due to its excellent biocompatibility, chemical stability, and mechanical properties. However, the role of defect structure and phase composition in governing biomolecule-surface interactions at the biointerface remains insufficiently understood. In this work, we demonstrate a synthesis-driven strategy for engineering defect-rich tetragonal ZrO2 nanoparticles via conventional wet-chemical and plant-extract-mediated green routes using Laurus nobilis, Salvia rosmarinus, and Ficus benghalensis. Plant-mediated synth

Efficacy of medicinal plants and their derived biomolecules against Plasmodium falciparum.

Many apicomplexan pathogens pose significant threats to humans and domestic animals, with the lack of effective drugs and drug resistance representing major challenges in disease management. To address this, the search for new and potent antimalarial drugs is crucial. Plant-based formulations offer a promising alternative for such drug development. Here, we evaluated the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of nine plant extracts, traditionally used to treat fever-like symptoms in Bangladesh. We assessed the antimalarial activity of plant extracts by using the Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 growth inhi

Immunometabolic Plasticity in Sarcopenic Obesity: Toward a New Paradigm for Precision Immunonutrition.

Immunonutrition continues to generate heterogeneous and often contradictory clinical outcomes, suggesting that nutrients do not exert fixed immunological effects but interact with the biological context in which they operate. Sarcopenic obesity (SO) represents a paradigmatic clinical model of this complexity, where chronic low-grade inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, anabolic resistance, metabolic inflexibility, and microbiota remodeling converge to compromise the adaptive capacity of integrated immunometabolic networks. We propose that this condition may be interpreted as a state of imp

Impact of fig maceration under various conditions on physicochemical and sensory attributes of wine vinegar: A comprehensive characterization study.

In this work, wine vinegars macerated with figs under different conditions have been characterized for the first time. Samples were analyzed by solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, sensory and physicochemical analysis. The results revealed that fig maceration of wine vinegars influenced the physicochemical, sensory, and volatile profiles of the final product, which were mainly affected by the fig amount (10, 20 or 30%), the fig type (fresh or dry) and the base wine vinegar (young or aged) used, and to a lesser extent the way the fig was added (crushe

New Insights Concerning Phytophotodermatitis Induced by Phototoxic Plants.

The present review explores the underlying mechanisms of phytophotodermatitis, a non-immunologic skin reaction triggered by certain plants followed by exposure to ultraviolet radiation emitted by sunlight. Recent research has advanced our understanding of the pathophysiology of phytophotodermatitis, highlighting the interaction between plant-derived photosensitizing compounds (e.g., furanocoumarins and psoralens) and ultraviolet light leading to skin damage (e.g., erythema, fluid blisters, edema, and hyperpigmentation), identifying these compounds as key contributors to the phototoxic reaction

Moraceae Plants with Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activity: A Review.

Hyperpigmentation is an abnormal darkening of the skin mostly derived from excessive melanin production. It is typical of skin disorders including melasma associated to pregnancy or age, freckles, sun freckles and photoaging, age spots, and actinic keratosis. These conditions can be uncomfortable for aesthetic reasons and specific depigmenting treatment is frequently requested. Tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1) is the rate-limiting enzyme of melanin synthesis and the main target of antihyperpigmentation remedies. Much interest is focused on compounds able to inhibit tyrosinase activity, particularly n
