Prevention of developmental abnormalities with particular emphasis of primary prevention.

The Hungarian total (birth + fetal) prevalences of different developmental abnormalities offer a possibility to estimate the proportion of preventable development abnormalities. The effectiveness of primary, secondary and tertiary preventive methods are evaluated with a particular emphasis of primary prevention based on periconceptional folic acid or folic acid-containing multivitamin supplementation. The total prevalence of informative offspring with developmental abnormalities is 66.83 per 1,000 in Hungary and within this major DAs have 27.01 per 1,000 rate. The latter can be reduced by 26.6

Transgenerational and Intergenerational Maternal Age Effects Exhibit Complex, Genotype-Specific Patterns of Inheritance.

AbstractMaternal age effects, in which offspring phenotype is determined by a mother's age at the time of birth, are common and variable among diverse taxa, but relatively little is known about their dynamics across multiple generations. Characterizing patterns of inter- and transgenerational inheritance of maternal age can provide insight into potential molecular and evolutionary mechanisms. In two strains of the rotifer Brachionus manjavacas, we maintained young and old maternal age lineages and tested whether maternal age effects on lifespan and reproduction changed in magnitude or directio

[On the transplacental induction of tumours by N-ethyl--N-nitrosourea in different species (author's transl)].

The transplacental activity of N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) was tested in rats, rabbits, Syrian golden hamsters, Dzungarian dwarf hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs, and rhesus monkeys. In the offspring of rats, multiple tumours of the central and peripheral nervous system were found in 100 per cent, whereas in rabbits kidney tumours developed. In Syrian golden hamsters, the application led mostly to neoplasms of the thyroid gland. Dzungarian dwarf hamsters and monkeys prooved to be resistant. 9 out of 15 dogs died shortly after birth. In two dogs a carcinoma of the thyreoid gland and one of an ovary

Impact of eating disorders on obstetric outcomes in a large clinical sample: A comparison with the HUNT study.

OBJECTIVE: Current evidence from clinical studies suggests that having an active eating disorder (ED) during pregnancy is associated with unfavorable obstetric outcomes. However, the role of a lifetime diagnosis of ED is not fully understood. Variations in findings suggest a need for additional studies of maternal ED. This study aims to identify associations between a lifetime ED and obstetric outcomes. METHOD: Data from a hospital patient register and a population-based study (The HUNT Study) were linked to the Medical Birth Registry in Norway. Register based information of obstetric complic

Surfactant protein D modulates levels of IL-10 and TNF-α in intrauterine compartments during lipopolysaccharide-induced preterm birth.

Prematurity is the main cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity, and preterm birth is often associated with intrauterine inflammation. Surfactant protein D (SP-D) functions in lung homeostasis and has multiple roles in innate immunity. It is present in amniotic fluid and in gestational tissues. We propose that SP-D may regulate intrauterine inflammatory responses related to preterm labor. Our aim was to investigate the role of SP-D in lipopolysaccharide-induced preterm birth in mice that overexpress rat SP-D (rSP-D) under the human SP-C promoter. SP-D protein in amniotic fluid and in gestat

The impact of fetal sex and maternal parity on birth weight, placental mass, and placental efficiency: a retrospective analysis from a Polish tertiary center.

OBJECTIVES: Fetal and placental growth are influenced by multiple maternal and fetal factors, including fetal sex and maternal parity. Accurate knowledge of these determinants is essential for growth monitoring and perinatal risk assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of fetal sex and maternal parity on birth weight, placental weight, and the fetal-to-placental weight ratio in a large single-center cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 4,642 singleton live births between 28 and 40 weeks of gestation at a tertiary hospital in the Wielkopolska

Hair glucocorticoids during pregnancy in the context of trauma exposure and their predictive value for the development of childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) is gaining attention as a mental disorder with negative sequela for mothers and their offspring. Maternal trauma history is a well-known vulnerability factor for CB-PTSD symptoms (CB-PTSS). Furthermore, alterations of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis have been linked to both trauma exposure and PTSD development. Hence, we investigated whether trauma history was associated with long-term glucocorticoid (GC) levels during pregnancy and their predictive role for CB-PTSS. Further, we examined whether GCs act as a mediato

