Understanding avoidance of medical surveillance for hand-arm vibrations in Sweden: a mixed-methods approach.

INTRODUCTION: Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is a chronic disease to vessels and nerves caused by vibrations. In Sweden, the medical check-up for vibrations (MCV) implements the EU surveillance system to detect early cases. No earlier research has shown participation in MCVs, nor why MCVs is avoided. We aimed to improve the understanding on avoidance of MCVs among vibration-exposed workers. METHODS: We used a mixed method. Participation was estimated from sales data registries from the three largest occupational health services (OHS) in Sweden, comprising 50% of the market share. Exposure

The distress of psychological adaptation in nutritional management among people after esophagectomy: an interpretative phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo esophagectomy frequently encounter long-term nutrition impact symptoms (NISs) and dietary challenges resulting from anatomical and functional alterations. Although these issues adversely affect mental health, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the psychological experiences of post-esophagectomy people diagnosed with esophageal cancer regarding nutritional management to elucidate the impact of nutritional challenges on mental health. METHODS: A purposive sample of 16 who had undergone esophagectomy for

Pastoral Care Provision for Medical Students: What Is the Role of the Clinical Teaching Fellow?

BACKGROUND: The clinical teaching fellow (CTF) role is often taken by resident doctors between training programmes to develop skills within medical education. This project explored CTF experiences of pastoral care provision at one medical school in the United Kingdom (UK), specifically focusing on their own role and responsibilities to inform practical support strategies for doctors as future medical educators. METHODS: This study adopted a qualitative, hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Five focus groups were conducted at different hospital sites where medical students undertake clinical

A qualitative study on barriers and facilitators of COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy among pregnant women in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccination is crucial for pregnant women to protect against severe complications during pregnancy. However, vaccine hesitancy and refusal can affect acceptance rates among this vulnerable group, posing risks to both maternal and fetal health. This research was conducted to explore the barriers and facilitators influencing COVID-19 vaccination among Malaysian pregnant women. METHODS: This qualitative study adopted a hermeneutic phenomenological design. Nineteen pregnant women receiving antenatal care at three clinics in Kelantan between February 2024 and June 2024 were pu

The pineal gland as the hegemonikon of the microcosm: anatomical and philosophical interpretations in Descartes' works.

The pineal gland, a small, unpaired structure located at the center of the brain, was first identified as a distinct organ by Galen of Pergamon, yet its function remained obscure until the early modern period, when philosophers and physicians alike try to understand its function. This paper examines René Descartes' interpretation of the pineal gland in the treatise Le Monde and within the intellectual context of the heliocentric revolution. As research investigation methods we used social-historical documentation and hermeneutic analysis on Descartes' Le Monde and L'Homme in relation to the sc

The impact of socioeconomic inequality on access to health care for patients with advanced cancer: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: In Canada, populations experiencing socioeconomic inequality have lower rates of access to screening and diagnosis and higher mortality rates than people from higher-income areas. Limited evidence exists concerning their experiences when living with advanced cancer. We explored how socioeconomic inequality shapes the experiences of patients with advanced cancer. METHODS: We utilized a qualitative study design that combined tenets of hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry and critical theory. Four individuals with advanced cancer from low-income neighborhoods, three family members, an

Children with otitis media in Greenland - A qualitative study of parental experiences.

INTRODUCTION: The Greenlandic population has one of the world's highest prevalence of otitis media (OM). Approximately 9-14% of all children suffer from OM during childhood. Due to the climate, lack of infrastructure, and minimal access to specialist services, the Greenlandic healthcare system operates under significant challenges. To support treatment implementation, we explored parental experiences of having a child with recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM) and chronic suppurative otitis media in Greenland (CSOM). METHODS: We applied a qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews,

Scaling and Sustaining Facilitated Telemedicine to Expand Treatment Access Among Underserved Populations: A Qualitative Study.

Background: Opioid treatment programs are an essential component of the management of opioid use disorder (OUD). They have also been proposed as "medical homes" to expand health care access for underserved populations. We utilized telemedicine as a method to increase access for hepatitis C virus (HCV) care among people with OUD. Methods: We interviewed 30 staff and 15 administrators regarding the integration of facilitated telemedicine for HCV into opioid treatment programs. Participants provided feedback and insight for sustaining and scaling facilitated telemedicine for people with OUD. We u

Threat and adaptation: The maternal lived experience of continuing pregnancy after receiving a prenatal diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum.

