Type I mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS I) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder with neurological features. Humans and laboratory animals with MPS I exhibit various white matter abnormalities involving the corpus callosum and other regions. In this study, we first validated a novel MRI technique, entitled Relaxation Along a Fictitious Field in the rotating frame of rank n (RAFFn), as a measure of myelination and dysmyelination in mice. We then examined differences between MPS I mice and heterozygotes using RAFF5 and histology. RAFF5 (i.e., RAFFn with n = 5) relaxation time constants

PURPOSE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder influenced by genetic factors, with a long preclinical phase characterized by subtle alterations in brain microstructure. Although the apolipoprotein E ε4 allele is a well-established genetic risk factor, AD is increasingly recognized as a polygenic condition. However, how polygenic risk manifests in white matter (WM) microstructure and cognition remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the associations between AD polygenic risk scores (ADPRS), WM microstructure, and cognitive performance in clinically asympto

BACKGROUND: We compared limbic structure volumes and graph theory parameters of the limbic covariance network between patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) and healthy controls, and between patients with single and recurrent TGA events.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 122 patients with TGA (single event, n = 107; recurrent events, n = 15) and 50 healthy controls who underwent three-dimensional T1-weighted MRI imaging of the brain. Volumetric analysis of the subcortical limbic structures, including the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, mammillary body, hypothalamus, basal forebrain,

Cutaneous manifestations are commonly observed in pediatric patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Acanthosis nigricans, however, is rarely reported, and even less often in association with neuropsychiatric manifestations of lupus erythematosus. We describe a 9-year-old boy with acute behavioral and cognitive deterioration, combined with cutaneous, diffuse hyperpigmented and hyperkeratotic plaques. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging revealed cortical atrophy and white matter abnormalities involving the fornix, corpus callosum, and parieto-occipital periventricular regions. The presence o

Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the abnormal intracellular accumulation of SNCA/α-synuclein. While the exact mechanisms underlying SNCA pathology are not fully understood, increasing evidence suggests the involvement of autophagy as well as lysosomal deficiencies. Because CTSD (cathepsin D) has been proposed to be the major lysosomal protease involved in SNCA degradation, its deficiency has been linked to the presence of insoluble SNCA conformers in the brain of mice and humans as well as to the transcellular transmission of SNCA aggregates. We here post

Large tumors invading the dorsal part of the anterior third ventricle are difficult to manage. The anterior transcallosal approach is usually used to manage these tumors. In our clinic, anterior callosal section was combined with the anterior interhemispheric (AIH) translamina terminalis approach for these tumors with excellent results. The AIH approach is useful for removing tumors in and around the anterior part of the third ventricle. However, AIH alone is insufficient for large tumors invading the dorsal part of the anterior third ventricle. In such situations, simple anterior callosal sec

Anorexia nervosa (AN) involves limbic dysfunction, yet its neurobiology remains unclear. Examining morphological alterations in subcortical limbic regions across AN's nutritional states and associations with neuroendocrine markers may improve understanding. We hypothesized that subcortical limbic volumes would be reduced in AN, normalize partially following short-term weight-restoration, and fully after long-term recovery. We examined whether leptin, ghrelin, neurofilament light (NFL), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) predict subcortical limbic dynamics. We studied 547 female indiv

BACKGROUND: Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may appear normal in a proportion of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides quantitative measures of white matter microstructure and may reveal subtle changes not visible on routine MRI. This study compared DTI-derived diffusion metrics with standard MRI epilepsy protocols in patients with unilateral TLE to assess the extent and pattern of white matter alterations.
METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in the Department of Radiodiagnosis at Sree Balaji Medical College

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacts up to 60 million people annually. Both severe TBIs and repeated mild TBIs (rmTBIs) can lead to persistent symptoms such as cognitive deficits, and even neurodegenerative diseases like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). To date, no therapies exist to mitigate the risk of CTE or other chronic symptoms post-TBI. Tau protein accumulation plays a pivotal role in the development of CTE. Recent studies indicate that small-molecular ligands targeting prolyl oligopeptidase (PREP) can decrease Tau accumulation through the activation of protein phosphatase 2 A (P

