Many children with oral language difficulties also experience challenges with word reading, as evidenced in the high comorbidity rate between developmental language disorders and dyslexia. The current study investigated a sample of students (n = 357) with language and literacy difficulties classified into latent classes based on pre-intervention performance on word reading and listening comprehension measures. Specifically, this study sought to determine the extent to which latent classes responded to an evidence-based, narrative language program at immediate post-test and a five-month follow-

This study explored language profiles in a sample of Norwegian children born with orofacial cleft. A total of 38 children, median age 71 months, were assessed by the Children's Communication Checklist Second Edition. Altogether 36.8% was identified with language impairment. The results showed that the group mean was lower than the normative mean on all pragmatic subscales as well as on the composite score, indicating that impaired pragmatic skills are common in children with OFC. However, great variability was found within the group with individual results ranging from severely impaired to wel

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to examine potential mediators of the relationship between developmental language disorder (DLD) status and executive function performance.
METHOD: Participants included preschoolers, of whom 80 met the diagnostic criteria for DLD and 103 were categorized as having typical language abilities. Participants' nonverbal IQ and receptive vocabulary were assessed via standardized tests, and their executive function was tested using the Dimensional Change Card Sort. Maternal education was collected via caregiver report and served as a measure of socioeconomic stat

PURPOSE: There is a growing body of research on developmental language disorder (DLD), but very few studies have focused on the role of cognitive abilities in adulthood. The present study explored the relationship between cognition and language in adults with and without DLD.
METHOD: Sixty participants, 30 language typical (LT) adults and 30 with DLD, completed a battery of online cognitive and language assessments. Cognitive tasks included language analytic ability (the ability to recognize the grammatical functions of sentence elements), nonverbal IQ, explicit learning of form-meaning pairi

A critical problem for Catalan-Spanish bilinguals is the lack of assessment tools to conduct valid and accurate oral language evaluations. The purpose of this preliminary study was to provide pilot data for a new potential assessment tool in Catalan. We examined the possibility that two novel tasks, a grammatical correction (GramCorr) and morphological productivity (MP; nonword and word subtasks), could differentiate between Catalan-speaking children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD) with good diagnostic accuracy. Twenty-seven school-aged children with DLD (Mage = 9;1 year

PURPOSE: Prior work has identified weaknesses in commonly used indices of lexical diversity in spoken language samples, such as type-token ratio (TTR) due to sample size and elicitation variation, we explored whether TTR and other diversity measures, such as number of different words/100 (NDW), vocabulary diversity (VocD), and the moving average TTR would be more sensitive to child age and clinical status (typically developing [TD] or developmental language disorder [DLD]) if samples were obtained from standardized prompts.
METHOD: We utilized archival data from the norming samples of the Tes

PURPOSE: This lead article of the Clinical Forum focuses on the research that supports why speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are an integral part of the overarching curriculum for all students in schools.
METHOD: Focus on education has shifted to student performance in our global world, specifically in college and career readiness standards. This article reviews recommendations on best practice from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association on SLPs' roles in schools, as well as data on school-based services. Implementation of these practices as it is applicable to school initiatives

PURPOSE: To explore the efficacy of a word learning intervention for late-talking toddlers that is based on principles of cross-situational statistical learning.
METHODS: Four late-talking toddlers were individually provided with 7-10 weeks of bi-weekly word learning intervention that incorporated principles of cross-situational statistical learning. Treatment was input-based meaning that, aside from initial probes, children were not asked to produce any language during the sessions. Pre-intervention data included parent-reported measures of productive vocabulary and language samples. Data co

This study investigated early language profiles in two groups of children with developmental disability: children with Down Syndrome (DS, n=13) and children with Language Impairment (LI, n=16). Vocabulary and grammatical skills in the two groups were assessed and compared to language skills of typically developing (TD) children matched on size of either their receptive or expressive vocabulary (n=58). The study aimed to establish if language development in these groups is delayed or fundamentally different than the TD groups, and if the group with DS showed a similar language profile to the gr

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who have native exposure to a sign language such as American Sign Language (ASL) have received almost no scientific attention. This paper reports the first studies on a sample of five native-signing children (four deaf children of deaf parents and one hearing child of deaf parents; ages 4;6 to 7;5) diagnosed with ASD. A domain-general deficit in the ability of children with ASD to replicate the gestures of others is hypothesized to be a source of palm orientation reversal errors in sign. In Study 1, naturalistic language samples were collected from

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Down syndrome (DS) are among the most common types of neurodevelopmental conditions that have co-occurring language impairments. Usually, non-verbal IQ has been reported as one of the main predictors of language functioning in children with these conditions. Although language abilities of children with ASD and DS have been described in the previous studies, there is still a lack of direct comparisons of language profiles in the non-verbal IQ-matched groups of children with these disorders, and, therefore, it is largely unexplored whether language

PURPOSE: This study compared pragmatic language in youths (9-17 years) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those with typical development (TD) on the Yale in vivo Pragmatic Protocol (YiPP), a semistructured, dynamic conversational assessment.
METHOD: Participants (n = 118) were divided into groups based on age and diagnosis. Each completed the YiPP, which included 4 pragmatic domains (discourse management, communicative functions, conversational repair, presupposition). The participant's response to each probe was scored correct or incorrect; incorrect scores elicited cues from the examin

BACKGROUND: A randomized controlled trial was conducted of a whole-service cohort of children referred to the Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service of Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust between January 1999 and April 2000. The 730 children involved, aged up to 16 years, were diagnosed with primary speech and/or language impairment in the absence of any learning, physical or sensory difficulty.
AIMS: The study considered outcomes of treatment versus no treatment.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: Treatment involved clinic-based interventions, provided according to local departmental criteria and c

PURPOSE: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a lifelong condition that when impacting educational performance is identified and serviced through U.S. schools as outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. A few examples of educational categories that refer to DLD are (a) speech or language impairment (S/LI) and (b) specific learning disability (SLD). In this research note, we aim to examine trends in how these categories are assigned.
METHOD: We analyzed publicly available data released by the U.S. Department of Education from six school years between 2010 and 2020. We e

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of electropalatography (EPG) intervention in targeting specific phonemes/words in seven adolescents aged 14:10-18:06 with co-occurring speech sound and language disorders. Progress on individualised targets versus controls was evaluated following intervention undertaken as part of the participants' usual speech and language therapy provision. As a group, the participants showed significantly greater progress on their targets than controls, indicating that the EPG intervention was effective. However, performance varied between participants, targets a

Describing how caregivers' talk to their autistic children, and how their talk may influence social and language outcomes, has important implications for developmental theory and intervention research. In this systematic literature review, we examine 294 caregiver talk variables extracted from 65 studies, provide a narrative overview of research findings, and link measurement approaches to various theories of language development. The majority of variables included only talk directed to children (90%), and specified the speech act being performed (57%). More than one-third of variables measure

Prospective studies of development following early focal brain injury have identified deficits across a range of cognitive, linguistic and affective domains. In most cases these deficits are quite subtle and often not detected on standardized behavioral tests. Nonetheless, more detailed tests of neuropsychological functioning have documented subtle, persistent profiles of impairment. These contrasting findings have been cited in defense of two conflicting beliefs: plasticity and hemispheric equipotentiality theories on one side and early hemispheric specialization on the other. This paper show
