The clinical and radiographic findings in 104 patients with chondroblastoma are presented. Pain was an almost constant presenting complaint, often accompanied in the case of para-articular lesions by impaired function of an adjacent joint. The majority (80%) were in long bones with a mean age of presentation of 16 years. The characteristic radiological image of these lesions was an eccentric radiolucency, having a sharply defined sclerotic margin and containing areas of calcification in approximately a third of cases. They were always related to a growth plate. Nearly half were confined to the

Melorheostosis is an uncommon sclerosing bone dysplasia that primarily affects the long bones on one side, and occasionally hands or feet. The unique radiographic appearance, resembling dripping candle wax on the affected bone, is typically used to aid in diagnosis. We present a case report of a 35-year-old woman who had had several bony swellings in her right hand, right forearm, right arm, left hand, and right upper chest for 28 years, which were slowly progressive. The patient complained of dull, throbbing pain and restricted joint movement in the affected areas. Plain radiography revealed

Fractures of the hand are frequently encountered with injuries to the phalanges and metacarpals comprising the vast majority. Fractures of the carpal bones excluding the scaphoid, however, are fairly uncommon. Despite the rarity of fractures of the remaining seven carpal bones, they can cause a disproportionate amount of morbidity from missed diagnosis due to their subtlety as well as their frequent association with significant ligamentous disruption or even other carpal bone fractures. Delayed diagnosis can result in inadequate fracture care, which places the wrist at risk of disabling sequel

The authors describe a case of a severe crush injury in a 28-year-old man, whose left hand was caught in a punch press. Several carpal bones and all structures at the wrist except the extensor tendons were destroyed. The hand was totally denervated and devascularized. This case represents the 500th reattachment performed by the University of Toronto microvascular team. The authors review the operative technique and discuss the functional results 9 months after operation followed by a rigorous program of rehabilitative therapy.

AUDIENCE: The target audience for this small group session is emergency medicine residents, primarily for use in didactic conference. This session can also be utilized with medical students, or faculty looking to review relevant hand anatomy and common injuries.
INTRODUCTION: Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an emerging technology that has the ability to produce highly accurate anatomic, cellular and medical device models. Limited research has shown promise in teaching anatomy,1 congenital heart disease2 and surgical pre-operative planning.3 Despite this potential, there is sparse evidence

A fall onto the hand can be followed by ligament ruptures, bone fractures or dislocated fractures of the carpus. The diagnosis is based on history, clinical evaluation, and X-ray examination in two perpendicular planes, followed if necessary by CT scan or MRI scan. Lesions of the scapholunate ligaments cannot be definitely excluded except by arthroscopy. As well as fractures of the carpometacarpal joints, fractures involving the ring structure of the carpus or ligament ruptures between carpal bones are frequently observed, and these lead to significantly impaired biomechanics. The prognosis is

The indication and best time for intramedullary nailing of long bones in the multiple trauma patient is still controversial. While in the Anglo-American literature primary intramedullary nailing is regarded as the method of choice, differentiated management is preferred in German-speaking countries on account of reports about the pathogenesis of trauma shock. On the one hand, it has been shown that severe thoracic injury greatly influences the course after multiple trauma and, in particular, its combination with femoral fracture represents an increased risk. On the other hand, every surgical i

This report describes a giant cell (reparative) granuloma in the proximal phalanx of the third finger of the right hand in a 52-year-old man. Radiographically it showed aggressive features with bony permeation, breaking of the cortex, and soft tissue extension. These features suggested a malignant lesion. Histology was characteristic of giant cell reparative granuloma. This lesion, along with aneurysmal bone cyst and giant cell tumor in the small bones of hand and foot, occasionally may show aggressive features mimicking a malignant lesion.

Measurements are useful in the radiologic evaluation of the hand. They permit an objective evaluation of subtle alterations in the relative lengths of hand bones, which may be useful in the diagnosis of many congenital malformation syndromes. Evaluation of width of the carpus can be useful in the evaluation of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis as well as many bone dysplasias. Carpal angle measures, the relative position of the distal radius and ulna, as well as cortical measures of the second metacarpal have many clinical applications.

Two brothers each had one normal upper limb; one had tridactylous ectrodactyly of one hand with normal forearm bones; the other had monodactyly of one hand with absent ipsilateral ulna. Both had monodactyly of the feet, absence of the tibiae, and unilateral bifurcation of the femur. A sister of the paternal grandfather was purportedly similarly affected. Since her parents and the father and paternal grandfather of the affected boys were normal, the pattern of inheritance of the trait in this family is presently unclear.

