BACKGROUND: Arsenic (As) is an extremely hazardous trace metalloid frequently found in water bodies, where it poses substantial threats to all living organisms, including fish. Its removal has therefore become a significant global challenge.
METHODS: We explored the adsorptive capacity of a copper 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate metal-organic framework supported on rice husk-derived activated carbon (Cu-BDC@AC) nanocomposite toward As toxicity in Oreochromis niloticus. Fish were exposed to As (5 mg/L), the nanocomposite (NP, 1 mg/L), or both (As + NP) via water for 3 weeks. Serum biochemical paramet

Microplastics (MPs) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) increasingly co-occur in agricultural and peri-urban soils, yet their combined effects on adsorption, mobility, bioavailability, and phytotoxicity are highly context-dependent. This review synthesizes plant-soil evidence by focusing on the interacting roles of MP polymer type, particle size and shape, aging/weathering state, soil geochemistry, dissolved organic matter, and rhizosphere processes. Across the reported studies, MP-PTE interactions show several major directions of changes: MPs may reduce PTE lability by promoting adsorption,

Antimony (Sb) is a toxic metalloid and a global pollutant. Sb exposure is known to cause pulmonary, cardiovascular, liver and kidney damage, as well as cancer. In addition, data showing neurotoxic effects of Sb have been also obtained recently. Therefore, the objective of the present review was to discuss existing epidemiological findings linking Sb exposure to brain diseases and the underlying molecular mechanisms of Sb neurotoxicity. Laboratory findings revealed neurotoxic effects of high-dose Sb exposure. Specifically, in vitro and in vivo studies show that Sb induces neuronal apoptosis thr

Arsenic, a toxic metalloid and environmental pollutant found in contaminated drinking water, food, air, and soil, induces serious health risks such as liver toxicity through oxidative stress and inflammation caused by reactive oxygen species accumulation. This study, pioneering in its focus on sodium arsenite (SA-NaAsO₂) toxicity, examines its toxic effects on Wistar albino rats and the novel protective role of royal jelly against these effects. Thirty-five male rats (seven/each in five groups): control, royal jelly (200 mg/kg), sodium arsenite (100 mg/kg), sodium arsenite + royal jelly (100 m

There are often a large number of heavy metal/metalloid ions in industrial wastewater, and arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) mixed pollution is a common combination. Ferrihydrite (Fh) is a naturally occurring adsorbent material. It has a strong adsorption effect on As, but it is not stable, and its adsorption effect on Cd is poor. This study uses silicon doping to solve the above issues. The preparation method was optimized, and the As and Cd adsorption performance of Si-Fh was explored under different adsorption times, pH conditions, As and Cd concentrations, and coexisting ion conditions (NO3- a

Chronic exposure to arsenic, a toxic metalloid frequently found in groundwater and food, represents a significant environmental health risk and has been implicated in the etiology of several cancers, including ovarian cancer. However, the precise pathways through which arsenic exerts its toxic impact on the ovary are not fully understood. This study investigates the impact of chronic arsenic exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations (75 ppb or μg/L) on primary human ovarian surface (OCE1) and fallopian tube (FNE1) cultures derived from the same donor. These heterogeneous cultures pro

Arsenic (As), an inorganic metalloid, was used historically for the treatment of psoriasis. Despite its applications, concerns regarding its toxicity and carcinogenic potential prompted its reduced utilization in modern medicine. This study aimed to develop two novel nanoparticles for topical treatment of psoriasis: arsenic nanoparticles (AsNPs) and chitosan-coated arsenic nanoparticles (Chi-AsNPs). These formulations were prepared by wet chemical method and designed to leverage As therapeutic effects in psoriasis especially its ability to accumulate in skin tissues, while using chitosan to pr

Arsenic is a toxic metalloid found in the environment in different organic and inorganic forms. Molecular mechanisms implicated in arsenic hepatotoxicity are complex but include oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy. The current study focused on the potential protective capacity of melatonin against arsenic-induced hepatotoxicity. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were allocated into control, arsenic (15 mg/kg; orally), arsenic (15 mg/kg) plus melatonin (10, 20, and 30 mg/kg; intraperitoneally), and melatonin alone (30 mg/kg) groups for 28 days. After the treatment period, the serum sample was

Intermetallic nanomaterials consist of two or more metals in a highly ordered atomic arrangement. There are many possible combinations and morphologies, and exploring their properties is an important research area. Their strict stoichiometry requirement and well-defined atom binding environment make intermetallic compounds an ideal research platform to rationally optimize catalytic performance. Making mesoporous intermetallic materials is a further advance; crystalline mesoporosity can expose more active sites, facilitate the mass and electron transfer, and provide the distinguished mesoporous

