This study examined the conservation of expression of a 31-kDa iron-regulated protein by serotypes of Pasteurella haemolytica and Pasteurella trehalosi associated with pasteurellosis of cattle and sheep. A polyclonal antibody prepared against the purified 31-kDa periplasmic iron-regulated protein from P. haemolytica serotype A1 showed that all P. haemolytica serotypes expressed similar 31-kDa proteins with identical N-terminal sequences, whereas P. trehalosi serotypes expressed immunologically different 29-kDa proteins with a different N-terminal sequence. Antibody to the 31-kDa iron-regulated

Twenty four (24) healthy male Holstein calves (< 70 kg) were each experimentally infected by intrabronchial inoculation of 4.0 x 10(9) viable cells of Pasteurella haemolytica-AI (B122) at Time = 0 h. At 1 h following inoculation animals received either: 1) Sham treatment with sterile 0.85% saline SC (n = 12); or 2) a single injection of 10 mg tilmicosin per kg body weight (n = 12). Calves that were non-infected and tilmicosin-treated were also included for determining tilmicosin concentrations in serum and lung tissue at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48, and 72 h (n = 3-per time). In the infected calves,

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM), particularly PM2.5 and PM10, is a major environmental health concern linked to respiratory diseases in humans and animals. Northern Thailand, especially Chiang Mai, experiences recurrent seasonal air pollution from biomass burning, exposing outdoor-housed livestock to elevated ambient PM levels. The bovine upper respiratory tract (URT) harbors both commensal and opportunistic microorganisms, and disruption of this microbiota may influence susceptibility to bovine respiratory disease (BRD). However, the impact of natural PM exposure on the bovine URT microbi

«PathoCalf» represents a project promoted by the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office. It was the aim of this project to use laboratory diagnostic services for farms raising calves (dairy farms, fattening units, beef cow operations) and dealing with a herd health issue in order to obtain an overview about the spectrum of infectious agents and bacterial resistance patterns in Switzerland. From January 2015 to March 2018, the Bovine Health Service and the farm veterinarian straightened out 148 stock problems on 125 farms. For this, samples were collected from 342 animals. In addition,

Over a two-year period, Mannheimia haemolytica (MH; n = 113), Pasteurella multocida (PM; n = 47), Histophilus somni (HS; n = 41) and Mycoplasma bovis (MB; n = 227) were isolated from bovine lung tissue at necropsy from cattle raised conventionally (CON, n = 29 feedlots) or without antimicrobials [natural (NAT), n = 2 feedlots]. Excluding MB, isolates were assayed by PCR to detect the presence of 13 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes and five core genes associated with integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs). Antimicrobial susceptibility phenotypes and minimum inhibitory concentrations (M

Objective was to study, in an experimental model, the possible role of gastrointestinal nematode infection in predisposing ewes to mastitis during the lactation period. Twenty-four ewes (A or B [n=12]), free from nematode and trematode helminths, were used. Group A animals received 5000 third-stage larvae of a trichostrongylid helminth cocktail and group B ewes were unparasitised controls. Animals in group A developed gastrointestinal trichostrongylosis confirmed by >500epg in faecal samples; mean epg of group B ewes were <20 (P<0.001). Ewes were challenged by deposition of Mannheimia haemolyt

This study charted 237 fatal cases of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) observed from May 2002 to May 2003 in a single Oklahoma feed yard. Postmortem lung samples were used for agent identification and histopathology. Late in the study, 94 skin samples (ear notches) were tested for Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Bovine respiratory disease morbidity was 14.7%, and the mortality rate of all causes was 1.3%, with more than half (53.8%) attributed to BRD (0.7% total of all causes). The agents isolated were the following: Mannheimia haemolytica (25.0%), Pasteurella

The Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) population of southern Spain was surveyed for potential pathogens associated with the conjunctiva, external ear canal, as well as reproductive and upper respiratory tracts. We sampled 321 ibex (131 adult males, 100 adult females, and 90 yearlings); these included 271 apparently healthy animals and 50 that were naturally infected with Sarcoptes scabiei. A total of 688 bacterial isolates were identified (377 gram-negatives, 225 gram-positives, and 86 Mycoplasma spp.); sex, age, location, infection with S. scabiei, and disposition of the animal (free-r

Morbidity and mortality from bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and associated losses in performance and carcass merit continue to plague the beef cattle industry. Several viral/bacterial agents are responsible for BRD, and interactions occur among the agents. Viral agents often predispose animals to bacterial infections, and Mannheimia haemolytica is the most frequently isolated organism in cattle with BRD. Laboratory tests are available to characterize organisms causing BRD using easily obtained nasal swab samples. Testing for persistent infection with bovine viral diarrhea virus can be done b

