Citric acid and hydrogen sulfide cooperate to mitigate chromium stress in tomato plants by modulating the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, chromium sequestration, and subcellular allocation of chromium.

The study aimed to investigate the role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in regulating chromium stress (Cr-S) tolerance of tomato plants treated with citric acid (CA). Prior to the Cr treatment, tomato plants were foliar-fed with CA (100 μM) daily for 3 days. Subsequently, the plants were grown for another ten days in a hydroponic system in a 50 μM Cr (VI) solution. Chromium treatment reduced photosynthetic pigments and plant biomass, but boosted the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) malondialdehyde (MDA), H2S, phytochelatins (PCs), and glutathione (GSH), electrolyte leakage (EL), and antioxidant en

Magnesium deficiency stress in rice can be alleviated by partial nitrate nutrition supply.

The problem of nitrogen (N) excess and magnesium (Mg) deficiency in farmland is becoming more common, severe, and widespread in southern China. Magnesium is known to be an essential nutrient for higher plants; however, the physiological responses of field crops to Mg deficiency, particularly to its interaction with N forms, remain largely unknown. In this study, a hydroponic experiment was conducted using three Mg levels (0.01, 1.00, and 5.00 mM) and three nitrate/ammonium ratios (NO3-/NH4+ of 0/100, 25/75, and 50/50) under greenhouse conditions. The results show that Mg deficiency (0.01 mM) c

Behaviors of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine (6:2 FTAB) in wheat seedlings: Bioaccumulation, biotransformation and ecotoxicity.

As a new alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine (6:2 FTAB) has been currently used in industrial and consumer applications, which has been frequently detected in environment media. However, the behaviors of 6:2 FTAB in plants are still unclear. This study investigated the bioaccumulation, biotransformation and ecotoxicity of 6:2 FTAB in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) by hydroponic exposure. 6:2 FTAB was easily taken up by roots with the root concentration factor (RCF) as high as 94.8, but difficult to be acropetally translocated in the shoots

Combined Impact of Excess Zinc and Cadmium on Elemental Uptake, Leaf Anatomy and Pigments, Antioxidant Capacity, and Function of Photosynthetic Apparatus in Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea L.).

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) is a medicinal plant that has the potential to be used for phytoextraction of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) from contaminated soils by accumulating these metals in its tissues. Additionally, it has been found to be more tolerant to excess Zn than to Cd stress alone; however, the interactive effects of the combined treatment with Zn and Cd on this medicinal herb, and the protective strategies of Zn to alleviate Cd toxicity have not yet been established in detail. In this study, clary sage plants grown hydroponically were simultaneously exposed to Zn (900 µM) and Cd (

Uptake kinetics and accumulation of pesticides in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.): Impact of chemical and plant properties.

Plant uptake is an important process in determining the transfer of pesticides through a food chain. Understanding how crops take up and translocate pesticides is critical in developing powerful models to predict pesticide accumulation in agricultural produce and potential human exposure. Herein, wheat was selected as a model plant species to investigate the uptake and distribution of eleven widely used pesticides in a hydroponic system as a function of time for 144 h. The time-dependent uptake kinetics of these pesticides were fitted with a first-order 1-compartment kinetic model. During 144

Selenium addition alters mercury uptake, bioavailability in the rhizosphere and root anatomy of rice (Oryza sativa).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mercury (Hg) is an extremely toxic pollutant, especially in the form of methylmercury (MeHg), whereas selenium (Se) is an essential trace element in the human diet. This study aimed to ascertain whether addition of Se can produce rice with enriched Se and lowered Hg content when growing in Hg-contaminated paddy fields and, if so, to determine the possible mechanisms behind these effects. METHODS: Two cultivars of rice (Oryza sativa, japonica and indica) were grown in either hydroponic solutions or soil rhizobags with different Se and Hg treatments. Concentrations of total

Spatiotemporal analysis of copper homeostasis in Populus trichocarpa reveals an integrated molecular remodeling for a preferential allocation of copper to plastocyanin in the chloroplasts of developing leaves.

