Psychological Treatments and Psychotherapies in the Neurorehabilitation of Pain: Evidences and Recommendations from the Italian Consensus Conference on Pain in Neurorehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: It is increasingly recognized that treating pain is crucial for effective care within neurological rehabilitation in the setting of the neurological rehabilitation. The Italian Consensus Conference on Pain in Neurorehabilitation was constituted with the purpose identifying best practices for us in this context. Along with drug therapies and physical interventions, psychological treatments have been proven to be some of the most valuable tools that can be used within a multidisciplinary approach for fostering a reduction in pain intensity. However, there is a need to elucidate what

Therapeutic Groups to Help People Forgive Others: A Case Study.

Most people have been harmed by another at some point in their lives. Many of these hurts linger in the lives of those who were hurt, through anger, fear, and rumination. Forgiving others, when it is safe and prudent to do so, can be one route toward healing these past hurts. Group therapy has specific strengths that might help people to effectively forgive others. One of those strengths is the creation of therapeutic factors. In the current paper we discuss how group forgiveness interventions and the development of three specific therapeutic factors (universality, cohesion, and altruism) can

Psychosocial Approaches for Sexual Health and Intimate Relationships Among Patients With Serious Mental Illness.

INTRODUCTION: The sexual health and behavior and the intimate relationships of patients diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI) have been described as ongoing and often ignored concerns in mental health treatment. Evidence-based psychosocial interventions have emerged as effective complimentary approaches to address symptoms of SMI in conjunction with psychopharmacology, yet rarely do they address sexual concerns in a targeted manner. AIM: This systematic review explores the scope and efficacy of psychosocial interventions designed to address sexual health and behavior and intimate rela

Social and psychological support adjunctive to lithium therapy: a critical review.

As lithium therapy becomes more and more widely used for the treatment and control of recurrent mania and depression, the question of whether or not therapeutic outcome may be enhanced by the provision of supportive psychotherapy or other adjunctive social measures has gained in importance. Reports of psychological and social support given to patients receiving lithium therapy are reviewed critically and the question is raised as to the economics of providing such non-pharmacological back-up as a routine concomitant of lithium therapy. Some consideration is given to the psychological mechanism

Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy-Eating Disorder (MIT-ED) in the Case of a Woman With Binge Eating Disorder and Avoidant and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) needs more effective empirically supported treatments, given problems with attrition from and response to available options. One avenue to improve adherence and response is considering comorbid personality disorders, given their impact on the therapy relationship and on patients' capacities to comply with homework, for example, regularizing eating habits or abstaining from bingeing. We describe here the case of a woman in her thirties suffering from BED, and avoidant and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders, treated with Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy for

Changes in mentalization in patients with personality disorders during sequential brief-Adlerian psychodynamic psychotherapy: The role of therapists' technique and countertransference.

UNLABELLED: Mentalization, that is the capacity to understand our and others' behaviors in terms of intentional mental states, represents one of the core features of personality disorders (PDs) and can be related to therapists' countertransference (CT) and interventions. AIMS: The aim of the present work was to study the relationship between therapists' technique, therapists' CT, and patients' mentalization, in a sample of patients with PDs undergoing a 40-session program of sequential brief-adlerian psychodynamic psychotherapy, a psychodynamic therapeutic model specifically developed for the

Get secure soon: attachment in abused adolescents and young adults before and after trauma-focused cognitive processing therapy.

Severe posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are connected to a variety of health-related and interpersonal problems, among them are the insecure attachment orientations. However, psychotherapy seems to improve not only PTSS but also attachment insecurities. In a large multicenter, randomized clinical trial, the attachment characteristics and PTSS of 85 adolescents and young adults (aged 14-21 years) with clinically relevant abuse-related PTSS were assessed at study entry, at the end of treatment, and 3 months after the end of treatment. Participants were randomized either to a developmentally

Dispositional Empathy Among Psychotherapists: A Latent Profile Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined therapists' dispositional empathy profiles and how they differ based on professional and personal characteristics. METHOD: A total of 376 clinicians was recruited for this study. Dispositional empathy was assessed with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). Profiles were generated using latent profile analysis. Predictors of profiles were assessed with multiple self-report questionnaires measuring demographic and professional characteristics, romantic attachment styles, five-factor personality traits and vulnerable narcissism. RESULTS: A four-profile solutio

Current and emerging directions in the treatment of eating disorders.

Eating disorders are a significant source of psychiatric morbidity in young women and demonstrate high comorbidity with mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Thus, clinicians may encounter eating disorders in the context of treating other conditions. This review summarizes the efficacy of current and emerging treatments for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). Treatment trials were identified using electronic and manual searches and by reviewing abstracts from conference proceedings. Family based therapy has demonstrated superiority for adolescent

Management of functional somatic syndromes.

Although functional somatic syndromes (FSS) show substantial overlap, treatment research is mostly confined to single syndromes, with a lack of valid and generally accepted diagnostic criteria across medical specialties. Here, we review management for the full variety of FSS, drawn from systematic reviews and meta-analyses since 2001, and give recommendations for a stepped care approach that differentiates between uncomplicated and complicated FSS. Non-pharmacological treatments involving active participation of patients, such as exercise and psychotherapy, seem to be more effective than those

Sexual dysfunction associated with antidepressant drugs.