Arsenic (As3+), a metalloid abundant in environment, is classified as a group I carcinogen associated with several common human cancers, including cancers in lung, skin, bladder, liver, and prostate (Wei et al., 2019). The mechanisms of As3+-induced carcinogenesis had been extensively studied, and different mechanisms might be involved in different types of cancer (Wei et al., 2019). Recent studies showed that exposure to a high dose of arsenic is able to induce lung cancer. Meanwhile, prolonged exposure to a low concentration of arsenic can increase the risk of lung cancer also (Liao et al.,

Ceramic nanomaterials are nanoscale inorganic metalloid solids that can be synthesised by heating at high temperatures followed by rapid cooling. Since the first nanoceramics were developed in the 1980s, ceramic nanomaterials have rapidly become one of the core nanomaterials for research because of their versatility in application and use in technology. Researchers are developing ceramic nanomaterials for dental use because ceramic nanoparticles are more stable and cheaper in production than metallic nanoparticles. Ceramic nanomaterials can be used to prevent dental caries because some of them

Heavy metals exposure has been associated with liver dysfunction in recent reports, while the hepatoxicity of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) has been well established. However, the combined effects of multi-metal in real-world scenario on liver dysfunction are still unclear. This cross-sectional study examined associations between 10 biomarkers of early liver injury and multiple heavy metals levels. The levels of heavy metals/metalloid (magnesium [Mg], calcium [Ca], iron [Fe], zinc [Zn], arsenic [As], Cd, copper [Cu], and Pb) were measured in blood and urinary sample collected from 725 participant

Arsenic is a naturally occurring metalloid that often is found in foods and drinking water. Human exposure to arsenic is associated with the development of gastrointestinal problems such as fluid loss, diarrhea and gastritis. Arsenic is also known to induce toxic responses including oxidative stress in cells of the gastrointestinal track. Tight junctions (TJs) regulate paracellular permeability and play a barrier role by inhibiting the movement of water, solutes and microorganisms in the paracellular space. Since oxidative stress and TJ damage are known to be associated, we examined whether ar

Contamination of soil and water by arsenic is a global problem. In Australia, the dipping of cattle in arsenic-containing solution to control cattle ticks in last centenary has left many sites heavily contaminated with arsenic and other toxicants. We had previously isolated five soil bacterial strains (CDB1-5) highly resistant to arsenic. To understand the resistance mechanism, molecular studies have been carried out. Two chromosome-encoded arsenic resistance (ars) gene clusters have been cloned from CDB3 (Bacillus sp.). They both function in Escherichia coli and cluster 1 exerts a much higher

Arsenic is a well-known environmental toxic metalloid element and carcinogen that affects multiple organ systems including tissue lipid peroxidation and reproduction. The present study was aimed to investigate the protective role of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on arsenic-induced testicular oxidative damage and antioxidant and steroidogeneic enzymes and sperm parameters in mice. Arsenic was administered through drinking water to mice at a concentration of 4.0 ppm sodium arsenite (actual concentration 2.3 ppm arsenic) for 35 days. The body weight of treated mice did not show significant change as com

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau features elevated geogenic arsenic (As) and intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Under these conditions, UV radiation accelerates microplastic aging and the release of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM), posing a realistic co-exposure scenario for Tibetan hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum). While microplastic particle toxicity is well documented, the ecological impacts of MP-DOM, especially from UV-aged plastics, remain poorly understood. Here, using a hydroponic system (50 - μM As(V), 5 mgg C/L MP-DOM), we investigated the effects of pr

Arsenic, a toxic environmental metalloid, induces liver damage by activating oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. This study examined the potential ameliorative effects of obeticholic acid (OCA) and methyl ferulic acid (MFA) against arsenic trioxide (ATO)-induced hepatic injury in rats, focusing on the pro-fibrotic TGF-β/Smad3 and pro-inflammatory MAPK pathways. Male Wistar rats received ATO orally at 7.5 mg/kg/day from day 7 to day 21. Concurrently, OCA and MFA were received orally for 21 days, either alone or in combination, at doses of 10 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. The current f

Arsenic (As) contamination in riverine sediments within global gold mining regions poses persistent ecological risks due to its easy release into the overlying water especially under anaerobic conditions. To ensure long-term stability of As in the sediment, we developed a composite material consisting of ferrous iron, schwertmannite, and calcium carbonate (FSC) for synergistic As sequestration. It was found that FSC exhibited high adsorption capacities of 107.3 mg/g for As(III) and 116.6 mg/g for As(V). Applying FSC at 3% in the contaminated sediment with total As of 317-4200 mg/kg drastically

OBJECTIVE: Metal and metalloid exposures (hereafter "metals") are associated with adverse health outcomes, including type 2 diabetes; however, previous studies were largely cross-sectional or underpowered. Furthermore, underserved racial and ethnic groups are underrepresented in environmental health research despite having higher rates of type 2 diabetes and a greater risk of metal exposures. Consequently, we evaluated continuous glycemic traits in relation to baseline urinary toxic metal, essential metal, and metal mixtures in a cohort of Mexican American adults.