Plastocyanin, which requires copper (Cu) as a cofactor, is an electron carrier in the thylakoid lumen and essential for photoautotrophic growth of plants. The Cu microRNAs, which are expressed during Cu deprivation, down-regulate several transcripts that encode for Cu proteins. Since plastocyanin is not targeted by the Cu microRNAs, a cofactor economy model has been proposed in which plants prioritize Cu for use in photosynthetic electron transport. However, defects in photosynthesis are classic symptoms of Cu deprivation, and priorities in Cu cofactor delivery have not been determined experim

Growth and nutrition of birch seedlings at varied relative addition rates of magnesium.

Growth and nutrition of hydroponically cultivated birch seedlings (Betula pendula Roth.) were investigated at various magnesium (Mg) availabilities. Suboptimum Mg conditions were created by adding Mg once per hour in exponentially increasing amounts at one of four relative addition rates (R(Mg)): 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 or 0.20 day(-1). Seedlings given free access to Mg were used as controls. After an acclimation period, the relative growth rate of the seedlings attained the same value as the corresponding relative rate of Mg addition. In all suboptimum Mg treatments, deficiency symptoms in the form

Auxin herbicides induce H(2)O(2) overproduction and tissue damage in cleavers (Galium aparine L.).

The phytotoxic effects of auxin herbicides, including the quinoline carboxylic acids quinmerac and quinclorac, the benzoic acid dicamba and the pyridine carboxylic acid picloram, were studied in relation to changes in phytohormonal ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) levels and the production of H(2)O(2) in cleavers (Galium aparine). When plants were root-treated with 10 microM quinmerac, ethylene synthesis was stimulated in the shoot tissue, accompanied by increases in immunoreactive levels of ABA and its precursor xanthoxal. It has been demonstrated that auxin herbicide-stimulated ethylene trig

The trojan horse in agricultural water: How microbe-mediated interactions of nanoplastics and flame retardants drive multiscale toxicity and seed transmission in rye.

Agricultural irrigation water serves as a critical vector for the co-transport of emerging contaminants like nanoplastics and organophosphate flame retardants, posing a poorly understood risk to crop safety and water quality. This study employed a combination of hydroponic exposure (simulating contaminated irrigation), long-term cultivation, multi-omics (transcriptomics and metabolomics), physiological assays, and computational simulations to elucidate the multiscale toxic mechanisms of aminated polystyrene nanoplastics (NPs-NH₂) and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TEP) in rye. Cultivation System Dominates Cucumber Performance and Root-Zone Microbiomes Across Biochar Particle Sizes.

Hydroponic (HP) and aquaponic (AQ) systems are widely known in greenhouse production; however, the combined effects of nutrient delivery system and substrate physical structure on crop performance and root-zone microbiomes remain insufficiently understood. Substrate physical properties influence water retention and aeration, which can affect root-associated microorganisms, plant growth, and yield. This study evaluated cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) growth, yield, nutrient dynamics, physiological stress responses, and bacterial community composition under HP and AQ systems using bamboo-derived b

Coordinated Regulation of Iron Homeostasis, Antioxidant Defenses and Hormone Signaling Underlies Pepper Responses to Iron Deficiency and Excess.

Iron availability strongly influences crop performance, yet the mechanisms in non-model horticultural species remain unclear. We combined morphological, physiological, and root transcriptome analyses to dissect the response of Capsicum annuum L. cultivar CA#8 to iron deficiency, low iron, and excess iron. Seedlings grown hydroponically under four iron supplies (0, 5, 25, and 150 μM EDTA-Fe) showed distinct shoot and root phenotypes: iron deficiency caused interveinal chlorosis and strong inhibition of root growth, excess iron induced leaf wrinkling with white spots and reduced root development

Seed Zone Nutritional Sensitivity and Hormone-Independent Rooting in Sugar Pine (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.): A Two-Phase Evaluation of Nutrient Solutions and Rooting Environments.

Clonal propagation of rust-resistant sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.) is currently limited by extreme rooting recalcitrance and highly variable donor responses to nursery management. This study identified seed zone-specific nutritional sensitivities and evaluated rooting success; we hypothesized that northern seed sources would exhibit greater sensitivity to high nutrient loads and that stable microclimates would outperform high-intensity rooting systems. In Study 1, seedlings from five United States Department of Agriculture seed zones were grown for 27 weeks in five nutrient solutions (

Dual-metal phytoremediation of cadmium and nickel by wetland macrophytes: Comparative evaluation, metal uptake dynamics, and process optimization.