Long-term potentiation of the hippocampal-septal pathway was examined by intracellular recording techniques. High frequency stimulation (two 100-Hz 1-s trains with a 20-s interval between them) of the hippocampal CA3 area resulted in a transient depolarization in rat lateral septal nucleus neurons. High frequency stimulation was followed by a facilitation of fast and slow inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, lasting for more than 2 h, but not by a long-lasting increase in the excitatory postsynaptic potential in the normal solution. Long-term potentiation (>2 h) of the excitatory postsynaptic p

INTRODUCTION: The triangular recess (TR), also called triangular fossa or vulva cerebri, represents the anterior extension of the diencephalic ventricle, located between the anterior columns of the fornix and the anterior white commissure. Over time, this structure of the third cerebral ventricle generated many disputes. While some anatomists support its presence, others have opposite opinions, considering that it only becomes visible under certain conditions. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the tangible structure of the triangular recess. Secondly, the quantitative analysis allowed us

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to a fear of anxiety-related sensations and is a dispositional variable especially elevated in patients with panic disorder (PD). Although several functional imaging studies of AS in patients with PD have suggested the presence of altered neural activity in paralimbic areas such as the insula, no study has investigated white matter (WM) alterations in patients with PD in relation to AS. The objective of this study was to investigate the WM correlates of AS in patients with PD.
METHODS: One-hundred and twelve right-handed patients with PD and 48 heal

OBJECTIVE: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a non-invasive MRI technique that has been used to quantify white matter (WM) abnormality in both clinical and experimental hydrocephalus (HCP). However, no DTI study has been conducted to characterize anisotropic diffusion properties in an animal model of infantile HCP. This DTI study was designed to investigate a rat model of HCP induced at postnatal day 21, a time developmentally equivalent to the human infancy.
METHODS: DTI data were acquired at approximately 4 weeks after the induction of HCP with kaolin injection. Using a 7 Tesla small animal

Animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be used to determine the progressive neurodegeneration characteristics of AD in vivo using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Given the need for therapeutic interventions before the onset of frank AD, it is critical to examine if AD models demonstrate neuroanatomical remodeling in an equivalent preclinical phase. This manuscript examines the trajectories of brain and behavioural changes in the Triple transgenic mouse model (3xTg) prior to the development of AD-like behaviours. The 3xTg mimics both β-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles throug

IMPORTANCE: Although the detrimental effects of alcohol on the brain are widely acknowledged, observed structural changes are highly heterogeneous, and diagnostic markers for characterizing alcohol-induced brain damage, especially in early abstinence, are lacking. This heterogeneity, likely contributed to by comorbidity factors in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD), challenges a direct link of brain alterations to the pathophysiology of alcohol misuse. Translational studies in animal models may help bridge this causal gap.
OBJECTIVE: To compare microstructural properties extracted using

OBJECT: Endoscopic surgery has been reported to be more cost-effective and safer than open craniotomy for resection of colloid cysts, despite a 5-10% conversion rate to craniotomy, a 5% recurrence rate, a 5-10% ventricular shunting rate, a 5-10% epilepsy rate, and a 3-4 day hospital stay. In 1985, the authors developed a interhemispheric, transcallosal, subchoroidal, fornix-sparing approach that allowed safe total resection of the colloid cyst and that appeared to be superior to the endoscopic approach. The long-term results are analyzed and compared with findings in the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke can lead to neurological changes beyond the initial lesion site, including post-stroke crossed-cerebellar degeneration. While traditional methods typically rely on total lesion volume to assess remote effects, the spatial distribution of lesions may more accurately predict cerebellar atrophy and associated functional deficits. This study investigated whether anatomically specific cortical lesions contribute to cerebellar gray matter volume loss, expanding on the hypothesis that cerebellar atrophy may reflect more than global brain injury severity, and instead result from t

BACKGROUND: Abnormal structure and function of gray matter (GM) have been discovered in the cortico-striatal-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuit in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The GM structure and function may be influenced by the structure and function of the white matter (WM). Therefore, it is crucial to explore the characteristics of WM in OCD.
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 52 patients with OCD and 39 healthy controls (HCs) were collected. The tract-based spatial statistics, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (A
