Poly-L/D-lactic acid anchors are associated with reoperation and failure of SLAP repairs.

PURPOSE: This study investigates factors associated with failure and reoperation after glenoid labrum repair. METHODS: We studied a nonconcurrent cohort of consecutive patients undergoing arthroscopic superior labrum repair at a single institution by 2 fellowship-trained surgeons over a 10-year period. RESULTS: There were 348 patients included in this study with a mean age of 33.4 years (95% confidence interval [CI], 32.1 to 35.9) and a mean clinical follow-up of 12.3 months (95% CI, 10.9 to 13.8). The overall reoperation rate was 6.3%, with a revision labrum repair rate of 4.3%. Subsequent

Radiographic and clinical outcomes of total shoulder arthroplasty with an all-polyethylene pegged bone ingrowth glenoid component: prospective short- to medium-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Glenoid components often cause total shoulder arthroplasty failure. This study examines short-term to midterm radiographic and clinical results of a hybrid glenoid component with 3 cemented peripheral pegs and a central peg, which allows biologic fixation with use of native humeral head autograft. METHODS: In 4 years, 80 glenoid components were implanted during primary total shoulder arthroplasty with at least 2-year follow-up data. Within 12 months, 4 shoulders were revised and excluded from final analyses. Seven patients did not complete their questionnaires. Outcomes data inclu

The influence of three-dimensional planning on decision-making in total shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Long-term results and complication rates in shoulder arthroplasty are related to implant positioning. Current literature reports increased precision in glenoid component positioning using 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) planning tools. This study evaluated the accuracy of glenoid version and inclination measurements using 2D CT scans compared with a validated 3D software program and its influence on decision making on implant selection. METHODS: Preoperative CT scans were obtained from 50 patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty. Glenoid version and inclination

Evaluation of temporomandibular joint morphology and morphometry in male osteoporotic patients using advanced imaging and biochemical markers: A cross-sectional study.

Osteoporosis is a condition with reduced bone mass and disrupted architecture. Osteoporosis affects the Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) by changing bone density and quality. This study aims to determine the nature and extent of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement in osteoporotic patients by correlating TMJ morphological changes detected by CBCT with systemic bone health indicated by BMD T-scores from DEXA and analyzing BTMs in serum and saliva. This study was a cross-sectional study conducted from May 2021 to December 2022. It involved 50 participants divided into two groups (N=25). On

Bony increased-offset-reverse shoulder arthroplasty: 5 to 10 years' follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Glenoid lateralization has been shown to be the most imortant factor in maximizing passive range of motion and shoulder stability while preventing scapular impingement and notching. We aimed to evaluate mid- to long-term functional and radiologic outcomes after bony increased-offset-reverse shoulder arthroplasty (BIO-RSA) using a Grammont-style (medialized) humeral implant. METHODS: The study included 143 consecutive shoulders (140 patients; mean age, 72 years) treated with a BIO-RSA for rotator cuff deficiency. A cylinder of autologous cancellous bone graft, harvested from the hu

Management of aggressive benign and malignant bone tumors of the shoulder region.

BACKGROUND: The shoulder girdle is one of the most common sites of aggressive malignant and benign bone tumors. Curative resections and sparing of the limb are possible. However, reconstruction methods remain a challenge and the functional results vary. METHODS: Fourteen patients with aggressive benign or malignant bone tumors about the shoulder girdle who were treated with surgical resection with possible need for reconstructions were retrospectively analyzed. There were 8 men and 6 women. Their ages ranged from 15 to 70 years; the mean age at operation was 36 years. Ten patients had maligna

Scapular anatomy of Paranthropus boisei from Ileret, Kenya.

KNM-ER 47000A is a new 1.52 Ma hominin scapular fossil belonging to an associated partial skeleton from the Koobi Fora Formation, Kenya (FwJj14E, Area 1A). This fossil effectively doubles the record of Early Pleistocene scapulae from East Africa, with KNM-WT 15000 (early African Homo erectus) preserving the only other known scapula to date. KNM-ER 47000A consists of a complete glenoid cavity preserving a portion of the scapular spine and neck, the proximal half of the acromion, and a majority of the axillary border. A sufficient amount of anatomy is preserved to compare KNM-ER 47000A with scap

Arthroscopic Bristow-Latarjet combined with bankart repair restores shoulder stability in patients with glenoid bone loss.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic Bankart repair alone cannot restore shoulder stability in patients with glenoid bone loss involving more than 20% of the glenoid surface. Coracoid transposition to prevent recurrent shoulder dislocation according to Bristow-Latarjet is an efficient but controversial procedure. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We determined whether an arthroscopic Bristow-Latarjet procedure with concomitant Bankart repair (1) restored shoulder stability in this selected subgroup of patients, (2) without decreasing mobility, and (3) allowed patients to return to sports at preinjury level. We also ev

Differential somatostatin sensitivity of corticotropic and somatotropic responses following amino acid infusion.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: A new clinical test named "The shoulder anterior jerk test" is proposed to confirm the diagnosis of chronic shoulder anterior instability. MATERIAL: The test combines of a compression force and a translation force, applied along the arm between the humeral head and the glenoid cavity. In so doing, a subluxation of the humeral head is provoked and it is accompanied with a jerk recognised by the patient as his instability. METHODS: Three different populations of patients had been studied: Population A: 28 patients operated on for chronic anterior dislocation, uni or bilateral

A low teres minor index of trophicity negatively impacts the functional outcomes of reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: The teres minor (TM) participates in active external rotation (ER) after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). The TM index of trophicity (T2/G) measured on CT scan is a predictor of poor results in patients who have irreparable rotator cuff tears. The aim of this study was to evaluate how T2/G impacts the functional outcomes of RSA in the context of massive rotator cuff tears. We hypothesized that a T2/G less than 0.75 is a predictor of worse functional outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved 32 shoulders in 26 patients (mean age 71 years) who underwent RSA for cuff

Effect of a multicomponent exercise program focused on multivariable fatigue improvement versus standard care for glenohumeral instability: MoveUS study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral instability is a highly prevalent pathology; however, there are problems in defining it. Traditionally, structural problems such as labral injury or bone loss in the glenoid cavity and/or humeral side were considered the main causes; but recently, it has been seen that motor control plays a very relevant role. This means that currently, there is a disparity of action protocols, and the treatment of this pathology is a great challenge. AIM: The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a supervised multicomponent therapeutic exercise program in redu

Glenoid loosening and failure in anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty: is revision with a reverse shoulder arthroplasty a reliable option?

INTRODUCTION: Our purpose was to evaluate if, in case of aseptic glenoid loosening and failure in anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA), revision by a reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is a reliable therapeutic option. METHODS: Retrospective multicenter cohort study of 37 consecutive anatomical TSA revised by RSA for aseptic glenoid loosening or failure. The decision to implant a RSA was related to the presence of associated complications: rotator cuff tears (n = 24), subscapularis insufficiency (n = 29), prosthetic instability (n = 13), and glenoid bone deficiency (n = 37). The pati