Escalating heavy metal contamination of aquatic environments presents a significant threat to ecosystem integrity and public health, yet existing treatment technologies remain economically and technically inadequate for the efficient removal of low-concentration metal pollutants from wastewater. This study evaluated the phytoremediation potential of two macrophytes, Hymenachne amplexicaulis (Olive Hymenachne) and Pogonatherum paniceum (Bamboo Grass), for the removal of cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) from synthetic wastewater under hydroponic conditions. Experiments were conducted over 21 days un

YOLO-based high-throughput phenotyping pipeline for soybean nodulation traits in genomic research.

The symbiotic interaction between soybean (Glycine max) and Bradyrhizobium japonicum results in the formation of root nodules, specialized organs that house nitrogen-fixing bacteria converting atmospheric N2 into plant-accessible ammonia (NH3). Accurate quantification of nodule traits is essential for understanding host-microbe interactions and genetic determinants of nodulation. However, traditional manual or semi-quantitative approaches are labor-intensive, subjective, and unsuitable for large-scale studies. Here, we present a high-throughput phenotyping pipeline based on the YOLO deep learn

Turnip mosaic virus alters phosphorus metabolism and shoot-root allocation without resource competition.

Plant viruses affect production through symptom induction in host plants. These symptoms could partially arise from nutrient deprivation: The resource competition hypothesis posits that massive viral replication deprives hosts of essential nutrients, yet direct evidence for phosphorus (P) competition is lacking. Moreover, it is reported that biotic stresses can lead to alterations on P metabolism. Using a hydroponic system enabling separate analysis of shoots and roots in adult Arabidopsis thaliana plants, we investigated whether Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) drawed significant P internal pools l

Dissolved oxygen thresholds drive adaptive functional trait remodeling in mesophytes via anatomical, physiological, and metabolic synergies.

Climate-exacerbated urban waterlogging imposes severe hypoxic stress on mesophytes. However, whether mesophytes possess dissolved oxygen (DO)-driven mechanisms for adaptive structural and physiological remodeling remains poorly understood. We conducted a hydroponic experiment with four representative mesophyte species (Gardenia jasminoides, Murraya paniculata, Ixora chinensis, and Heptapleurum actinophyllum 'Variegata') across four DO gradients (0-2, 2-4, 4-6, and 6-8 mg/L). Plant growth, physiology, and root anatomy were measured, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to disentan

Combined Effect of CuO Nanoparticles and Lighting on the Growth and Antioxidant Potential of Lettuce in CEA.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are becoming more commonly used in agricultural practices for cultivating plants under Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). The foliar application of copper oxide (CuO) NPs can enhance the production of bioactive compounds in lettuce without adversely affecting yield. However, there is a lack of data regarding the effects of NPs on plants under various lighting conditions, which is a crucial aspect of CEA. The study aims to find out how different lighting conditions can lead to Cu accumulation, to determine the effects of CuO NPs on lettuce growth, antioxidant potentia

Comparative Effects of High-Molecular-Weight Chitosan and Chitosan Oligosaccharide Lactate on Metabolic Adjustment and Salinity Tolerance in Cucumis sativus L.

Salinity is one of the most harmful abiotic factors limiting crop productivity. Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide biostimulant able to alleviate salt stress, but its efficiency depends on its physicochemical properties, which remain insufficiently understood. The present study aimed to determine whether two chemically distinct forms of chitosan, i.e., high-molecular-weight chitosan (ChT) and chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChL), differentially mitigate the adverse effects of NaCl-induced salinity in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Plants were grown hydroponically under control conditions o

Phytostabilization potential and microbial response to the reclamation of native Cynodon dactylon in spoil heaps from a multiple-metal mining site in Southwest China.

Phytocapping offers a sustainable approach for managing exposed tailings by mitigating pollutant spread and enhancing phytoremediation. This study investigates the potential of Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) as a pioneering plant for rehabilitating tailings from an open-pit lead-zinc mine in Southwest China. Our findings demonstrate that Bermudagrass significantly improved soil quality and multifunctionality compared to adjacent bare tailings. Soil improvements included increases in organic matter (107%), total and available nitrogen (50% and 110%, respectively), available phosphorus (170%),