Can birth weight predict offspring's lung function in adult age? Evidence from two Swedish birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Associations between birth weight (BW) and adult lung function have been inconsistent and limited to early adulthood. We aimed to study this association in two population-based cohorts and explore if BW, adjusted for gestational age, predicts adult lung function. We also tested adult lung function impairment according to the mis-match hypothesis-small babies growing big as adults. METHODS: We included 3495 individuals (aged 46.4 ± 5.4 years) from the Malmo Preventive Project (MPP), Sweden, born between 1921 and 1949, and 1401 young to middle-aged individuals (aged 28.6 ± 6.7 years

The Associated Factors of Low Birthweight Among Term Singletons in Japan: A Pregnancy Birth Registry Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Progress in reducing the global low birthweight (LBW) has been insufficient. Although the focus has been on preventing preterm birth, evidence regarding LBW in term births is limited. Despite its low preterm birth prevalence, Japan has a higher LBW proportion than other developed countries. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of LBW in term singleton births and its associated factors using a national database. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of neonates registered in the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology Successive Pregnancy Birth Registry System who

The Impact of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors on Fatherhood in Patients With Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: A Mixed-Method Study.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple studies have demonstrated that tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) exert a significant extent of control over chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), as evidenced by studies such as the population-based Swedish CML registry, which found that patients reaching age 70 had a relative survival rate close to one when compared to the general population. Consequently, new perspectives on the safety of treatments have emerged, particularly in the context of their impact on fatherhood in men. According to the authors, this is the first study to examine the effect of TKIs on fatherhood in C

Effect of life skills building education and micronutrient supplements provided from preconception versus the standard of care on low birth weight births among adolescent and young Pakistani women (15-24 years): a prospective, population-based cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors known to impact maternal and newborn nutrition and health can exist from adolescence. If an undernourished adolescent girl becomes pregnant, her own health and pregnancy are at an increased risk for adverse outcomes. Offering preconception care from adolescence could provide an opportunity for health and nutrition promotion to improve one's own well-being, as well as future pregnancy outcomes and the health of the next generation. METHODS: The Matiari emPowerment and Preconception Supplementation (MaPPS) Trial is a population-based two-arm, cluster-randomized, control

Maternal folic acid supplementation and dietary folate intake and congenital heart defects.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that folic acid supplementation before and/or during pregnancy could reduce the risk of congenital heart defects (CHDs). However, the results from limited epidemiologic studies have been inconclusive. We investigated the associations between maternal folic acid supplementation, dietary folate intake, and the risk of CHDs. METHODS: A birth cohort study was conducted in 2010-2012 at the Gansu Provincial Maternity & Child Care Hospital in Lanzhou, China. After exclusion of stillbirths and multiple births, a total of 94 births were identified with congenital heart

Preterm delivery is associated with an increased risk of epithelial ovarian cancer among parous women.

Epithelial ovarian cancer is a fatal disease of largely unknown etiology. Higher parity is associated with reduced risk of ovarian cancer. However, among parous women, the impact of pregnancy-related factors on risk is not well understood. This population-based case-control study included all parous women with epithelial ovarian cancer in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden during 1967-2013 (n = 10,957) and up to 10 matched controls (n = 107,864). We used conditional logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for pregnancy-related factors and ovarian

Prenatal Exposure to Nitrate from Drinking Water and Markers of Fetal Growth Restriction: A Population-Based Study of Nearly One Million Danish-Born Children.

BACKGROUND: High levels of nitrate (NO3-) in drinking water cause methemoglobinemia in infants; however, few studies have examined the potential effects of low-level exposure on fetal growth, and the results have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the association between maternal exposure to nitrate in drinking water during pregnancy and offspring size at birth in a nationwide study of full-term (≥37 wk gestation) live-born singletons. METHODS: We estimated maternal nitrate exposure for 898,206 births in Denmark during 1991-2011 by linkage of individual home address(es) with