The term 'sexual dysfunction' describes a disturbance in sexual desire and the psychophysiological changes that characterise the normal sexual response cycle, and cause marked personal distress and interpersonal difficulty. Epidemiological studies indicate that sexual dysfunction is common in the general population, but more common in depressed individuals in community settings and clinical samples. Most antidepressant drugs have adverse effects on sexual function, but accurate identification of the incidence of treatment-emergent dysfunction has proved troublesome. Futhermore, investigations

Impact of Cluster C personality disorders on outcomes of contrasting brief psychotherapies for depression.

Twenty-seven of 114 depressed clients, stratified for severity of depression, obtained a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed.; DSM-III; American Psychiatric Association, 1980) diagnosis of Cluster C personality disorder--that is, avoidant, obsessive-compulsive or dependent personality disorder (PD clients)--whereas the remaining 87 did not (non-personality-disorder [NPD] clients). All clients completed either 8 or 16 sessions of cognitive-behavioral (CB) or psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) psychotherapy. On most measures, PD clients began with more severe symptomatolo

[Psychotherapy of Asperger syndrome in adults].

There is an increase in awareness in professionals that the Asperger syndrome (AS) in adulthood is associated with specific problems and burdens which may well differ from those in childhood and adolescence. The core symptoms of AS generally persist into adulthood, however in contrast to childhood and adolescence there is no specific support system for adults in Germany. Also the environment of the afflicted patient changes thus producing different challenges and problems. In addition a subgroup of patients with high functioning AS primarily presents in adulthood generally due to secondary psy

A comparison of sequenced individual and group psychotherapy for patients with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the effectiveness of individual (IND) versus group (GRP) therapy for patients with bulimia nervosa (BN), using a manual of sequenced treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) followed by interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). METHOD: Eighty-six participants with BN were matched and randomized to 23 sessions of IND or GRP. Participants were measured pretreatment and posttreatment and at 1-year and 2.5-year follow-ups using both intent-to-treat and completer samples. RESULTS: The intent-to-treat analysis revealed that the percentage of participants rec

Technology and the clinical encounter: a qualitative study of mental health clinician and patient experiences of telemedicine.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread use of telehealth, particularly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been little published evidence about the effect of telehealth on the therapeutic relationship and clinician and patient interaction. This study sought to identify the divergence in this mode of communication compared with in-person interaction for both clinicians and patients. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative interview study of 22 mental health practitioners (registered psychologists or psychiatrists) in Australia who have treated patients using psychotherapy in-person and using te

Heterogeneity of emotional cultivation strategies as a group composition variable among Taiwanese youth.

This study examined the role of group composition in an emotional cultivation intervention (i.e., BEAR group: Belief reframing, Emotional consequence awareness, Action control, and Regulating emotion flexibly through culturally appropriate strategies), a manualized group counseling and psychotherapy model developed for Taiwanese youth's emotion regulation difficulties. Guided by the Eastern philosophical principle of the "unity of knowing and acting" (Y. Wang, 1527/2006), BEAR groups integrate understanding emotion connotations (knowing) and cultivating emotion strategies (acting) as interdepe

Integrating Phenomenological Psychopathology and Group Visual Art Therapy for Patients with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing need to translate insights from phenomenological psychopathology into psychotherapeutic practice. Phenomenology offers a deeper understanding of the lived experience of psychosis, and this understanding can render psychotherapy more individualized, empathically attuned, and recovery oriented by attending to experiential dimensions that conventional, symptom-focused approaches may overlook. In this study, we report qualitative findings of patients' lived experiences of group visual art therapy, which we conceptualize as structured phenomenological art therapy. T

Exploring Psilocybin-Assisted Schema Therapy: A Conceptual Framework for Potential Therapeutic Synergies in Personality Disorders.

Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by rigid and maladaptive patterns of self- and interpersonal functioning, leading to high clinical burden and limited treatment outcomes. Schema Therapy (ST), an integrative psychotherapy rooted in cognitive-behavioral principles, conceptualizes PDs in terms of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS)-pervasive cognitive-affective structures formed through unmet emotional needs-and schema modes, dynamic states organizing emotion, belief, and behavior. Evidence indicates moderate efficacy of ST, mainly for borderline personality disorder, with limited resear

Outpatient care for adolescents' and young adults' mental health: promoting self- and others' understanding through a metacognitive interpersonal therapy-informed psychological intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological distress may result in impairment and difficulty understanding oneself and others. Thus, addressing metacognitive issues in psychotherapy may improve psychopathology in adolescents and young adults (AYAs). We aimed to compare metacognitive interpersonal therapy (MIT)-informed psychotherapy with other treatment-as-usual (TAU) therapies. METHODS: We administered the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale, the Clinical Global Impressions-Severity (CGI-S) scale, and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) at baseline (BL) and at treatment termination (the endpo
