Redundancy as a graph-based index of frequency specific MEG functional connectivity.

We used a recently proposed graph index to investigate connectivity redundancy in resting state MEG recordings. Usually, brain network analyses consider indexes linked to the shortest paths between cerebral regions. However, important information might be lost about alternative trails by neglecting longer pathways. We measured the redundancy of the connectivity by considering the multiple paths at the global level (i.e., scalar redundancy), across different path lengths (i.e., vector redundancy), and between node pairs (i.e., matrix redundancy). We applied this approach to a robust frequency d

Characterizing the Morphological Brain Network Topology in Patients With Migraine Using Wavelet Based Morphometry: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: There is compelling evidence that gray matter changes associated with migraine, which in turn may alter morphological network topology. The aim of this study is to characterize morphological network topology of the brains of migraineurs and non-migraine subjects using wavelet-based morphometry. METHODS: 3D, T1W brain images were obtained from 45 patients with migraine and 46 non-migraine subjects. Then, gray matter volume images were developed, and they were decomposed and reconstructed at a level of n = 3 using wavelet-based morphometry. 4D gray matter volumes were constr

Eye position influence on the parieto-occipital area PO (V6) of the macaque monkey.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of eye position on the activity of neurons of area PO (V6), a cortical region located in the most posterior part of the superior parietal lobule. Experiments were carried out on three awake macaque monkeys. Animals sat in a primate chair in front of a large screen, and fixated a small spot of light projected in different screen locations while the activity of single neurons was extracellularly recorded. Both visual and non-visual neurons were found. About 48% of visual and 32% of non-visual neurons showed eye position-related activity in total darkn

Morphological Alterations in the Thalamus, Striatum, and Pallidum in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with cognitive, motor, and emotional symptoms. The thalamus and basal ganglia form circuits with the cortex supporting all three of these behavioral domains. Abnormalities in the structure of subcortical regions may suggest atypical development of these networks, with implications for understanding the neural basis of ASD symptoms. Findings from previous volumetric studies have been inconsistent. Here, using advanced surface-based methodology, we investigated localized differences in shape and surface area in the basal gang

Targeting the parahippocampal area by auditory cortex stimulation in tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: The final common pathway in tinnitus generation is considered to be synchronized auditory oscillatory hyperactivity. Intracranial auditory cortex stimulation (iACS) via implanted electrodes has been developed to treat severe cases of intractable tinnitus targeting this final common pathway, in the hope of being a panacea for tinnitus. However, not everybody responds to this treatment. OBJECTIVE: The electrical brain activity and functional connectivity at rest might determine who is going to respond or not to iACS and might shed light on the pathophysiology of auditory phantom sou

Cortical stimulation in conscious rats controls joint inflammation.

The neuronal control of the immune system is fundamental to the development of new therapeutic strategies for inflammatory disorders. Recent studies reported that afferent vagal stimulation attenuates peripheral inflammation by activating specific sympathetic central and peripheral networks, but only few subcortical brain areas were investigated. In the present study, we report that afferent vagal stimulation also activates specific cortical areas, as the parietal and cingulate cortex. Since these cortical structures innervate sympathetic-related areas, we investigate whether electrical stimul

[Perisylvian magnetoencephalografic impairments in patients with autism spectrum disorders].

INTRODUCTION: The perisylvian areas, located around the Sylvian fissure, are constituted by frontal, temporal and parietal brain regions. These are connected forming specialized neural networks and play a primary role in the development of linguistic skills and social cognition. These areas are a possible neuronal substrate of cognitive and behavioral impairments in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). AIM: To locate and quantify epileptiform activity sources through magnetoencephalography in frontal perisylvian areas in children with idiopathic ASD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-eig

Neural mechanisms of foreign accent syndrome: Lesion and network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is a rare acquired speech disorder wherein an individual's spoken accent is perceived as "foreign." Most reported cases involve left frontal brain lesions, but it is known that various other lesions can also cause FAS. To determine whether heterogeneous FAS-causing lesions are localized to a common functional speech network rather than to a single anatomical site, we employed a recently validated image analysis technique known as "lesion network mapping." METHODS: We identified 25 published cases of acquired neurogenic FAS without aphasia, and mapped

Neural representations of skilled movement.

The frontal and parietal cortex are intimately involved in the representation of goal-directed movements, but the crucial neuroanatomical sites are not well established in humans. In order to identify these sites more precisely, we studied stroke patients who had the classic syndrome of ideomotor limb apraxia, which disrupts goal-directed movements, such as writing or brushing teeth. Patients with and without limb apraxia were identified by assessing errors imitating gestures and specifying a cut-off for apraxia relative to a normal control group. We then used MRI or CT for lesion localization

Seroprevalence and risk factors for HIV transmission among female prostitutes: a community survey.

To estimate the prevalence of HIV-1, HIV-2 and HTLV-I among female prostitutes, and to identify possible risk factors for HIV transmission in this collective, sera and epidemiological information from 71 prostitutes were obtained. Using the local network of a well-defined area in southern Catalonia, all prostitution bars were identified and their working women interviewed using a previously validated questionnaire. Eight sera were found positive for HIV-1 antibodies. Of those, 7 sera were also positive in the HIV-2 assay, probably as a result of cross-reactivity between the two viruses. All se

Differences in intrinsic functional organization between dorsolateral prefrontal and posterior parietal cortex.