BACKGROUND: Pathogens can shape their host communities over various timescales. The potential role of host–pathogen co-evolution in driving contemporary shifts in disease ecology is becoming increasingly important as host species emerge and persist outside their native ranges. In North America, Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae can cause fatal pneumonia epizootics in native bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), whereas introduced free-ranging sympatric aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) typically act as asymptomatic reservoirs. We describe the responses of two hosts with different biogeographical histories to share

OBJECTIVES: Oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) are increasing in use, yet data on potential oral health effects are scarce. We evaluated whether ONP use is associated with clinical periodontal measures and salivary microbiome dysbiosis in a field-based regional sample. We recruited firefighters, as this population has historically featured an elevated prevalence of oral tobacco use.
METHODS: In this preliminary, cross-sectional study, 26 eligible participants (100% male; ages 26-53 y) were enrolled from fire stations near Sacramento, California (USA), in April-May 2025. Clinical measures from full-

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), remains a global health concern in both human and animals. However, the absence of rapid, accurate, and highly sensitive detection methods to differentiate the major pathogens of MTBC, including M. tuberculosis, M. bovis, and BCG, poses a potential challenge.
METHODS: In this study, we have established a triplex droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) method employing three types of probe fluorophores, with targets M. tuberculosis (targeting CFP-10-ESAT-6 gene of RD1 and Rv0222 genes of RD4), M. bovis (

BACKGROUND: To what extent veterinarians active in the dairy or beef sector follow the antimicrobial therapy guidelines made available in different European countries for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) outbreaks, and whether differences in therapeutic or preventive preferences for BRD management exist, is currently unknown. Therefore, the objectives of this cross-sectional study were to compare vaccination coverage and primary antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory treatment on dairy, beef and mixed-breed farms in northern Belgium, and determine their compliance with the recommendations made by

INTRODUCTION: In this study we aimed to provide preliminary evidence on the safety and efficacy of the currently used ovine pasteurellosis vaccine in Ethiopia using clinical and pathological endpoints.
METHODS: Twenty, conventionally reared, apparently healthy, seronegative male lambs, were randomly classified into two groups of 10 animals as "vaccinated-challenged" and "unvaccinated-challenged controls". The first group received 1 mL of the licensed Pasteurella multocida biotype A based vaccine subcutaneously while the second group received phosphate-buffered saline as a placebo. Following v

Fasciola hepatica is a common parasite in cattle, and bovine fasciolosis causes significant production losses, as well as being a zoonotic disease of global importance. F. hepatica has been shown to have immunoregulatory effects and the aim of this research was to establish whether F. hepatica infection influences the response to vaccination against respiratory pathogens in calves. A total of 48 calves were randomly and equally allocated to two groups. The experimental group was infected with F. hepatica, while the other group was used as a control. At week 2 and 6 after infection calves from

Information on incidences of camel (Camelus dromedarius) diseases in Jordan is scarce. In this survey, 369 live and 156 slaughtered camels were examined in four Jordanian geographic regions and the proportion of diseased camels was calculated. Intestinal parasite ova were detected in 98% of camels; one or more species of external parasites were found on the skin of all camels; 33% had nasal myiasis; and hydatid cysts were identified in 44% of the slaughtered animals. Sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei var. cameli) and trypanasomiasis, two diseases of economic importance, were also diagnosed in

Four colostrum-deprived calves each were immunized passively with antisera to whole Pasteurella haemolytica, leukotoxin-containing supernatants of P haemolytica, P haemolytica lipopolysaccharide, or newborn calf serum. Calves were challenge exposed intrabronchially with 5 x 10(9) P haemolytica, and 24 hours later, the resulting lesions were evaluated. The greatest protection against challenge exposure was provided by the antiserum to whole P haemolytica (lesion score = 6.3), whereas newborn calf serum provided the least protection (lesion score = 28.3). Calves that received antiserum to P haem

Lipoprotein lipid and apoprotein concentrations are known to be altered during the acute-phase response. We have previously shown that the serum activity of lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and concentration of cholesteryl esters, both constituents of the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) fraction, are reduced in calves inoculated with Pasteurella haemolytica and bovine herpes virus-1, the two major pathogens for calf pneumonia. The concentration of apolipoprotein C-III (apoC-III), a low molecular mass protein component distributed mainly in the HDL fraction, was therefore examined in

The purified capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Pasteurella haemolytica A1 was examined for its ability to protect cattle from experimental challenge with logarithmic-phase P. haemolytica. Several preparations of P. haemolytica antigens were utilized in the experiment including CPS, log-phase P. haemolytica culture supernatant, P. haemolytica recombinant leucotoxin (rLKt) and various combinations of the above. CPS alone or in combination with culture supernatant or rLkt elicited no protection; rather, administration of CPS was associated with a high incidence of anaphylaxis (36% of calves). Alth