Lipomas are common benign neoplasms affecting many adipose tissue-containing organs of the body, including bone. Central lesions in bone account for less than 1% of all lipomas. In the literature, intraosseous lipomas have been reported in various bones such as the frontal and parietal bones, ribs, ulna, phalanges of hand and foot, femoral neck, fibula and calcaneum. No preference has been described for gender or race. As far as the authors know, there have been no documented cases of intraosseous lipoma involving the temporomandibular joint. This report describes a rare case of mandibular int

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) is a pathological condition characterised by extensive periosteal new bone formation (NBF) on the diaphyses of the long bones, metacarpal and metatarsal bones. In modern clinical contexts, the secondary form of the disease is common and most often occurs secondary to intra-thoracic cancer and other forms of chronic pulmonary disease. Paleopathological evidence for HOA on the other hand has only occasionally been reported. Here we report a young adult male from the Meriotic cemetery at Berber in Sudan (2nd-3rd century CE) displaying widespread NBF on the diap

High - voltage electric burns are very rare in children. This is a report of a seven years old boy, who presented 20 days after severe burns following a contact with a high - voltage electric line during playing. He was treated for the above at another hospital and was referred for further management. His clinical examination revealed; exposed skull bones, a raw area over the right side of the chest wall and a raw area over the right upper limb, which completely exposed the distal radius and the ulnar bones. After properly explaining the purpose of the operation to his parents and getting thei

The anatomic complexity of the hand and the proximity of its structures make gunshot injuries especially prone to severe, multi-tissue damage. These injuries often involve multiple structures, including bones, tendons, nerves, and skin, simultaneously, requiring individualized and frequently staged treatment. Various reconstructive strategies are available for each affected structure. In this article, we provide an overview of treatment choices and a representative case that illustrates the clinical reasoning behind selecting among these alternatives in the context of a complex hand gunshot in

Enchondroma is the second most common benign bone tumour and the most common tumour affecting the bones of the hand. In the hand, they are most frequently found in the proximal phalanges. The case presented here is that of an expansive enchondroma in the distal phalanx of the thumb, which is rare. By operative treatment (curettage, reduction plastic and cancellous bone allografting) we were able to correct the deformity of the distal phalanx and the thumbnail almost completely, as well as improving the stability and achieving a good cosmetic result.

1. A forearm shattered by a close-range shotgun injury can be reconstructed by transposing the distal radius to the proximal ulna. 2. This surgery is considered when repair of the bones is impossible, but an effort at reconstruction is warranted as an alternative to amputation. 3. A successful forearm reconstruction not only saves the forearm, wrist, and hand, but restores a satisfactory cosmetic and functional result. 4. Because radioulnar transposition re-establishes the bony integrity, future reconstruction in the form of tendon transfers may be undertaken to improve hand and wrist function

One hundred and six cases of synbrachydactyly, 63 cases of constriction band syndrome and 69 cases of cleft hand complex were clinically and roentgenologically studied and the following results were obtained. Synbrachydactyly is a group of hand anomalies in which the bone reduction appears transversely, and its severest form is a hand missing all the hand bones and the distal portion of the forearm, and with rudimentary digits on the stump. The association of dermal syndactyly or pectoralis muscle defect frequently seen in the milder cases of synbrachydactyly would be a secondary change to mes

Cat bites at the hand are common situation in emergency departments. Neglected or poorly supported, these lesions sometimes lead to serious injuries that may compromise the function of the hand. Pasteurellamultocida is the most offending germ in these lesions, despite their sensitivity to antibiotics; it can sometimes lead to deep infections involving the skin, bones and joints. Acute carpal tunnel syndrome is exceptional after cat bite. We report a case of a 56 Year old female presenting with an acute carpal tunnel syndrome associated with compartment syndrome of the right hand 6 days after a

We have investigated the use of dolorimetry in the assessment of algodystrophy of the hand. Findings in 12 affected patients following Colles' fracture were compared with age- and sex-matched normal controls. Algodystrophy was associated with a significant increase in tenderness of both the finger joints and bones. Tenderness of the whole hand was quantified by summing the dolorimetry readings at each site within the hand and the ratio of the summed readings for the two hands was defined as the dolorimetry ratio. This ratio was highly reproducible and independent of external variables. It was

CONTEXT.—: A number of fibro-osseous and osteocartilaginous lesions, especially common in the small bones of the hand and feet, pose a diagnostic challenge and have historically been thought to be reactive lesions. However, modern molecular techniques when supplementing clinical, radiographic, and histologic evaluation suggest they may, in fact, be neoplasms.
OBJECTIVE.—: To review the clinical presentation and histopathologic, molecular, and radiologic features of selective bone lesions, focusing most specifically on subungual exostosis, florid reactive periostitis, and bizarre periosteal os