The dorsolateral prefrontal and posterior parietal cortex are 2 components of the cortical network controlling attention, working memory, and executive function. Little is known about how the anatomical organization of the 2 areas accounts for their functional specialization. In order to address this question, we examined the strength of intrinsic functional connectivity between neurons sampled in each area by means of cross-correlation analyses of simultaneous recordings from monkeys trained to perform working memory tasks. In both areas, effective connectivity declined as a function of dista

Cortical EEG network analysis reveals stage-specific rich-club reorganization across the patients with iRBD and PD.

Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) has been recognized as a prodromal stage of Parkinson's disease (PD) - a well-known neurodegenerative brain disorder that is characterized by dysconnectivity. Elucidating how brain network topology evolves across the healthy controls (HCs)-iRBD-PD cohorts is crucial for clarifying disease-stage-related neurophysiological alterations. Using EEG source-space connectivity, we aimed to reveal the stage-specific spatio-spectral alterations of rich-club organization (the network's backbone architecture) across these three cohorts. Electrophysiological indices of aberrant error-processing in adults with ADHD: a new region of interest.

Deficits in error-processing are postulated in core symptoms of ADHD. Our goal was to investigate the neurophysiological basis of abnormal error-processing and adaptive adjustments in ADHD, and examine whether error-related alterations extend beyond traditional Regions of Interest (ROIs), particularly to those involved in adaptive adjustments, such as the Salience Network system. We obtained event-related potentials (ERPs) during a Go/NoGo task from 22 adult-ADHD patients and 29 matched healthy controls using a high-density 256-electrode array. Error-related ERPs with error-negativity (ERN) an

Peripherally driven low-threshold inhibitory inputs to lamina I local-circuit and projection neurones: a new circuit for gating pain responses.

Spinal lamina I is a key element of the pain processing system which relays primary afferent input to supraspinal areas. However, little is known about how the signal is modulated by its intrinsic network including local-circuit neurones (LCNs) and much less numerous anterolateral tract projection neurones (PNs). Here, we used whole-cell patch clamp recordings in an isolated spinal cord preparation to examine properties of identified LCNs (n = 85) and PNs (n = 73) in their functionally preserved local networks. Forty LCNs showed spontaneous rhythmic firing (2-7 Hz) at zero current injection, w

Fault tolerance in protein interaction networks: stable bipartite subgraphs and redundant pathways.

As increasing amounts of high-throughput data for the yeast interactome become available, more system-wide properties are uncovered. One interesting question concerns the fault tolerance of protein interaction networks: whether there exist alternative pathways that can perform some required function if a gene essential to the main mechanism is defective, absent or suppressed. A signature pattern for redundant pathways is the BPM (between-pathway model) motif, introduced by Kelley and Ideker. Past methods proposed to search the yeast interactome for BPM motifs have had several important limitat

Monitoring COVID-19 spread in Prague local neighborhoods based on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater collected throughout the sewer network.

Many reports have documented that the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the influents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) correlates with the actual epidemic situation in a given city. However, few data have been reported thus far on measurements upstream of WWTPs, i.e. throughout the sewer network. In this study, the monitoring of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in Prague wastewater was carried out at selected locations of the Prague sewer network from August 2020 through May 2021. Various locations such as residential areas of various sizes, hospitals, city center areas, student dormi

Network Centrality Reveals Dissociable Brain Activity during Response Inhibition in Human Right Ventral Part of Inferior Frontal Cortex.

The human right inferior frontal cortex (IFC) plays a critical role in response inhibition. It has also been demonstrated that the IFC is heterogeneous and that the ventral part of the IFC (vIFC) is more critical to inhibition of prepotent response tendency. Recent areal parcellation analyses based on resting-state functional connectivity have revealed that the right vIFC consists of multiple functional areas. In the present study, we characterized the parcellated areas (parcels) in the right vIFC using graph theory analysis, which characterizes local connectivity properties of a brain network

Extraction and Analysis of Dynamic Functional Connectome Patterns in Migraine Sufferers: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

Migraine seriously affects the physical and mental health of patients because of its recurrence and the hypersensitivity to the environment that it causes. However, the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of migraine are not fully understood. We addressed this issue in the present study using an autodynamic functional connectome model (A-DFCM) with twice-clustering to compare dynamic functional connectome patterns (DFCPs) from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from migraine patients and normal control subjects. We used automatic localization of segment points to improve the

Longitudinal change in resting-state functional brain connectivity associated with secondary sexual characteristics between ages 11 and 13 years.

Pubertal maturation drives brain development, yet longitudinal evidence linking it to resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) in early adolescence remains limited, and adolescent mental-health trajectories differ by sex, motivating sex-specific analyses. In a general-population cohort (255 adolescents scanned at Time 1; 68 girls and 70 boys with analysable two-wave data), we examined longitudinal change in rs-FC between ages ∼11.5 and ∼13.6 years, separately by sex. Whole-brain analyses were applied without predefined regions of interest, using principal component analysis (PCA) as a dat