One stated objective of prenatal screening and diagnosis is the preparation for delivering a baby with medical needs or disability, however, psychosocial outcomes of parents who received a prenatal diagnosis suggest that this objective is not yet realised. Preparation may be complicated by diagnostic and prognostic uncertainty. A prenatal diagnosis that includes significant uncertainty due to the heterogeneous presentations, classifications, causes and outcomes is agenesis of the corpus callosum. As a neuroanatomical anomaly identified in the second or third trimesters, the diagnosis is likely

Living through liminality? Situating the transitional experience of parents of children with mucopolysaccharidoses.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are rare inherited metabolic disorders that come under category three of life-limiting conditions. Children born with this condition show no symptoms at birth, but its effects show as a progressive disease in subsequent years. The severity of the condition varies according to the specific type, ranging from very mild symptoms to, in most cases, complex healthcare needs, including mental and physical disabilities. AIMS: This study aimed to elucidate the meanings of the transition experience of being a parent of a child with MPS. Van Gennep's three-stage

Challenges to nutrition management among patients using antiretroviral therapy in primary health 'centres' in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A phenomenological study.

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional management is a fundamental practice of concern to all patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The nature of HIV/AIDS and malnutrition impacts are interlocked and intensify one another. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore nutrition management challenges among people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in primary health centres in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We used a hermeneutic (interpretive) phenomenological study design. The study used in-depth interviews to describe lived experiences among adult patients ag

A 'near-life experience': lived experiences of spirituality from the perspective of people who have been subject to inpatient psychiatric care.

AIMS: To describe lived experiences of spirituality from the perspective of people who have been subject to inpatient psychiatric care and to interpret these experiences from an understanding of health as dialectical. METHODS: After approval from a regional ethical board, eleven participants were recruited from two organisations for people with mental health problems. Participants were asked to narrate about spiritual experiences and occasions where such experiences had come close. The transcribed interviews were analysed by means of a phenomenological hermeneutical approach. FINDINGS: A str

The meaning of living with uncertainty for people with motor neurone disease.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the meaning of living with uncertainty for people diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). BACKGROUND: Motor neurone disease is a progressive neurodegenerative condition resulting in multiple needs, arising from the complex nature of the disease trajectory. People with MND are often required to make decisions for symptom management and end-of-life care. Research into the lived experience of MND has previously highlighted the following: the shock of receiving such a diagnosis and prognosis; subsequent concerns relating to the future and loss; and the existent

When trauma, spirituality, and mental illness intersect: A qualitative case study.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have identified spirituality to be a helpful resource for dealing with various types of trauma experiences. This coincides with a heightened focus on the role of spirituality within trauma-related theory (e.g., spiritual coping, meaning-making, and posttraumatic growth). Little remains known, however, about the relationship between trauma and spirituality among people with severe psychiatric disorders. Meanwhile, a high percentage of those with psychiatric disabilities are known to have trauma histories, whereas a majority self-identify as spiritual and/or religious. METHOD

Disabled children and adolescents may be outsiders in the community.

BACKGROUND: Most children with neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunctions suffer from myelomeningocele and shunted hydrocephalus. Fewer such births and better treatment have led to more children reaching adulthood. Increased knowledge about their lived experiences can direct support to help them. AIM: The study aims to investigate how children and adolescents aged between 10 and 18 years old with neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction live their everyday life. METHODS: Hermeneutic phenomenology was appropriate to investigate the participants' experiences in depth. Thirteen qualitative inter

Experiences of micturition problems, indwelling catheter treatment and sexual life consequences in men with prostate cancer.

Men with prostate cancer (n=25) were interviewed, focusing on experiences of micturition problems, indwelling catheter treatment and sexual life consequences. Narrations were found to be practical and technical descriptions rather than emotional, and experiences were described with reduction and negligence regarding personal well-being and the impact of problems. Phenomenological-hermeneutic analysis was used and findings ordered in subthemes and themes of meaning. Micturition problems, catheter treatment and sexual life problems were all phenomena that radically affected the clients' autonomy

"Knowledge was clearly associated with education." epistemic positioning in the context of informed choice: a scoping review and secondary qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Being able to measure informed choice represents a mechanism for service evaluation to monitor whether informed choice is achieved in practice. Approaches to measuring informed choice to date have been based in the biomedical hegemony. Overlooked is the effect of epistemic positioning, that is, how people are positioned as credible knowers in relation to knowledge tested as being relevant for informed choice. AIMS: To identify and describe studies that have measured informed choice in the context of prenatal screening and to describe epistemic positioning of pregnant people in the
